Though, better to avoid square roots in these cases.

Yeah, that's kinda why square rooting isn't a particularly good idea.

In previous examples we were shown (I think) we can get a cos from a sin by using (sin^2)+(cos^2)=1 and square rooting. Idk if we were shown this in the parametric equations chapter TBF. I used it before and it worked

Is it best to avoid doing that and square rooting in general in these types of questions due to gaining extra solutions that DNE?
