Minimum and maximum points using calculus.

I know you can find a maximum or minimum point of a function by using the first derivative, however, what if said function has a local maximum and a local minimum? How would you selectively find one of those and not the other?

finding the first derivative and setting it to 0 gives you all turning points which includes global max, global min, local max, and local min
