Two water taps together can fill a tank in 9$\frac{3}{8}$ hours. The tap of larger diameter takes 10 hours less than the smaller one to fill the tank separately. Find the time(in hrs.) in which tap of smaller diameter can separately fill the tank

  1. Wait patiently for a helper to come along.
  2. Once someone helps you, say thank you and close the thread with:

  1. Feel free to nominate the person for helper of the week in #helper-nominations
  2. Do not ping the mods, unless someone is breaking the rules.
  3. If you're happy with the help you got here, and the server overall, you can contribute financially as well:

How 1/a and 1/b? , that's my doubt .

two taps fill the tank in 9$\frac{3}{8}$ hours
tap a: fills it with $\frac{1}{a}$ per hour
tap b: fills it with $\frac{1}{b}$ per hour
In other words:

  1. Equation: 9$\frac{3}{8}$ * $\frac{1}{a}$ + 9$\frac{3}{8}$ * $\frac{1}{b}$ = 1
Since tap a is 10 hours faster than tap b
  2. Equation: a = b - 10

You can simplify from there, no?

#

(sorry, I am not used to using latex)

#

Now just insert equation 2 into equation 1

#

and you can solve for b
