WIP. I'm sewing the clothes of a video game's character (with the adaptations required by the fact that this is made of real linen, non-magically stretchable, and implies that you can put your head through the collar). This is the underdress: the most visually meaningful piece, going on top, is still missing. Can one of you guess to which character, from which game, this garment belongs? :-) I'm not striving for 100% accuracy, rather for a "real-life" interpretation of the original (especially regarding the decorated band at the bottom, much larger than the model, because the thick and sturdy fabric I got (preferable if, as the original character, you go running around in the forest) makes tiny details impossible... I had to upscale every decoration. The stars are fairly large but were still a pain to cut, pre-sew and apply X) because of the thickness).

She was very disappointed to learn Sol wouldn't hurt a fly, and is just a dumbass hopeless romantic. (She still loves them all the same.)

I work on multiple layers when I draw different pieces of clothing so rn it’s almost maxing out on layers but I plan on flattening the line art by pose and its major clothing colour layers. So at the end I’m expecting at least 14 layers for all the poses. 😄

I agree! This is adorable! ❤️ I find that everybody has a unique art style that is molded by the art/artists that we love! Learning the basics of anatomy, perspective and clothing folds is essential though. That needs to practiced as much as possible. I still struggle with the basics a lot of the time and I burn out after a while and need to work on something else to recharge.😅
You can see my struggle with Ben’s arm here. Just when I thought I was done with it I find that his arm looks like it’s in the wrong position. 😭 I moved it several times and it still doesnt look right to me. I might just leave it… move on to my Scott art. 🥲

I think you can start by trying to pinpoint which parts you really like about their art, and then specifically practicing that one part until it feels natural to draw and incorporate into your art?

I think trying to improve your art while using your favorite artists as inspo can help you improve more, actually. It gives you a reference and end goal so it's easier to make the climb.
Doing so lets you learn their techniques and such, stuff you might not have known to do because you aren't quite at their level yet. But by learning from them, you can pick up that knowledge better and maybe faster, too ^^
Iunno, just the thoughts of somebody who was stuck until I tried learning from somebody else's art

I may be a bit late but I think it looks good so far! 😊 The only thing that looks a little off anatomically is the chest. Maybe lower the breast down a bit? The breast weight looks a bit flat and pushed back with the way it’s lined heavily on the sides like she is wearing a very tight bandage. I can see you’re going for an athletic body type if you want it to be a little more feminine you can soften the creases in the hip area. I agree with @narrow field and @hazy mantle ! Having your fave artist’s works inspire you and getting yourself hyped up and in the mood to draw is key to growing. When you paint something its always good to draw out the basic shapes (most common is drawing a shape similar to a sack of flour to get the torso shape and movement down, it’s a common practice during life drawing classes). Omit the the colours and light if you want to focus on anatomy and work your way through the rest. Watching in-person art time-lapses are also great to learn the process of line quality in different areas such as hair and eyes, ect. and learn the process of sketch to painting (or inked coloured illustration).
It all boils down to practice and inspiration though. So find something that inspires you to draw and pour your emotions into it. 💗 Take breaks when you need them.

Nice!! 🧡🦊 The face looks great so far! Do you plan on rigging the head with specific detailed facial controls or just create blendshapes for major mouth, eyes, brow control? When I did my thesis film I ended up with blendshapes to save time during crunch time but messed my workflow since I modelled my character in hopes to use clothing physics so the skin underneath my character’s dress would pop several times in scenes. 😭 I’d love to see your thesis once it’s done if you’re willing to share! ✨🙏💖

I’m still new in the business of art commissions but I find that a lot of my artist friends use their twitter and instagram to indicate when commissions are open and have a price list pinned to the top of their twitters. The most successful freelance artists usually bring in potential customers by posting fan art of the most popular games/movies/anime. 🔍👀

I decided that it would be for the best if I were to change the ways I did shading and outlines. Upside is that it looks better in MY eyes, but the down side is that ill need to fix all the other sprites which will take a bit of time.
But again, most people find a lot of success commission wise when it comes to fanarts and such, but everyone should remember not to do something just for the sake of it.

Twitter does have some infamy for toxic behaviour but if you stay just for the artists/art it’s all good. 👌 I try to follow the ones that are strictly art related and not personal. I find that really bold lineart goes well with simple minimal colouring (shadow blocking and a colour gradient, similar to DC Comic, The World Ends With You, and Persona 4/5 style) while thinner lineart goes well with cell-shaded colouring. You can try out a painterly colouring style that blends into the 'inner' lineart so you can keep the bold line art you like while blending in the lines where there are creases and folds?
(Not sure I explained it right 😅 here is an example)

Another example, you can see the lineart in the hand seamlessly blends with the hand's 'outer' line art. You can even blur the knuckle lineart and blend it into the colouring.

I did this quickly but it’s essentially like traditional painting but with greyscale. 😅 My style is a little more toward the realistic side but this colouring works with any art style. David’s rendered art works this way as well if I remember correctly.
Sketch, define, add grey colour palette, turn the layer on ‘multiply’ or ‘linear burn’, and add layers of colours. 🎨
You can layer on top of your greyscale render to add more definition to the art too. It’s all about exploration and finding the best way for you. 🙏

you just gotta set the layer to multiply and add colour, shadow and light!
The hardest part is knowing your hard and soft shadows paired with your knowledge of human anatomy and clothing creases. 🥲

I love the golden glow! ✨ Her hand furthest away from us seems a little small in comparison to the one nearest to us. …Not unless this is a demonic feature of her anatomy. 😅 If it is, maybe add a little more demonic details to it to show it is something to be afraid of.

It still seems small to me… the distance between the two hands shouldn’t be too far apart. The shoulders and torso aren’t really selling the distance of the other hand, I think.
