How's the Apollo series? Is it good? I haven't started it
I'm currently reading Cassandra Claire's Magnus Bane stories
I only read the first two books in the trials of Apollo series b4 I got distracted by other things, but I really enjoyed the series
Sorry for late reply and Currently am not reading it due to having to deal with a big move but am looking forward to it
Books was first thing along with my gaming set up I unpacked lol
I loved the Apollo series, but I need the read the last two books
Oh man I love that series
Yessss I like CC's shadow world thingy series
But her latest main shadow series I haven't read. Just gonna wait until everything ends
Except magnus bane's of course hehe
Anyone read green creek?
Not yet! What is it about?
This is my novel , but i only write it in bahasa indonesia ,hope you like it guys
I loved the Name of The Wind and Wise Man's Fear! Sadly I don't think we'll ever get the third book...
Any fans of The Dresden Files here?
@rare gyro werewolves and witches ๐
He's made some good progress on it on YouTube lately. He's also announced he's gonna have to split it into 2 more, which he really didn't want to do. I think that's part of what was taking so long
Finished Name of the Wind it was so incredible so im super sad that thereโs probably not going to be a third book
I've heard that before so I really don't want to get my hopes up. Rothfuss is such a tease ๐ฆ
Rothfuss, Lynch and Martin are all on my "im sad these books will probably never get finished" shelf lol
Yasss. do you have Wise Man's Fear? It's really good and not just for a sequel
I actually just got it and am hoping to start it soon
Sounds like what I'll like lol. I'll read it once my Magnus Bane is done
I remember purchasing name of the wind when I was in high school.....
I waited too long for the sequel I ended up completely forgetting abt it ๐
The author is one if my favourites and he's winning awards for one of his books I believe.
All lgbtq+ friendly too
Anyone have any good sci-fi novels that have come out lately? Anything especially with Aliens, either invasion or first contact stuff, war
Gideon the Ninth & the sequel Harrow the Ninth are crazy good. Not properly aliens, but necromancy as science and planet-eating monsters. The tone isn't for everyone's taste (very irreverent, there are memes!) but it's a fantastic ride
I'd also always rec Ancillary Justice by Anne Leckie, the short description is a spaceship's AI is trapped in a single person's body and goes on a mission of Revenge against the empire that killed her captain. I have yet to finish the trilogy yet, though
also recommend Ancillary Justice
ohhh, if you want some cool stuff with aliens and alien linguistics, Embassytown by China Mieville is very good.
Have you read Old Man's War? It's like Starship Troopers, only better.
Nope. I haven't. Think I will look into that though, thanks for recommendation!
I'm partial to The Forever War by Joe Haldeman. It uses real astrophysics as a key plot point, so the distances and times involved have a huge influence. Would highly recommend it.
If anyone likes Fantasy I can't recommend Scott Lynch's The Gentlemen Bastards series enough
Itโs pretty good. I stopped at the second book though
Ah. Thatโs probably why I stopped. Thereโs a 6 year gap between book 2 and 3
To be fair, Red Seas under Red Skies is the weakest book in the series. It was good, but definitely not as good as The Lies of Locke Lamora or Republic of Thieves. It was like super random 'hey let's be pirates" lol
what is it about/
?*
That's a very complicated question. ๐
well, answer, I suppose
loaded question
It's not a high fantasy series (lots of magic), much more low fantasy (some magic, but not easily accessible). It follows Locke Lamora through some crazy hijinks and a much darker subplot that is the overarching theme through the three books. I haven't read the 3rd book yet, but they are my husband's maybe... second favorite series of books, behind the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett
I think you'd like this!
I'll definitely check it out! Thanks
With a bit of Robin Hood in it.
i do love stealing from the rich ๐
Or as I like to describe it, Godfather meets A Song of Ice and Fire with a little bit of Ocean's <insert number here>
Now I just wanna read those books again. I still need to read the 3rd one
If you're into dark / grim fantasy, could I interest you in a little Joe Abercrombie or Robin Hobb?
The Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop is also really good, and has many books now beyond the trilogy
Me: I read so many books! I know so many books!
Someone else: So, what books do you recommend?
Me: what is A Bรผuk, Preshus?
omg i just realised you got promoted to moderator. congratz lol
Oh thank you!
The prince of thorns is pretty dark and grim
I need to get into reading again but my motivation is low
I need to finish reading the first book of the series I just started... but my attention span has been so low lately.
A lot of people are put off by Jorg's actions in the first few moments of the book though. Book needs a LOT of trigger warnings.
I also recommend A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A Brown. Really good mythology inspired by west Africa!
