The quantity that is conserved before and after the splitting into branches is the total volume of air passing through the ducts per unit of time
which for each duct can expressed as Cross-sectional area * Air velocity = pi * r^2 * v
Now v is also to be required to be preserved
Hence pi * (radius of original duct)^2 = pi * (radius of branching duct 1)^2 + pi * (radius of branching duct 2)^2
The factor of pi can also be divided from each side
Hence the squares of radii of the branching ducts add up to the squared radius of the original duct
