Is net area taking the areas of certain intervals of a function on a graph, and considering them as either positive or negative, then adding them together?

Is total area just adding up everything all at ounce and not considering if the area between the X-axis and function is below or above the axis?

If I was given a table and told to find the net area and total area well being given a function, could I just find the anti derivatives, look at where the function crosses the X axis and use F(b)-F(a) to find the areas
