It's actually pretty simple

What you want is the average speed

How do we get the average? Well, we know you drive half the journey at speed 1 $s_1$ and half the journey at speed 2 $s_2$

so what do we do?

We just add both up together and divide by two 🙂

$s_{avg} = \frac{s_1 + s_2}{2}$

Now you might ask yourself, how do we get $s_2$?

Well, that's just x, since x is the average speed of the second part of the journey.

So here you have the final function:

$f(x) = \frac{s_1 + x}{2}$
