#1Gbit cable showed up as 10 Mb/s, after tinkering it shows 100 Mb/s

Is the nic on the computer a 10/100? You can check using the System Report applet in the menu. It's listed in the information tab, I think.
Aternatively: inxi -Nnxxx will get you The NIC info. Then put what follows 'IF:' after ethtool. It should look like ethtool enp34s0 or ethtool eth0 That will show you what the NIC is capable of.
