the formula for test-statistic involves √n or √n-1
I've seen them interchangeably at many places which led me to have sleepless nights

I assume you mean quantiles?
Unfortunately, that's because many tables are compiled for the degrees of freedom of the test, which is n - 1, but some are compiled just for Student's distribution, so just n.
Formally, the quantiles present in the confidence interval for mean with unknown variance are with (n - 1) degrees of freedom.

Well, the statistic should be (<X> - μ)/(S(X)/√(n)). Using √(n - 1) in it is incorrect.