I love Robin Hobb
Anthony Ryan is also good.
Diving in to scream about Discworld, which is the best.
I also just finished a book called Hekla's Children, it's a horror-sort-of and it's pretty good!
Imma just say it so people don't think it's like just a brutal scene. The tw needed for the first scene in Prince of Thorns is rape.
Oh has anyone read Gideon the Ninth and Harrow the Ninth? Suuuuch a good series
They're on my TBR along with 5 million other books, I need time to slow down so I can catch up
I feel this on a spiritual level
Gideon/Harrow are also on my TBR!
i have!! they're soooooooo good i absolutely cannot wait for alecto the ninth
i liked gideon the ninth but i LOOOVED harrow the ninth
such a crazy book
I love how Gideon the Ninth was just like "sup dudes here's some memes, good vibes and bones lol"
And Harrow the Ninth was like "Hello, friends, today I bring to you crippling depression and heartbreak enjoy"
I am so beyond pumped for Alecto
I haven't read Harrow yet but Gideon was definitely that! ๐
Prepare for melancholy and sapphic tension and then more melancholy
Figure i share a few of my comics here. It's a book right๐ . I have "actual book" too
Wow you have Deceased!
yess i tried to get the horror homage by yasmine putri.
I wanted to have her woman of X-men past/present connecting cover but it's sold out too
Her art is amaaazing
My friend bought me a book for my bday and im rationing myself to a chapter a night now bc its so wholesome and cute and gah
what book??
lol
Oop
The house in the crucelen sea
T j klune is a fave author
@timber hull @rugged dagger i recommend it ๐ฅบ โค๏ธ
Has anyone read Lore? is it good? seen it on book tiktok a lot
I have the same question honestly
I'm reading that right now too! It's so good
what chapter are you on? I have 7/8 left ๐ญ
I think I'm only on chapter 7 right now!
๐ฅบ im excited for you theres so much cuteness
@silent quarry have you read green creek?
Not yet but it's on my list! ๐
I still have 2 to read ๐ญ ๐ im putting them off
oh wow it's sold out!
I just finished reading Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson, flew through it one day and think I just started down a multi-book rabbit hole.
Keep an eye out for it ๐
Ooooo ๐ whats it about?
The Mistborn series is really good. I inadvertantly annoyed my mother by picking up the final book first XD
Oh probably. But it's very good. Sanderson is an excellent writer.
"For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison. Kelsier "snapped" and found in himself the powers of a Mistborn. A brilliant thief and natural leader, he turned his talents to the ultimate caper, with the Lord Ruler himself as the mark.
Kelsier recruited the underworld's elite, the smartest and most trustworthy allomancers, each of whom shares one of his many powers, and all of whom relish a high-stakes challenge. Only then does he reveal his ultimate dream, not just the greatest heist in history, but the downfall of the divine despot.
But even with the best criminal crew ever assembled, Kel's plan looks more like the ultimate long shot, until luck brings a ragged girl named Vin into his life. Like him, she's a half-Skaa orphan, but she's lived a much harsher life. Vin has learned to expect betrayal from everyone she meets, and gotten it. She will have to learn to trust, if Kel is to help her master powers of which she never dreamed.
This saga dares to ask a simple question: What if the hero of prophecy fails?"
Oof that didn't look as long on Amazon lol
I'll throw it on my wish to read list
If you want a free intro to his work he offers the novel Warbreaker for free on his website. I haven't read it yet but I heard it's excellent.

RIGHTS VERSIONS COMPARISONS For older versions of the book, scroll down to the bottom. You can also find PDF and Mobile Reader versions of the book there. For rights explanations, read on. RIGHTS I am releasing each draft of WARBREAKER under a Creative Commons non-commercial, non-derivative work ...
Can confirm that anything by Brandon Sanderson is good. I need to reread Stormlight Archives again before reading the fifth book
Tbh my fav thing about Mistborn is the magic system and the world building, the two things Brandon excel at
I just noticed there was a books section! Can I see some shelfies? I've got 7 bookcases, but this one is my favorite.
My bookshelf lol
I'm kind of in the middle of moving so mine are all packed away ๐ญ but I have two bookshelves and a lot of digital books since they're easier on the go
The Stormlight Archives are the goal I'm reading towards lol
I am rereading the xanth series by piers anthony...I really like the puns
I've not heard of that but who doesn't love puns?
