So i have a NVMe M.2 SSD which i got for free, but it's 256 Gb as my current SSD . I have an Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3( 1650 ti and ryzen 5 4600H i think ) . I want to install it in it's HDD socket , by buying and adaptor or something as 2.5 ssd's for example are mostly an empty box . My problem is that i dont know which adaptor i should buy, as I dont want to break the ssd , or buy a support that i cant return and spend money on it for nothing . Also i need it to be internal . I want it 1st for storage expansion and 2nd for dual booting . One ssd for linux ( i want to switch to linux ) and one for windows until i can 100% rely on linux and find alternatives to some windows apps that i like .

The 1st photo is the SSD i want to add. The 2nd one is the HDD that i already have ( i want to get rid of it it moves so slowly i have to wait a few seconds to load a folder also didnt undscrew because i would have to remove the heatsink and battery )
If i could provide any other informations just tell me and ill answer .

Nvme and SATA are two different protocols. so a simple adapter that way won't work. Your best bet is get a PCIe card that mounts an m.2 nvme device.

violet yoke
#

and where to put that pcie

glad scarab
#

PCIe to nvme card. Also you can leave your old hard drive in that way and use it for whatever storage.

glad scarab
violet yoke
#

i didnt know about different protocols not that smart , thought they were like usb , u know , usb a , micro usb , usb c

#

stuff like that

glad scarab
#

nope

violet yoke
# glad scarab in a free slot

i dont have a free slot . my laptop only has its internal ssd which it came with and it occupied and one free hdd place .

glad scarab
#

look at your motherboard.. google pcie for pics and identify any available slots you have.. (short slots all u need ie -x1)

violet yoke
#

ill look it up

#

maybe maybe there is slot i didnt see

glad scarab
#

oh in a laptop u may not have

violet yoke
#

yeah exactly

#

is it possible tho to at least have it external

glad scarab
#

you can probably buy a SATA 2.5" SSD for the same price as an adapter PCIe board nowadays 😛

violet yoke
#

its a shame i had that ssd im talking about and wanted to put it to good use

#

as i was excited for it . thanks tho

glad scarab
#

it is possible tho

violet yoke
#

ok, well ill keep it maybe one day ill have a use for it . thanks a lot

#

ill hold onto some money and buy the 2.5 sata ssd

#

im a student and have no income

glad scarab
#

best bet right there.. shop around n see the prices. a decent 256 one should be around 30 bucks maybe 40

glad scarab
#

a usb enclosure is around 10 bucks

violet yoke
#

but yeah ill see around. thanks a lot i appreciate the help

glad scarab
#

you're welcome

NVMe is meant to be connected to a board that has NVMe ports

#

If your board lacks NVMe then you can't install it

trim trellis
dark nova
trim trellis
#

Unless there are no speed drawbacks

violet yoke
# trim trellis Check if your board has NVMe support

yeah i checked its a laptop didnt expect more than one . i didnt even care if the speed got halfed , i just wanted extra storage for almost free , but ill buy a 512 gb 2.5 ssd and install it then get linux on that one

trim trellis
#

so I can use both kind of drives

#

so, I use double SSD KEKW

violet yoke
#

thanks a lot

trim trellis
#

this helped me verify my stuff before buying a NVMe drive

#

it will tell you what speeds, clocks and version your board has, to you buy a matching drive

trim trellis
violet yoke
#

i wanted a second drive bfore installing linux mint

#

as i have some apps that i still use , and some other stuff

trim trellis
violet yoke
#

and want the 2nd ssd to put linux on

#

i will rn 2 sec

trim trellis
violet yoke
#

do i need to buy or smth

trim trellis
#

for example

violet yoke
#

i have a 30 day trial

trim trellis
#

just to check info

violet yoke
#

ok , i opened the same thing . soo what am i searching for ? ports u said

trim trellis
#

also the motherboard section

#

I can't open that part here because it hangs as I ran it under wine

trim trellis
#

ok

#

go to chipset

#

it tells what memory types supports

#

lemme send you the full aida

#

as some values are hidden

#

just extract and run the portable

#

now with the trial one, iirc

#

try on logical drives

#

use the extreme one

#

on logical drives

#

it's on storage

#

also the motherboard section gives more info about the board

#

the ATA part also helps

#

on the top select the UMS

#

there

#

it shows info about it

#

there you can check what kind of drive you have

#

then try the smart and physical drives section

#

I know that between the storage and motherboard sections of aida you will get the info you are looking for to check your system

