Hellooo ım a math teacher candidate and the professor gave all class a presentation assignment basically ı have to create a lesson plan with tons of activities and materials so students can learn the subject by exploring it themselfs... and difficult part is my subject is : ''Creates and interprets equations, tables and graphs of real-life situations containing linear relationships.'' so yea basically showing real life events and want kids to create equation, table and graph out of it but 5E lesson plan has like : entry, exploring, explaining, elaborate and evaluate steps and ı have to make sure to create at least five activity to cover each step but how am ı supposed to find that many? and how can ı be like staying on kids level (secondary school subject) while doing it... ı know ı soud like fool being a candidate and having trouble in this but ı really dont have much ideas here is what ı thoughts so far:

ı can give students few linear graph and then want them to create stories or problems with it like '' in your opinion what kind of situation does this graph show? can you try to explain?'' or perhaps ı could go and find some historical story of linear algebra and showing it on the graph that could be good entrance step ı guess and fisrt one ı said could be exploring part ? but then ı also need to add few things to make students also try to find equation and table versions of it... as for eloborate ı will try design a activity using mathematical modelling ı also came up with few ideas but ı might change it since one of the most important thing in mathematical modelling you have to make sure everything is close to reality so my idea was like a bakery owner realized that with inflation in economy people are buying less of their cakes (ım living in Turkey so story makes sense here) so he wanna get new fresh cake ideas too sell so he can provide bakery costs and make profit of it but ı havent go in any detail so... what do you think? can you pls help for ideas? 🥲

  1. Ask your question and show the work you've done so far. If you've posted a screenshot of a question, specify which part you need help with.
  2. Wait patiently for a helper to come along.
  3. Once someone helps you, say thank you and close the thread with:

  4. Feel free to nominate the person for helper of the week in #helper-nominations
  5. Do not ping the mods, unless someone is breaking the rules.
  6. If you're happy with the help you got here, and the server overall, you can contribute financially as well:

If they want more application based ideas, a very common process in data analysis is the linearization of the data. For example under suitable assumptions, a ball thrown horizontally from a cliff satisfies $y=\frac{g}{2}t^2$. If you plot $y$ against $x:=t^2$, you get a linear equation with slope $m:=\frac{g}{2}$, which gives a way they can compute $g$

that gives a less toy example of how lines are used, albeit might be better towards the end of the unit due to likely complications/complicated

#

the bakery idea sounds fine, especially for the end E's.. less sure on how engaged your students would be with talking about inflation lol

lol problem is things are getting horrible here so even a little kids talk about politics and they even know more than ı know 0-0 ...

cest la vie shrug

I dont know what a typical grade 9 Turkish classroom is like, so I cant help with specific engaging topics

ah ıts 8 actually

#

but yeah you are also right about inflation since there is also rule that we shouldnt take bad examples or negative things while teaching

#

ı guess ım going to change to ''someone who wants to open bakery''

Yeah

#

But yeah, your topic sounds perfect for stuff like lines of best fit

#

Give them a table of data, have them plot it as a scatter plot, then they have to approximate the LoBF and compute its equation

#

then have them interpolate/extrapolate unknowns from their line

hmm ım ashamed that ı cant see any creative ideas to be honest ı cant really see clear activities haha thank you for first step example ı can search for realllyy popular topics and then try to get some linear graphs out of it

#

thank you for the ideas!