The xanth series is set in a world where everyone has a magical talent of some nature and the world around them is full of creatures that due to their magical nature are pretty...unorthodox. like.. a Catapult is a big cat that throws things. A lady slipper plant, grows women's shoes. An infantry is a tree with nuts that are shaped like babies who tend to be aggressive and war like. To elaborate on the kinds of puns
He started writing it in the 70s and theres like 40 something books in the series so I am pretty sure a lot of them are pretty cheap to get or listed free in places ๐ I am waiting for his majestys dragon to arrive in the mail to ready that next
Those are hilarious and clever ๐
I couldn't get through the Xanth books, Every other sentence ending with a "!" just really got on my nerves.
Oof
His writing style does change over the years too and tend to slip between fantasy and sci fi a bit much...but I still like them. What are you reading?
Currently I'm rereading the third book in Orson Scott Card's Alvin Maker series, and I've started over for the Nth time with Terry Pratchett's Color of Magic
Ooo I just read turtle recall not to long ago.. I love pratchett
I love Orson Scott Card's writing, but he's a pretty terrible human so I don't read anymore
But the Alvin Maker series is good. I can't wait for him to die so I can enjoy his books again, and that's a fact.
The maker series is the only of his work I really cared for. I agree with you though, as a person, he's not so great.
My husband is Pratchett obsessed. I've read Mort, and I'd like to start with The Colour of Magic and all that, just haven't had a chance to. But I loved Mort a LOT so
I love Pratchett. I think the world would be a better place if more people read his books.
...I am on the fence about that kind of thing...I can appreciate a story even if the person that wrote it is terrible...and if you hold people that lived 100 years ago to modern standards all of them are horrible.. but if we delete everything in media that was inspired by them then there's not a lot of art to enjoy...so how far do you take it?
I take it as... If the person can benefit from my purchasing their art today, I don't buy it: see, JK Rowling, Orson Scott Card
I think the answer to that is personal and by artist. OSC I can kind of turn a bit of a blind eye and still enjoy some of his work, but I've given away all my Marion Zimmer Bradley books, I can't read them without feeling sick now.
But like, if that person is dead? If they, as a person, will not be benefiting from my purchases or enjoyment of their art? I don't mind paying for or enjoying it for what it is.
I dunno perhaps once something is in the public domain so you're not supported monetarily modern jerks? But while I think Rowling is a trash fire person Harry Potter still has a place in my heart away from her.
Oh. Absolutely. Harry Potter as an entity is still good and the fandom is good and the things fans come up with are good
And I will continue to support fan-made things
But I won't buy anything from her or WB or support any official products
it's that simple.
What did MZB do?
MZB's daughter has set up that all her books money goes to victims of abuse, but I still just can't read it.
Like I see both sides I don't want to give jk Rowling money and am not interested in any new Harry Potter bleeding "new" works that leech but... people act like you can't still hold that story dear
Terry Pratchett is on my to-read list too
Ongoing sexual abuse of children. It didn't come out until after her death.
Going back after knowing and noticing how many sex scenes she had in her books of young people, it becomes very disturbing.
You really can't go wrong with any of his books.
I really want to check out his works soon!
Pratchett was just a really good person, and his anger really comes out in a lot of his books, especially the later ones after he was diagnosed. He has a way of saying something really important, but in a funny way, so you get the message but it's not quite so bitter.
What's everyone's favorite author or series?
Terry Pratchett's disc world... and Neil Gaiman but they're like peanut butter and jelly
Tamora Pierce, The Magic Circle books, and the later Tortall things.
I've never read Neil Gaiman but I loved Good Omens!
Tamora Pierce has always been on my radar but I've never picked up a book of hers.
If you like Pratchett's work they did a lot of collaboration together and have a similar tone to their writing. I reccomend stardust!
Ohhhh I'll have to check them both out.
Pratchett is at the top of my list, but there are so many seriously good books out there. Katherine Arden's Winter Witch trilogy is fantastic. Naomi Novak's Spinning Silver and Uprooted were both great. I love Gregory Maguire, and I just got around to reading his Egg and Spoon, highly recommended if you like Baba Yaga stories. Let's see....Anything Gaiman, Stephen King (especially the Dark Tower series), Joe Hill's Locke and Key graphic novels are amazing. Jane Lindskold's Firekeeper series is great. I love Anne McCaffrey, Ursula le Guin, Roger Zelazney's Chronicles of Amber got me through high school. I'm sure I've both forgotten someone and spelled everything incorrectly.
I havent gotten to read uprooted yet is it any good?
Stephen King's Dark Tower series is fantastic! Are the Lock and Keys graphic novels similar to the television adaptation? I read so much in high school but find myself watching more tv these days.
I thought it was very good.
Locke and Key graphic novels are very much darker than the show, but I still really enjoyed the show. They left out one of my very favorite scenes, but I think the visuals might have been difficult/expensive to pull off, so I understand.
