go in Settings, type input in the search field

thick lake
#

okay so

#

i already installed the fcitx thingy...

#

but i'm still trying to figure something out. namely, i can't seem to find the application on the system tray

#

it should appear in the bottom right corner, shouldn't it?

sick ferry
#

if u mean keyboard layout that is different

#

u have to choose vietnamese keyboard in keyboard settings, and show flag in tray

thick lake
#

shouldn't i ideally have both the input method and the layout set to vietnamese 🤔

sick ferry
#

yes

thick lake
#

so when i open this thingy nothing happens

#

well task manager says it running on the background

#

where the system tray again

I found an askubuntu post but Idk much about this stuff

I am not familiar with Asian input schemes, but at least this fcitx package seems to be right, since Vietnamese is listed among the supported languages here (1.1.3): https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Fcitx

thick lake
#

i THINK I got it to work?

#

let's test it

"tôi nói tiếng việt"

#

welp ig i figured it out by myself

thick lake
#

sorry guys for any inconvenience i caused

dusky brook

If I apt search fcitx | grep Vietnam, I get fcitx5-unikey, so this should be your package.

thick lake
#

is there any way that i can lock this thread?

dusky brook
#

You can mark it solved, and no worries.

thick lake
#

i still have some questions though

#

is there a way i can set a hotkey to quickly switch between my viet input method and my secondary one?

#

it's cumbersome to type english letters with a vietnamese keyboard

dusky brook
#

You should look in Keyboard options, hotkeys can be set there. Not sure if that is pre-selectable, but you should also be able to bind some command or script to a key, and figure out the command to put in there.

#

Or perhaps use a Hot Corner, these can hold commands.

thick lake
#

im somewhat tech illiterate, i'm not sure if i'd know how to do that sorry

#

currently fiddling with on the keyboard settings so i can figure smth out

#

any idea how to set up the "next input method" thingy here?

#

i want to be able to switch input methods using shift+alt

dusky brook
thick lake
#

i've no idea how this works, so i'm just trying this out

#

well that didnt work

#

also that's ibus, not fcitx

#

i gave up trying to get fcitx to work and had to switch to ibus instead

dusky brook
#

If I understand that correctly, "next input method" just toggles through the ones you have, so if you have two of them, this will make it switch back and forth. But do not just use Alt+Shift, this collides with a lot of other combinations. Perhaps Alt+Shift+L (for language)?

#

Sure, and you are welcome. Just keep in mind that even I, after nearly twenty years of tech support, mostly google your question and try to make sense of the results.

#

Yes, that looks good. If it does not work, try it after a reboot. Sometimes even Linux needs that.

thick lake
thick lake
#

see you in a while

dusky brook
#

You need to make sure you have both input methods set in the next tab over.

thick lake
#

already done it

#

wait, who marked this as solved?

#

i say this because the hotkey for switching between imes still isnt working

dusky brook
#

I remembered one more thing. You can get an input method switcher in the taskbar, just like Windows has. Probably a plug-in, although I never used it. This has the advantage of allowing you to click to switch, and also show what is currently selected.
And I did not mark this solved.

thick lake
#

well i already got the input method switcher on my task bar

#

but i think it'd be easier if i just had a hotkey

#

i say this because in my own experience, keyboard shortcuts are faster than moving your mouse cursor from one side of the screen to the other clicking buttons

dusky brook
#

Sure. It should be possible, but if it does not work that way, I am pretty much out of ideas.

thick lake
#

let's try this

#

well that worked

#

my changes went into effect after i right clicked the ibus icon on the bottom right of the task bar and clicked "restart"

#

now i'll mark this as solved. thx m8

dusky brook
#

Glad it works

thick lake
#

it was mostly experimentation
