I have 2 monitors and i set up 2 panels with different purpose in mind but whenever i open a window on any monitor it would appear on both panels and just clutter everything on both panels and i dont know which window is from which screen, what am i missing?

haughty badge
#

yes

honest venture
#

sounds like your display settings need adjusted

#

may be set to mirror when they need to be set to separate displays

#

oh wait sorry

#

im confused

haughty badge
#

its set on join displays

honest venture
#

ok, just your panels are both showing the current running apps?

haughty badge
#

both panels show all open windows on any screen

honest venture
#

: / hmm...

#

wish i had an answer for this... ive never tried 2 panels with dual monitors

#

i just use 1 panel on one screen for both

#

I know there are desktop environments that behave the way you like. Basically, you need two different desktops, one for each monitor, and you need to adjust settings so that openened apps appear in only one desktop

honest venture
#

i wonder if kde does it

haughty badge
#

am i in the wrong here for expecting it to work like this, like, is this the normal, the norm

honest venture
#

well its normal in linux to want things the way you want them...

#

i just dont know how to do quite that configuration on cinnamon

#

i dont know if the panel and widgets are capable

haughty badge
#

i just expect for the windows to move from panel to panel when i drag and rop them onto another screen

#

and everything inbetween

honest venture
#

ill have to try it in vm

strange raptor
#

I'm not on mint or cinnamon right now, but I'll have to take a look, I know it is possible in some DEs, so it may be possible in cinnamon as well

honest venture
#

@haughty badge KDE can do it, i just did it with my dual screen KDE setup

#

you can set each panel so it only shows windows from current desktop, or from only the current screen 🙂

strange raptor
#

"show windows from all workspaces"

#

and make sure you are using different workspaces for both of your monitors

#

Right click on the taskbar window list, > applet preferences > configure > "show windows from all workspaces"

#

You can also add the "workspace switcher" applet to your task bar

#

You may also want to google "linux mint cinnamon how to use different workspaces for different monitors"

haughty badge
#

show windows from all workspaces didnt work, still shows it all on all panels

strange raptor
#

I told you to use different workspaces for different monitors

haughty badge
#

i think i may need to learn that workspace thing then

strange raptor
#

are you using different workspaces? I do not think so

haughty badge
#

its all on the first workspace

strange raptor
#

Add the workspace switcher applet to your panel

#

right click on the panel > applets > search for workspace switcher > click on +

haughty badge
#

it only has two options

strange raptor
#

What has two options?

haughty badge
#

these two options

strange raptor
#

close that window, click on the "+" button after you highlight workspace switcher

#

"+" means add to panel

haughty badge
#

its added, you can tell fromt he numbers down low

strange raptor
#

Could you undo that thing you did to have different panels on both monitors?

haughty badge
#

do i have to limit to 2 workspaces and make each workspace for each monitor

strange raptor
#

You can use as many workspaces are you want

#

but in your case, at least two, one for each monitor

#

But try it, switch to another workspace by clicking on one of the workspace numbers, and you'll see that the opened windows won't be the same

haughty badge
#

im not used to this so i dont know how to proceed next, i need to google it

strange raptor
#

IF you disabled "show windows from all workspaces"

#

click on one of the numbers on the panel

haughty badge
#

but yes the windows go away when i switch

strange raptor
#

Cool, that's what you want

#

Now you just need to use different workspaces for both of your monitors

#

But I'm concerned because the second monitor does not have the same panel

haughty badge
#

what do you mean by that

strange raptor
#

What part did you not understand?

#

Or maybe there is something I did not understand 🤔

haughty badge
#

why are you concerned

strange raptor
#

You said this in your first post:

I have 2 monitors and i set up 2 panels with different purpose in mind

I have no idea what you did to be honest, but this seems like an attempt at solving your problem that did not actually solve your problem. So I think you should return it to how it was before, and instead use different workspaces.

strange raptor
#

Because right now, the second monitor does not have the "workspace switcher" applet

haughty badge
#

i guess i have to add it on it as well

strange raptor
#

You should try to undo what you did

haughty badge
#

but im weighing the pros and cons of complex workplaces/monitors or just scrap all and go kde

strange raptor
#

that's my recommendation, but you can do whatever you like

haughty badge
#

thats the curse of linux

strange raptor
#

It's exactly the same mechanic

#

You should try to understand it first before switching to something else only because it "just works" but without understanding it nonetheless

haughty badge
# honest venture

yes but this screenshot at least shows it has the option to show only tasks from current screen

strange raptor
haughty badge
#

i hope i figure this otherwise simple intuitive window/panel mystery out

haughty badge
strange raptor
#

Well yeah, but I told you how to fix your issue

#

You just have to figure out how to do it but you know what to do

haughty badge
#

yes, gotta figure this workspace thing how to fit it in my idea of a desktop

#

its a start

strange raptor
#
  • use different workspaces
  • Use workspace one for monitor one, use workspace two for monitor two
  • Make sure you disable "show windows from all workspaces"
  • Add the "workspace switcher" applet to your panel
haughty badge
#

somewhat on it, this feels like a gazillion potential screens in one

haughty badge
#

i managed to find a solution

#

i "minused" the applets window list and grouped window list, installed CobiWindowList

#

now it all works and has much better options

strange raptor
#

Why were you not satisfied with my solution?

haughty badge
#

i couldnt find a way to bind my screen to a workplace and the DE change was a bit drastic so i turned to the two things doing me wrong and tried to find a unified better applet for the same job

#

now it all works as i wanted it to work

strange raptor
#

It seems like such a logical workflow, I have no idea why it is not supported

#

I'm sorry for sending you on a wild goose chase

#

It might be one of the limitations of the x-window system

honest venture
haughty badge
haughty badge
#

its just about the window list applet being just not quite up to the task

honest venture
#

nice

haughty badge
#

"only show windows on the same monitor" was the option i needed, i noticed some wonky behavior from the panel itsel as if keeps hiding system tray buttons if there are more than 4 or 5, in a short span it shows a circle icon as if it groups it up and dissapears, same kind of behavior from moving windows from one screen to another, the window dissapears but after double enabling cobiwindowlist on both panels and then right clicking on open windows->configure you can truly configure them right for the right panel, the panel switcher on panel settings doesnt seem to quite work as intended

#

so much for my experience setting something as simple as open windows and panels