#

so try looking all the sections under storage and motherboard

#

iirc it also can tell what max RAM capacity your mobo supports

#

iirc spd and chipset will give a lot of info

#

that will be also useful if you ever buy new ram

#

there

#

on SSD physical info you got what you were looking for

#

it says form factor and such

#

it uses PCI-E 3.0 x4

#

save that info

#

you can screenshot it

#

but so far, the NVMe drive seems to work under windowz

#

now what you want to do? sorry I was afk

#

but which OS you want to use

#

which drive will hold mint?

#

check ASPI

#

undder storage

#

what the BIOS value says?

#

go to computer section

#

iirc it has more info related

#

try dmi

#

motherboard

#

keep playing with those until you get useful info

#

I mean, uder the section you were before

#

like, check all the parts of it until you find info related to what your mobo supports

#

on DMI

#

see? it shows a lotta info

#

another useful section of aida is the hardware section

#

seeems like they removed it

#

it was there on older versions

#

it used to exist under software section

#

nice, you found something really useful

#

mine reports 64 gigs ram max

#

lemme do a quick research

#

well, the web says that you could try using HWiNFO to check

#

also, on aida, the ata section helps

#

also, they say to check your OEM website about

#

for example, mine is an acer laptop so I went to acer website and look for my laptop specs

#

I will test HWiNFO under arch

#

sigh, they give poorly info about

#

I mean your OEM website

#

not your fault

#

that's why aida64 and HWiNFO are way more useful

#

does your OEM website offer a users guide or manual?

#

for example, desktops PC have a manual about the motherboard which contains a lotta info about the board

#

send me your laptop model

#

so I can search about what kind of SATA it supports

#

HWiNFO seems to be way worse than aida64

#

just tested it, idk if it's because wine

#

I will boot into a windowzPE to use aida here to find where it has info about sata

#

because it doesn't run well under wine

#

brb for a moment, for the sake of help you

#

it's just that I'm so used to arch that I forgot where it is under aida KEKW

trim trellis
#

@violet yoke found the solution

#

sorry for making you wait, but you need HWiNFO to check

violet yoke
#

No problem

trim trellis
#

here's how it looks on my system

violet yoke
#

thank you so much for your time and help

trim trellis
#

in my case, it says ata 6G

#

which means SATA-3

#

if it has a lower value, then it's definitively SATA-2

trim trellis
violet yoke
#

bassically its sata 2 for me .

trim trellis
#

yup, it's sata 2

violet yoke
#

goshh i hate laptop manufactures going as cheap as possible .

trim trellis
violet yoke
#

i think im just gonna switch completly to linux , f windows , and ill manage from there

#

i have like 2-3 apps that i need and dont have direct support for linux but ill use wine or find alternatives

trim trellis
# violet yoke

sata 3G there, and on the bottom it says SATA 2.6, so it's sata2

#

mine is sata 6G so sata3

#

though nvme is way faster

#

so buying a sata 3 drive would be a waste of money

violet yoke
#

yeah yeah , sata 2 . im not gonna bother spending money and upgrading sata 2 is too old , 300mb/s when im used to 2200 mb/s is criminal

