Post the question

fast wedge
#

There are 5 questions

#

But thats the first one.

fast wedge
stoic arrow
#

Set up an equation with the principal as the unknown. (x*1.025 - 1000)*1.025 = 23517.6

fast wedge
#

I'm confused what will be the answer?

stoic arrow
#

x will be the answer. Solve for x

fast wedge
#

I don't know how to do that, sorry.

stoic arrow
#

Look at the operations needed to “isolate x”. First, divide both sides by 1.025 to isolate the expression in parentheses. Next, add 1000 to both sides. Finally, divide both sides by 1.025, and you will have a value for x

fast wedge
#

Im only 14 and im really confused

#

Please could you tell me the answer?

stoic arrow
#

I could, but that won’t help you at all. Let’s take it step by step (and maybe try closing fortnite for the moment)

#

We want the equation to be in the form x = (some value). But we have all these other things attached to x, which we want to get rid of

fast wedge
#

It's been in the background. I have not been playing.

stoic arrow
#

The first thing to get rid of is the factor of 1.025. So, we divide both sides by that. What do you get?

fast wedge
#

What are botth sides?

stoic arrow
#

(x*1.025 - 1000)*1.025 = 23517.6

#

The left and right sides of =

fast wedge
#

uh

stoic arrow
#

“Left” refers to the expression (x*1.025 -1000)* 1.025

#

“Right” refers to 23517.6

fast wedge
#

ok

#

right = 22944

#

i don't know how to do left.

stoic arrow
#

The left side is much easier. Because we’ve divided by 1.025, we can just remove that factor.

fast wedge
#

ok

#

(x*-1000)

stoic arrow
#

But not the factor inside the parentheses. We only removed the one on the outside

fast wedge
#

im so confused 😭

#

please may i have the answers then you teach me because i will get a detention

stoic arrow
#

But it’s due tomorrow. Out of curiosity have you taken pre algebra, algebra 1?

fast wedge
#

No

#

I live in the uk

#

And I am 14

#

So idk the system

stoic arrow
#

What have you learned?

fast wedge
#

If you could tell me the answer and then explain how to find it i would be really happy

fast wedge
#

Please please please @stoic arrow please give me the answers.

#

In math

fast wedge
#

you dont choose

#

u do everything

#

in the uk

stoic arrow
#

We’re like halfway to the answer lol

fast wedge
#

i have 5 more questions to do

#

please give me the answers and then explain it

#

so it guarantess i dont get detention

#

please

#

Im begging of you @stoic arrow

stoic arrow
#

Well we have 1.025x - 1000 = 22944. Now, subtract 1000 “from both sides”, just like how we divided before

fast wedge
#

1.025x = 21944

stoic arrow
#

Now, can you figure out the last step?

fast wedge
#

1.025 x 21944?

stoic arrow
#

Not sure what that means. But, we should divide “both sides” once again by 1.025. What’s 21944/1.025?

fast wedge
#

21408.78049

stoic arrow
#

Round that to 2 decimal places, and that’s Carol’s original investment.

fast wedge
#

21408.78

#

?

stoic arrow
#

Yep. Now the hard part of these problems, which I did for this one, is setting up the equation in the first place

fast wedge
#

it says its wrong

stoic arrow
#

So, we get 1.025x = 23944

fast wedge
#

mhm?

stoic arrow
#

x=23360

fast wedge
#

ty

#

ty very much!

#

How do you know what equation to set up?

#

NEXT QUESTION!

stoic arrow
#

If some amount x increases by 5% every year, how do you represent the increase over, say, k years?

fast wedge
#

k = 5?

#

k+5?

stoic arrow
#

No, you need the expression x(1.05^k)

fast wedge
#

how did u get that

stoic arrow
#

Are you familiar with exponents at least?

fast wedge
#

nope

stoic arrow
#

Ah. I fear I don’t have time to teach you everything you need…I recommend going through some of the pre-algebra/middle school material on khan academy to prepare you for doing algebra

fast wedge
#

Okat.

#

But how do i do the question

#

Or if you can give answer i dont mind

stoic arrow
#

12000(0.97^2)(1.07^3)

fast wedge
#

so what would the answer be.

stoic arrow
#

Do u not have a calculator?

fast wedge
#

I do

#

I didnt know you could put this in a calculator "^"

#

What is that

stoic arrow
#

13831.72, round to 13832

#

^ denotes exponentiation

#

Just like how multiplication is repeated addition, exponentiation is repeated multiplication

fast wedge
#

ty

#

im making account for kahn

#

whats the answer for this one

#

Also what math courses should i pick?

stoic arrow
#

I have to go now, but try to apply what you (hopefully) learned from the first 2 problems

fast wedge
#

Please answer the question before u leave

#

and what courses should i pick

stoic arrow
#

I think there’s a placement test maybe? When you’re done with hw, take that to figure out your courses in khan academy

#

There should be courses before that. I’m not sure you’re ready for pre algebra if you are completely unfamiliar with something like exponents and division

the exact one is 38047.25 pounds

@delicate juniper

delicate juniper

oh you meant that question

I gave you first answer lol

oh

delicate juniper

answer on this one is absolute value of (A-B)/A*100

#

so it is 95000-80000

#

divided by 80000

#

and it is 0.1875

so 18.75 percents

@fast wedge
