I believe this was after the patch to fix the "not connected to internet" issue that they fixed yesterday around 5 AM and the patch did something odd to the MP portion of the game. They are working on it.

I did this with my husband yesterday, with friend code and invite through steam, verified files exited and went back in, uninstalled the game and reinstalled and he kept having the "Connecting to Server" all day. Haven't tried it today though. It's an issue with the patch from when some couldn't connect to MP due to the bug "No Internet Connection."
