Why does derivatives need direction of function with 2 variables but functions with 1 variable don't

Shouldn't there be 2 derivatives for function f:R->R, for right vector and left vector?

there are, cause there are only 2 paths to a real number a, from the left and from the right

but recall the limit is defined provided all paths to the point gives the same value
