how to factorise

#

i got -x^2-4x-1

#

but how is it +4x

lone storm
#

distribute the negative after you factor.

#

when doing the a^2-2ab+b^2

#

b is still 2

#

the negative doesnt change it

#

it only changes the + or - 2ab

#

is that correct

#

so b is +2 in this equation

#

I always do it piece wise

#

So you have 3 - (x-2)(x-2) . ok after that you would factor

#

doing it piecewise looks like this

#

xx + (-2)x + x(-2) + (-2)(-2)

#

which would give you

#

x^2-4x+4

#

following so far?

#

Then you put it back in your equation. Keep in mind that it is 3 - (factored equation)

#

so you have to distribute the - through the whole thing

#

so y = 3 - (x^2 - 4x +4)

#

@bronze swallow does this make sense?

#

yes. basically

bronze swallow
#

ok yes that makes sense

#

then after you factor you distribute the negative so you would have:

#

3 + (-1)(x^2) + (-1)(-4x) + (-1)(4)

#

the negative sign is essentially a saying you have (3) + a (-1) times (your factor)
