best tools to obtain hardwood

I read somewhere to destroy the big log you need a silver axe but when I try it says I don’t have the right tool… I ended up blowing it up with an explosive to get hardwood but before I upgrade to a gold axe can someone confirm if that’s the right upgrade?

Also besides, the big logs, is there another way to get hardwood? Do the big logs respawn??

Silver for the fallen logs off the farm, gold for the ones on the farm

The big logs off the farm respawn, and you'll eventually unlock an area with hardwood trees that regrow like the rest
