#How to install a Vietnamese IME on Mint?
75 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
go in Settings, type input in the search field
okay so
i already installed the fcitx thingy...
but i'm still trying to figure something out. namely, i can't seem to find the application on the system tray
it should appear in the bottom right corner, shouldn't it?
if u mean keyboard layout that is different
u have to choose vietnamese keyboard in keyboard settings, and show flag in tray
shouldn't i ideally have both the input method and the layout set to vietnamese 🤔
yes
so when i open this thingy nothing happens
well task manager says it running on the background
where the system tray again
the notification area near the clock
the bell is for notifications
oic
i'm not sure about other input methods but check the main chat later n ask
yea i already managed to install the vietnamese kb layout
currently tryna set up the IME

bump
I found an askubuntu post but Idk much about this stuff
I am not familiar with Asian input schemes, but at least this fcitx package seems to be right, since Vietnamese is listed among the supported languages here (1.1.3): https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Fcitx

sorry guys for any inconvenience i caused
If I apt search fcitx | grep Vietnam, I get fcitx5-unikey, so this should be your package.
is there any way that i can lock this thread?
You can mark it solved, and no worries.
i still have some questions though
is there a way i can set a hotkey to quickly switch between my viet input method and my secondary one?
it's cumbersome to type english letters with a vietnamese keyboard
You should look in Keyboard options, hotkeys can be set there. Not sure if that is pre-selectable, but you should also be able to bind some command or script to a key, and figure out the command to put in there.
Or perhaps use a Hot Corner, these can hold commands.
im somewhat tech illiterate, i'm not sure if i'd know how to do that sorry
currently fiddling with on the keyboard settings so i can figure smth out
any idea how to set up the "next input method" thingy here?
i want to be able to switch input methods using shift+alt
If you have come this far, you are not tech illiterate. That thing is probably what you need, just click on the three-dots button and you should be able to set your desired key combination. Other than that, I found this here: https://superuser.com/questions/935165/how-can-i-change-my-fcitx-input-method-from-the-terminal
i've no idea how this works, so i'm just trying this out
well that didnt work
also that's ibus, not fcitx
i gave up trying to get fcitx to work and had to switch to ibus instead
If I understand that correctly, "next input method" just toggles through the ones you have, so if you have two of them, this will make it switch back and forth. But do not just use Alt+Shift, this collides with a lot of other combinations. Perhaps Alt+Shift+L (for language)?
i mean, part of the reason why i installed linux mint as my main OS is because i want to increase my own computer literacy :p
i'm just a normie windows user lmao
something like this, you say?
Sure, and you are welcome. Just keep in mind that even I, after nearly twenty years of tech support, mostly google your question and try to make sense of the results.
Yes, that looks good. If it does not work, try it after a reboot. Sometimes even Linux needs that.
well that didnt do anything and im not sure what id do to debug it
oh ok, i'll reboot it
see you in a while
You need to make sure you have both input methods set in the next tab over.
already done it
wait, who marked this as solved?
i say this because the hotkey for switching between imes still isnt working
I remembered one more thing. You can get an input method switcher in the taskbar, just like Windows has. Probably a plug-in, although I never used it. This has the advantage of allowing you to click to switch, and also show what is currently selected.
And I did not mark this solved.
well i already got the input method switcher on my task bar
but i think it'd be easier if i just had a hotkey
i say this because in my own experience, keyboard shortcuts are faster than moving your mouse cursor from one side of the screen to the other clicking buttons
Sure. It should be possible, but if it does not work that way, I am pretty much out of ideas.
let's try this
well that worked
my changes went into effect after i right clicked the ibus icon on the bottom right of the task bar and clicked "restart"
now i'll mark this as solved. thx m8
Glad it works
it was mostly experimentation
