#What is the point of the "Restart Cinnamon when it uses too much memory" feature

put it back down to 2 GB. It's there in case one of the free "applets" or "desklets" has a memory leak and things run out of control, then Cinn will just refresh (not log out). Cinnamon is just the desktop environment. No DE should EVER need to hog even more than 1.5 GB of RAM. the rest of the RAM you have is for your programs to run, multiple open windows, etc.
Linux Mint is an elegant, easy to use, up to date and comfortable desktop operating system.
Imagine it as an overflow valve, so your bathroom doesn't completely flood in case of a leak. No sense in putting that valve near the ceiling.
It just keeps the DE from using too much RAM
Mint 18 or 19 Cinnamon had some memory leaks. I never noticed until I switched to a much newer kernel
It is here for the case that some applet, desklet, extension or even cinnamon itself has a memory leak.
A memory leak would fill up your memory.
