Hi, I'm a freshman in Math, and very serious to get PhD.
I know it's too early, but I have to make a important decision soon, and I need help.
I'm able to minor my study(+24~30 credits) in CS, and since I'm a software engineer as well, then CS stuff won't hurt much, but I think it's a little waste of time.
besides that I'm thinking to not minor in CS, instead take my time and do research(got plenty of labs here).
My question is which path do you recommend and why? I mean which path( [Research + TA] or [minor in CS + TA]) do you find a better option later I want to apply for graduate school?
And an extra question, is it possible to hit PhD after I get my B.S.? or M.S. is an essential for the PhD?
Thank you for your time and consideration

If you're happy with the help you got here, and the server overall, you can contribute financially as well:
you have to get master's degree if you want to get phd
you can speed up your studies and finish MSc in 4.5/4/3.5 years if you want to
my honest opinion is, ask again in one year when you've had time to experience what math studies are about
I was set on phd studies by the end of my 3rd year before master studies
in the first year I was trying to quit smoking and barely scrape by
let alone make big decisions about future
Yes, the default path. Just asked since I've heard some students were able to do that.
i know people who have completed their master's in less than 5 years
Yes, possible as well, but going to be a little tense. Need to rethink if I'm able to
but I don't know of phd students straight from undergrad
if they exist, they're exceedingly rare
YES! Actually currently I'm very interested in both Image Analysis and Cryptography, and maybe some theoretical CS, but yes I can hear you, time could change my mind... IDK, a little scary, but I like to stick with a path ASAP
you will learn the pre requisities for these regardless
linear algebra and number theory
Yeah, I'm lucky we got plenty of elective math courses in my uni, and some labs to get into. Some possible for me to get involved, but mostly in data science and biology related.
Labs about image analysis and processing is kind of advanced, and I'm not qualified for now obviously, but maybe next year when I pass lin-algebra, and real-analysis, and calculus, etc...
So you are suggesting to just give up about minor in CS or researches for now? but if I want to do minor in CS, I have to sign the application in the next 2-3 weeks
my only suggestion is to just do things and see how it feels and whether it's something you want to get into in depth
but that's just my opinion
i can't/don't/won't speak for you
i get the appeal of pre meditating your future, but i'm not about that myself
