White can't be planted on for trees.
Same process for outside the greenhouse

Actually it happens with all the saplings, i don’t know why but they need not 8 but 24 tiles free when you plant them, which you can reduce to 8 and they’ll still grow after that

I planted mine with as a 3x3 just fine. All of them

It only needs a 5x5 when you're first planting it. After that you can fill in around it- or so I've been told. I haven't had time to find out myself.
But literally once placed use that space as you please
