Hello, I'm planing on becoming an AI engineer, for that I have to remind myself math well. I've loved math my whole life, even when I couldn't understand it. Then I started learning for exams and I could work for hours without getting tired and feeling the time pass. I even had emotional connection with it. Math was dear to me, then mentally everything hit me and I gave up on studies for some time. I know I have the ability to work and understand mathematics, I don't think I have a confidence problem, but the fact is I can't touch my math book and notebook, I've been overthink it whole day, is there a way you guys help yourselves when such thing happens? I think it's a universal experience I'm going through and with right mindset there's a way to handle it. Thank you in advance for your time and attention. < 3

Well, personally for me
maths reserves a purpose oin my life
it is exactly what drives me to keep doing it
its a partial blend of interest and importance
Yeah, I should just chill and slowly get back to being that workaholic beast.
I guess I just wanted to be heard.
Thanks a lot for taking time.
exactly, keep in mind the importance it holds for you
my pleasure ❤️
Yes.
skill issue?
shut. 😭
if you treat it like a skill issue it's easier to overcome mentally
like in video games
NO ITS NOT 💀
Well it has its truth in it.
I understood.
helps with the overthinking
i just want to earn money thats it 💀
Lol.
I recommend taking a week off
maybe 3 days
then going at it again but this time discuss what you learnt with other people. This exposes you to many different perspectives and also helps in keeping you accountable
we are social animals, things get better when others are involved sometimes
So I'm doing a right thing.
sometimes it's important to do something rather than the right thing
Well I don't want to take too much rest, so I'll just skip this evening and tomorrow start working calmly. Soon I'll get calculus down too I believe.
Right.
it's hard to move a muscle at times I get it
You do get it.
Are you studying math with the sole goal of ai engineering?
I mean I learn IT in uni, calculus 1 and 2 are coming. but generally yes AI.
I see
I want to remind myself trigonometry and stuff though. I mean at this point it's annoying, I want to confidently say I know math, so I'll remember school stuff too.
did you look into the "ai engineering" position much?
I think I did enough for now, what do you mean though?
trig and stuff aren't a big deal, people forget after not doing it for years
takes a day to revise
Well I have no work experience and no one around me to talk about AI with, so I'm just going to lend some beginner job and then I'll find out more about what I want to do exactly in AI.
I am more unemployed than you I can't help in this regard but what I can say is that you should have a somewhat clean road map for the math
You don't understand, I have 5% knowledge in trigonometry. It's not just for AI or uni at this point. It's my personal battle, making my "inner child" happy lol.
Yeah I understand that. I know which math I should learn.
trigonometry is no big deal, don't treat it as one this only makes it subconsciously harder
True, I need to chill.
always stay ballin (genuine advice)
about the discussing part
#math-discussion is open always
and #geonosidan-prison-complex most of the times when the right people are online
(it's not meant to be a math discussion channel)
I see.
Thanks.
For some reason I feel like I'll never forget this little conversation, it was special to me.
Really thanks a lot.
Not sure if you need my take on this, but are you at the end of your studies now?
I did my studies in data science and the part of math that is needed for it is rather selective in a sense
In AI and ML generally as I've heard liner algebra, I mean matrix and calculus are important.
Then python and deep learning.
yeah ok so those are things you'd typically see during the first two years of undergrad
if your problem is about those type of things in particular, then yeah it would be very helpful to get into it, as it would be absolutely necessary
but for example, I got away even with how terrible I am at general algebra
Really?
All that to say, select your priorities
Interesting.
yes, I suck at group theory
I'm no different from a newborn baby
note that this is only applicable because you're doing applied mathematics
if you were to study math generally, then I guess things would not be as lenient
Well I have no one around with the career or work experience, so I can't really ask what's the most important thing in AI engineering. I guess I'll have to just start where I planed and slowly understand it all better.
imo linalg, diff calc and topology in normed vector spaces are prerequisites
I have to understand what level of math is needed in those AI algorithms. I can only understand it with experience.
you should be learning optimization along the way
as in, it should be in the curriculum
I haven't even heard topology and after that stuff.
I'm learning IT in uni, but it's like informatics, light comp stuff.
I'm self learning everything else.
it also turns out that Coffey is currently trying to learn the prerequisites for ML as well
so he's also learning about those, linalg, diff calc and topology in nvs
Mhh didn't know that.
Maybe I can dm him about that later? I'm looking for fellow learners...
Dunno, are you up for that? @spare slate
I mean I guess he can share some of the resources with you if necessary, but I do not know you nor your level in mathematics currently
so it is difficult for me to give you targeted advice
you may be a newborn baby or very experienced and just in need of refreshers
We are both super unemployed as it seems, we have the same problem. If that doesn't bring people together, I don't know what does.
I see. I don't know exactly either, I'n used to being a noob, but I'm not that much of a noob. So somewhere in the middle.
Perhaps it would be helpful to detail a bit more what you're confident about and what you've left to learn
I mean learning ML in uni?
no, that's too large
the subfield in particular is neurosymbolic AI
basically a bunch of applied deep learning
I see.
About that. I'm learning calculus and trigonometry is all I have left in school math. I know liner Algebra pretty well I believe. And that's pretty much it.
I know some C++, and I'm going to start python tomorrow or a day after that.
That's all about me.
Well, how far are you from finishing your studies?
Like uni? Or what studies?
Not really, 3rd year starts this September. But I've passed one and a half semester worth of subjects.
I was focused on learning other things, it didn't work out.
As you can see...
Ok, so you might just wanna hit those prerequisites if your goal is to study ML in the future.
And at the moment, if your problem is purely related to motivation, there are a couple of things you wanna check
What's prerequisites?
linear algebra, topology, differential calculus
Okay.
the first thing you wanna check is if that is already part of the curriculum in the future
Share please.
or you are already supposed to know about it
If the former, then perhaps the urgency to learn the prerequisites is not so high at the moment
(though it would still be good to do so)
the second thing that you want to check is, how reliant your future courses would be on the mathematical prerequisites that you are trying to learn
not all ML courses are the same
mine were pretty oriented towards applied mathematics
some other places see it more as a computer science thing
or just learning good practices to deal with new technologies, idk
Nah in AI engineering math is definitely a thing.
I would say it's always good to learn about math. But if you are struggling to do it now, you might want to properly assess the urgency of learning at this current point in time
But some say you don't need to be as much nerd as some people make it seem which I agree with.
That's a good point.
So yeah that's my advice for you at the moment
Understandable. Thanks a lot.
for what
Ana needs to learn some mathematical prerequisites for ML
basically the same thing as you
mhm
They are asking if they can study with you
Ana is a female name.
@severe obsidian what does "studying together" entail here?
No pressure Coffey.
I don't know, I guess sharing advice, resources...
People helping each other.
It would be worth noting that if you have questions about mathematics, this server is always open to you
as long as you follow the rules
then you should, in this case study with the whole sever
I don't even know what I need help in, I'm just used to feeling the need of help. I'll chill and be fine.
That makes sense.
If you have questions about a specific math concept or problem, you can make a post in #1020426321261756536
And someone will come to help you, at some point
You're also welcome to ask for academic advice
Thank you guys a lot for all the advice.
apart from that
we could try to do the thing where you keep up with eachother and hold eachother accountable ftso more productivity
it has not worked out for me before, people loose interest in studying whatever we planned on
I had kind if the same experience, but we can try sure.
cool!