#

yeah , thank you so much for helping me

trim trellis
violet yoke
#

yeah im gonna keep it for files i dont really use

trim trellis
#

like, my main drive is a NVMe SSD, but my SATA3 SSD is my storage drive

violet yoke
#

got it. thanks. i think i can work with 256 gb for main stuf i need fast and 500 for stuff i rarely use

trim trellis
#

256 wasn't enough for my needs in the long run

violet yoke
#

💀 if only i had the money , im a college student who lives with food i get from home and instant soups

trim trellis
#

regarding the old HDDs, I bought usb cases and made em external storage

violet yoke
#

i know im limiting myself on the storage side but i have to adapt

trim trellis
#

now I have enough storage space

#

in total iirc I have like 7 drives

#

5 HDDs and 2 SSDs

violet yoke
#

😭 be proud of yourself , unfortunately i like to buy nice things every weekend like some coffee or snack or some other stuff .

violet yoke
#

i want to be done with mmy exams ( i think im gonna be mentally done before physically with the last exam ) and then want to search for a part time job

trim trellis
#

if it still works, why not give it a 2nd life as usb HDD?

violet yoke
trim trellis
#

now, since you know what type of SATA you have, also check what kind of NVMe you have

#

use HWiNFO again

violet yoke
#

i will

trim trellis
#

but go the the nvme drive this time

violet yoke
#

:333 too much procrastination on my part ive been trying to study but at all classes i got stuck at some point and imm toooo lazy to put more effort like searching in books 🙂

trim trellis
#

better check everything about your drives

#

so you know what to buy or what to do with your drives

violet yoke
#

i will . still gonna be on this server :)) for now i think im just gonna leave everything as it is , exceppt maybe tonight im gonna clean install linux , and configure it and maybe learn some basic commands and stuff like that

#

im so done with windows its so f bad

violet yoke
#

and all the ai bloatware in the upcoming win 12 just did it for me

trim trellis
#

just learn basic stuff

#

then use mint GUI apps

#

but what you do really need to do is to have a ventoy usb

violet yoke
#

and also the constant screen every 2 weeks of , HEY UPGRADE TO OFFICE 365 , but like i already have a family plan with office 365 , mostly for the 1Tb storage

#

ventoy ?

trim trellis
#

I used my ventoy usb with hiren's boot PE tool to get that info

#

ventoy makes bootable usb's with isos

trim trellis
# violet yoke ventoy ?

you can boot system mantainance tools like hiren's boot PE, linux distros or even install windowz

#

it's an all in one tool

#

that's how I was able to get the info without needing windowz

#

btw, you can still dual boot on the same drive, but you will need a 500 gigs to 1TB drive for that

#

from here, up to you what you can do. I think I did my best, also learned more about this laptop

violet yoke
#

thank you so much for your help saving me 50 bucks or so

#

and i learned some new stuff

trim trellis
#

now decide where to install mint and windowz

#

or what kind of storage setup to do

#

you will need to make a ventoy usb for this

trim trellis
violet yoke
trim trellis
#

if you can, get an usb 3.x flash drive

violet yoke
trim trellis
#

I do own an usb 3.x flash drive and got a lotta isos on it

trim trellis
#

usb 3 is what you should own for flash drives

violet yoke
#

i think its 3 ? it didnt say on the package

trim trellis
#

why? way faster either for when you need to do mantainance or want to install a system or live boot

trim trellis
violet yoke
#

maybe i didnt see then

trim trellis
#

if it doesn't , very sus device, probably scammed

violet yoke
#

its from an official distributor

#

dw its not a scam

trim trellis
#

anyways, double check also what kind of usb ports your laptop has

#

mine has 2 usb 2.0 and 1 usb 3.x

violet yoke
#

one 3.x and one 2.x

trim trellis
#

faster transfers

#

and meanwhile, make the ventoy usb

violet yoke
#

yeah the usb stick i have is 3.2

trim trellis
#

you need linux mint and hiren's boot PE isos

violet yoke
#

so many woooords 😭😭 getting overwhelmed

#

not ur fault

violet yoke
trim trellis
trim trellis
#

just plug your usb, and get ventoy

violet yoke
# trim trellis just plug your usb, and get ventoy

ok i got ventoy , i figured out how to put iso files in it , where do i get those iso files . because i see a supported list in iso tested on their page but there is no download or link to any of those

trim trellis
#

use qbittorrent to get it

violet yoke
#

thanks a lot
