in order to get that last column to equal 0 the previous will have to be d. Because u will have to multiply d by -1 to get -d and get rid of d
...okay, it kind of feels like you jumped ahead a step.
Like, the procedurally appropriate way to do this would be to do the synthetic division normally, then note that the remainder, d - c - 12, must equal 0.

But the important point to find here is that d = 12 + c.
