i saw someone post this before lol
anyways, just like model the whole thing out
and if all the info lines up, you have the answer!
Can I show you my process to affirm it is indeed 51?
Random, I am getting 21 now.
One moment, i'll show you the work.
if there were 21 people, there were 0 people behind joseph, and then there must be 0 in front of dan (0*3=0) which
doesnt line up
Yeah...
because then dan is 1st, joseph 21st, but the nubmer of people behind/in front is equal
so its not 21
Joseph finished in the 21st position
J
(num of runners ahead of Joseph)
numbers behind = 2J (given)
J+2J+1=21
(josephs position)
3J+1=21
3J=20
20/3=6
number ahead of dan = D
number behind dan = 3D
D+3D+J=tot runners
4D+6
4D=45
45/4=11
4D+6=4(11)+6
=51
oh shit i made a mistake
45/4 ≠ 11
How do you get 51?
If that's confirmed to be the right answer.
wait what
where did this come from
the people behind DAN was 2J btw
Just ignore it please.
not joseph
Okay.
where did 45 coem from
@rustic lake Suppose Joseph finished in position n. Then, suppose N(behind Dan)/N(in front of Joseph) = x and N(behind Joseph)/N(in front of Dan) = y.
Suppose there were n runners in total, and Joseph and Dan finished in places x and y, respectively. Also, suppose the given ratios are p and q. Then:
(n - y)/(x - 1) = p
(n - x)/(y - 1) = q
Expressing y gives:
y = n - p(x - 1)
y = 1 + (n - x)/q
So, we get n - p(x - 1) = 1 + (n - x)/q. You can find n from here, then substitute p = 2, q = 3, x = 21.
Solve for n.
nope neevrmind d
what we know n ???
this is so ai gen
i solved it
- makes n josephs position
nope darpinger gave that to me
- instantly turns around and says n is the total number of people
damn
darp what are ya doing 😭
what he do
Okay, all seriousness, random, the answer is 51 though, correct?
Can I show you my process?
Going off what Darpinger originally gave me.
sure yea
i think it is 51 if i remember the question answer correctly but not 100% sure
but iff you send your work i can tell you if its right
After substituting, n-2(21-1)=1+(n-21)/3 is what you get.
n - 2 * 20 = 1 + n-21/3
n - 40 = 1 + n-21/3
3n - 120 = 3 + n - 21
3n - 120 = n - 18
102/2
n = 51
good job
