im just beginning with lagrangian mechanics and im finding the concept of a functional and the derivative of a functional quite difficult to intuitively understand (my intuition is mostly visual, i'd like to find some intuition for the functional akin to how a function can be thought of as a curve or a surface)
any further insight on the euler-lagrange equation would also be of great help, however this is not necessary at this moment
