You have a system of equations:
3x^2 + 2y^2 = 12
y = x - 3
As you can see, y is already expressed in terms of x in the second equation. So, try substituting it into the first equation.
done, got 5x^2 - 12x + 18=12 , what should i do now?
Well, this is a quadratic equation. So, solve for x.
wait do i need to make it equal 0
i fogor everything i learnt
Yes.
I put that it and got math error
Don't use a calculator.
i believe this is factorable
if you set it equal to 0
I mean, doesn't matter if it is, you can just use the quadratic formula.
Why can’t I use a calculator
Because this is a math question.
But why would you use a calculator to solve a quadratic equation?
It’s quicker
That's not the point...
there’s a reason why it says math error regardless
but
before i reveal it to you
solve it by hand
it doesn’t hurt to factor or use quad formula
You need to be able to solve quadratic equations on your own.
i mean. not really, depends on the course
the maths error means that he set up something wrong with the quadratic
no, its what he entered (and im probably not gonna tell OP until they do it by hand)
oh yeah i see
thats kind of just calculator syntax though i wouldnt say it means his understanding is wrong because of that
How so? I mean, it's pretty much a fundamental skill.
my gcses (england exams u sit at 16) were both calculator papers
though i suppose u would need to be able to factor a quadratic
Math exams with calculators? Hm, that's pretty unusual...
im not sure about university but you also get a calculator for maths/further maths a level which u do at college at 18
Oh, I've never been to college. I went to university after school.
As for calculators, I've never seen them used on math exams. Physics and chemistry - obviously, but not math.
I mean, I'm not sure how a calculator is even supposed to help on a math exam in uni.
well i mean how are students meant to know sin(56)
in the uk it is
the exams are kind of designed with the fact u get a calculator in mind
you can check out their gcse's to see why
(idek why its designed like that but education systems ig)
Don't round.
Oh, right, sorry. Didn't notice that.
Still, what are the exact values you got?
i think they missed a negative sign
I didn’t write them down
yeap
Thanks
