I'm just having trouble with the word choice here and knowing exactly what author meant here.

Why does he say the sum is "hard to interpret, certainly as having pointwise values"?

Also, when we says "reasonably interpreted, it is still okay to integrate against this sum" , does he just mean it's common knowledge that it's okay to integrate any sum of complex exps?
