- Do not ping the Moderators, unless someone is breaking the rules.
- Do not ping the Helper Moderators, unless there is a conflict between helpers.
- Do not ping other members randomly for help.
- Ask your question and show the work you've done so far. If you've posted a screenshot of a question, specify which part you need help with.
- Wait patiently for a helper to come along.
- If the Helper has answered your question, remember to thank them with the Mathematics Ranks bot and close the thread with:

Show your work.
wdym
...I mean... show your work. That you've done. So far.
this is my work i just know how to do the first one
That's not work, that's a list of problems.
well i havent done nothing
...so then show me what you've done.
the 14.5
Show your work for 14.2.
ok wait 30 sec
Why are you asking for help with a problem that's ahead of other problems you haven't done yet?
Okay, stop.
what
Seems you need some theoretical foundation here.
idk what to do my teacher doesnt explain anything
Yeah, that figures.
alright
Okay, so what does it mean to "solve an equation"?
find x
It's right here.
Between the 9 and the ^2.
well find the value of x
Okay, I found the value 12 by cutting a deck at the Queen of Diamonds.
well then what does it mean to solve an equation?
Okay, so we have the equation 9x^2 - 25 = 0, right?
yes
yes it is
A statement that one expression is equal to another expression.
So it's not a number, it's a statement, and it's true or false.
So this equation is true.
ok
So now we find the value of x that makes the equation true, and we do it by transforming this true equation into other true equations.
Standard algebra. If a = b, then: a + c = b + c a - c = b - c a * c = b * c a / c = b / c (c =/= 0)
So what does that tell us?
Well, if we have the equation 9x^2 - 25 = 0, we want to perform a series of transformations that eventually give us x = [some number].
Well, look at the list and see which one seems like it would be helpful.
a * c = b * c ?
Why?
because we can make 2 numbers to multiply to 25 and 2 numbers that multiply to 9x^2
You choose c, and you choose the operation.
How do I choose c?
well our school dint teach it like that
maybe
give me another example maybe i understand
9x^2 - 25 = 0 ==> 9x^2 - 25 + 25 = 0 + 25```
What, exactly, did your school "teached" you?
No, that's not what happens.
This is what happens.
That's just what it looks like.
yeah later on i understood that other method but I never saw the diference
Because this is what happens.
....c = 25.
oh so the -25 was a
No.
9x^2 - 25 = a
a = 9x^2 - 25, b = 0. a = b ==> a + c = b + c, c = 25.
...the letters represent expressions.
and the expressions are?...(just to clarify)
9x^2 - 25, 0, and 25.
so the numbers that we used to make other true statements?
What??? That's not even a coherent question.
So now you see why I need help
...okay, let's go back to this.
a is everything on the left side of an equals sign. b is everything on the right side of the same equals sign. c is any third thing.
...I think maybe you need a break.
Yes, and I think you'll have an easier time following my explanation after a break.
Well, that explains why you're tired and not following.
like real quick just write it and I try to understand after I sleep
I can't "just write it real quick" because I don't plan the whole explanation out in advance. I go a step at a time checking that you understand each step.
I'll be perfectly happy to explain it to you when you have the time and energy for it.
from the view of someone who is just starting out learning this i think it would be fair to say that this explanation needlessly complicates this
it's like a seesaw that must stay balanced, if you have 9x^2 - 25 = 0
you want x on one side of the seesaw so you move the 25 to the other side but it remains equal
@magic linden im back
