#Unreal Engine crash when launching game, hosting/joining multiplayer and loading saves (Steam)

Hello! So I’ve been experiencing this error for a while when launching the game from Steam. And I’ve been doing a workaround of verifying files, launching the game, getting an Unreal Engine crash report, sending and restarting and then I can play. It hasn’t been ideal, but it meant I can play, even if my Steam achievements don’t trigger.

The problem today has been while trying to host or even join a multiplayer game. If I try to join via a code, no server is found. If I try to host, the game crashes.

The workaround still works, and I can launch via Project Coral. However, I’m unable to load any games. Or participate in multiplayer games

Reproduction Steps: Hit Play in Steam on Coral Island. A few seconds later, the Unreal Engine 4 Crash Report shows. See attachments. / click to load a save. A few minutes later the Unreal Engine 4 Crash Report shows. See attachments.

Repro Rate: Every time I hit play in Steam for Coral Island/ every time I load a save file

Game Platform: Steam

Game Version: 1.2 - 1238

Input Mode: Keyboard and Mouse

PC and GPU specs details:
Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core Processor
Installed RAM: 16.0 GB
System type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060
Driver Version: 32.015.8097
Windows 11

I'm having the exact same issue! On my new laptop I've always had that same Unreal Engine crash upon launching the game from Steam, but was able to work around that by running it as an administrator from the .exe file. Then after this update, the game will launch but every time I hit play and select a save file, the game crashes after appearing to load for a few seconds. I get the exact same unhandled exception: exception_access_violation reading address 0x0000000000000000 crash every time. It also happens after the character creator when trying to start a new game.

I've tried multiple fixes, including verifying files on steam, checking firewall settings, doing a clean install of my NVIDIA graphics driver, using -dx11 and -dx12 in the steam launch options, turning off full-screen optimization, running in compatibility mode, uninstalling and reinstalling the game, and nothing has made any change. Will make my own post too, but glad to see I'm not the only one with this issue.

Hello @dawn moss @noble silo,

I’m so sorry about the crash that’s preventing you from opening your save file and playing 🙇‍♀️

By any chance, do you have a video of when the crash occurred? That would be very helpful for the team to review it.

Hello! I seem to have the same or similar issue. I haven't played for some time and wanted to check out the new update. Unfortunately, the game crashes immediately when trying to launch from Steam and while it seems to load when starting it from the .exe file it crashes again when trying to load a saved game. I already verified the installation, updated my graphics card driver, and reinstalled the game.

Reproduction Steps: Launching the game through Steam or trying to load my Saved Game from the .exe file.

I've tried repeatedly to record video of the crash, and every time there is no recording available on Steam after the crash. I'm not sure if the problem is due to needing to run the program as an administrator in order for the game to launch? I've tried it with the automatic recording setting and the manual recording, and neither option works. If I don't run it as an administrator the crash report comes up immediately upon launching the game, without even a startup screen appearing, and there's still no video. I'm going to record it on my phone and post that.

Hello @noble silo @dawn moss @floral sluice, thank you for sharing other details and the video!

I've relayed this to the team. Following our internal investigation - we suspect that a third-party application may be interfering with the Unreal Engine’s online subsystem, which could be preventing it from initializing properly and contributing to the crash you're experiencing.

To help us determine whether multiple applications are attempting to use the same network port, we kindly ask that you follow the steps below:

  1. Launch Coral Island (even if the game crashes, please leave the Unreal Engine crash window open).

  2. Open the Command Prompt by typing cmd into the Windows search bar and pressing Enter.
-In the Command Prompt window, enter the following command and press Enter: netstat -ano | findstr :27015
-Take a screenshot of the results and attach it to your reply.

  3. Open Task Manager by right-clicking on the taskbar.
-Right-click on the column header in Task Manager and enable the PID (Process ID) column.
-Take a screenshot of this view as well and include it with your response.

This information will help us identify whether any conflicting applications are occupying the port used by the game. Thank you so much! 🙌

Hi @molten canyon the cmd prompt didn't return anything for me and my Task Manager only shows the UE Crash Report Client. Screenshots are attached. I hope this helps.

@molten canyon I also had nothing returned when running that cmd prompt. I have Coral Island running, on the main menu, when I run the prompt and it gives no result. For the task manager, I've attached my screenshot. No other apps with the same PID, but I noticed a background process with the Coral Island icon so included that as well, in addition to a second screenshot with details of the two processes side by side, in case that's anything useful.

Hi @molten canyon Just for awareness I seen the Command Prompt step on another crash report and tried it previously. I'm getting the same outcome I did before, where the code appears to be doing nothing with the crash report open. However, if I run it with coral island running I do get an output.

I've also attached two screenshots of task manager, with the game running and the other with just the crash report running.

@molten canyon Please let me know if you require additional screenshots or anything Duck_Saluting_Emoji

Hello again. I think I might have resolved my issue. I had forgotten our home network adjusts users 'My Documents' folder to the network home storage using an UNC path (\servername\userfolders\username\documents). This has caused some issues in the past with other games parsing that string. I use a VBS script that quickly switches the location in the registry back to the local machine when run for 60 seconds. This allows the game to launch and read the local location, storing local files locally. After the time runs out the script switches the network location back and the game still uses the local location while running. This wasn't an issue in the past when playing Coral Island so I hadn't thought about it for troubleshooting.
I'm not sure if this helps anyone else but it seemed to have resolved the issue for me as I was able to launch the game and load my old save file.

Hello there! Our team has reviewed your video and would like to ask — have you been playing in Offline mode? If so, could you try switching to Online mode and see if the crash still occurs?

You can enable Online mode on Steam by going to Steam > Go Online.
Please let us know how it goes! Thank you. 🙌

@molten canyon is there any updates? I still am unable to play the game at all and I'd really like to, especially with the new features introduced in the update

Hi hi! Thank you so much for your patience! 🙏 The team is still actively investigating this issue.

In the meantime, another player mentioned that they were able to resolve the issue by creating a new local admin account on their PC — you can try this workaround to see if it works for you too:

Hopefully, this helps while we continue looking into it. Let us know how it goes!

Hello! Sorry for not responding sooner, I must have missed the notification from your reply, and I stepped away from the game for a while hoping the issue would resolve over time. I think I was playing in offline mode before, prior to the update it hadn't made a difference either way. I just installed the latest update, tried launching in online mode, and I'm still having the same crash. I'll try the local admin account you recommended and see if that helps.

@molten canyon Well, the local admin account did the trick! Just played for a couple hours with no problems! I'd love to hear back if the team ever figures out the root issue, but for now it's great to have a workaround. Thank you!
