If it makes anyone feel any better, I had a lot of really clear signs from a young age (starting around 3-4 and really obvious by the time I was 7-8) - issues with my body (to the point that I asked my parents if they'd changed me as a baby or if aliens had modified me in my sleep one night as part of some experiment or something), asking for a different name, making bedsheets into skirts when I was in private, wearing my mom's clothing when my parents were out, fantasizing about getting pregnant, and all kinds of other stuff that more aware and accepting parents these days would probably recognize pretty quickly, but I didn't grow up in that kind of environment, and even with all that I still get serious imposter syndrome on bad days because more masculine stuff doesn't feel totally wrong 100% of the time, just 98% of the time, and that 2% is enough to make me wonder if I'm just faking it or putting myself through a lot of extra work that maybe wasn't 'truly necessary' because things felt okay the way they were at least a few hours to a few days per year.

I wanted to be a girl but I didn’t know that trans people existed or that medical or social stuff was possible till later in life since I didn’t have internet access till my late teens or early twenties and I grew up with very heavily filtered media access - no cable tv or anything, limited library selection in a small-medium and very conservative town, super invasive parents, etc. I flipped between thinking something was horribly wrong with me and assuming that all guys felt like that and just hid it better than I did.

But anyway, folks who feel like imposters or like they’re not trans enough are definitely not alone. It’s a pretty common experience since you grow up with most of the world telling you that you’re one thing, even your own body telling you that, but really you’re something else.

So I'm 18, and got a plane ticket to meet up with my friend. Problem is my Mom insisted on tagging along.

She's transphobic, and my friend is trans but experiences no physical dysphoria.

So he's very visibly trans.
What do I do?

I think it might be a good idea to explain to her. Because going into a situation where you know one person will be uncomfortable or even upset, youre more likely to have them last out in anger. If she still insists on going, it may be because she wants to challenge her views. If she then says she doesn't want to go, then you're free haha

Since you are 18, you are free to go wherever you wish and meet whoever you wish.

honestly the best course of action is discussing this with your friend

since we obviously dont know how long your mom is insisting on tagging along and in what way it's a little hard than to give anything more than general advice

i mean i have to assume your friend already knows your mom is transphobic?

but i think you should discuss what to do with the situation regardless, especially if your mom is planning to tag along any longer than like an hour

in terms of how they feel abt it, if temporarily closeting is safer for your friend than it perhaps might be comfortable, if there might be ways to make your mom back off of bringing any of it up alltogether; that sort of stuff

I suppose it helps I've been in that situation myself on both sides seeing I've been out to friends and having to hide it from their parents and friends of mine are trans and have to hide it from every other adult around them p much

Discussing what does and doesn't fit in the other person's boundaries and how you can keep to them while keeping your friend safe are super important here

The harsh reality of living as an LGBTQ+ person.

It stresses me out that straight people sugarcoat our experiences as being fun and carefree and free to love whomever we want, but in the harsh reality we know it's straightwashing the difficult experiences of real lives.

There's a serious flaw in always acting like everything's okay when it's not. And until we face those systemic issues and acknowledge that they exist, we're going to continue to be targeted by people who hate us.