Also, Seanan McGuire writes wonderful urban fantasy; I adore her October Daye series
Charles de lint is another great one if you like urban fantasy.
I thought it was pretty great. Maybe not as good as Spinning Silver, but I still really enjoyed it. She also came out with A Deadly Education last year that was a pretty fun read. [
Too Manyโข๏ธ
I LOOOOVE Seanan McGuire and her pseudonym, Mira Grant
Hands down my favorite author
I like historical and high fantasy but so often it's just depressing or just full of triggers... I was reccomended game of thrones...so much rape something with outlander... then there's too many that are an excuse for like bad furry porn.
I had to wade through Game of Thrones when I first started it, and then I put it down and said "nope" when I tried for a second run. Too many characters I don't care for.
Game of Thrones was a tough one for me. Too many people with too many different names, houses, symbols, I couldn't keep anything straight.
I tried GoT books but I couldn't get into them. Nothing really grabbed me.
I want to read stuff like the first time I read peter pan or lord of the rings and got the action and adventure the swashbuckling of treasure island etc... the lands and creatures and it doesn't have to be about a rape murder fest... it seems like there aren't a lot of stories like that getting written anymore
You can try Brian Jacques's Redwall series. Mice and hares and badgers on adventure.
The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin is next on my list after Sanderson's Stormlight Archives.
What's that series like?
I probably own the most Mercedes Lackey novels. I got really into the Valdemar series.
NK Jemisen is also a good writer. Her stories can get a bit confusing, but they're good.
C.S Friedman's Coldfire trilogy is really good, anything by Anne Bishop, The Deed of Paksenarrion which is an omnibus by Elizabeth Moon is... FANTASTIC low fantasy. Rachel Aaron/Rachel Bach is a fantastic writer., with her Legend of Eli Monpress being fantastic fiction and her Paradox series awesome sci-fi. Stant Litore is a little-known but "local to me" author out of Colorado who has done the Zombie Bible, which reimagines bible stories with zombies in them; I'm not remotely religious but they are among my favorite books. He also does really fantastic sci fi with his Ansible series, and all of his books are great.
I know I've had some Mercedes Lackey books, but I can't for the life of me think of one right now. I remember being drawn to her books because her covers were always so beautiful
I've only read the first novel in the series preceding the Stormlight Archives, but Mistborn is fantastic. It's about a ragtag team of thieves plotting to overthrow a dictator using one of the most unique magic systems I've ever read.
Ooo that sounds good...
I was a bit worries about that looking at it.
It depends on where you start. I got lost only a little bit, but she pulled it all together at the end and her stuff is amazing โค๏ธ
I am writing these down and making a book list.. I tried googling books on good reads to find ones that aren't depressing and they reccomended the fault in our stars by john green
I wish I could loan ebooks ๐ฌ
Which while a good book is definitely depressing
Ive started putting books in my amazon wish list, it emails me when they go on sale. I think I've got like 20 books in there right now. ๐
That's such a good idea!
Same
Joseph Brassey is also fantastic. The Book of Deacon series by Joseph Lallo was really good, Scott Lynch's Gentleman Bastards is a wonderful series...
I read a lot
stop adding to my to read list plz ๐
I set my goodreads goal to 50 a year, and I usually make it to about 55 - 60, but damn I had a hard time reaching my goal last year. And I've only finished 3 books so far this year.
Every time I go on GoodReads now it passive aggressively lets me know how many books behind my goal I'm at
๐
Last year being 2020? That wasn't a normal year tbf
Yeah, I read a lot in 2019, total being almost 120 books but I kinda stopped reading altogether in 2020. Just started reading again earlier this year, managed to read LotR, The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon and is currently reading The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin
I will probably read Ancillary Justice next
I read a lot in like, 2017/2018 when i had public transport commutes and read on my phone, but now i can walk to work and podcasts have gone way up
Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator who defied the heavens, and surpassed all limits.
Unfortunately for him, he died, and now Iโm stuck here. Arrogant young masters? Heavenly tribulations? Cultivating for days on end, then getting into life or death battles?
Yeah, no thanks. I'm getting out of here.
In which a transmigrator decides that the only w...
a story about someone who reincarnates as a chicken?
@glass atlas a story where a guy reincarnates wakes up in a xianxia and goes "nope", subverting the genre.
A novel where the guy walks around going, โyou just called me a Chicken!!??!! Youโve given me no face. We fight to the death.โ
@glass atlas he runs away from from the xianxia tropes, but also has a pet chicken later on
it funny a bit and has nice bits of action and slice of life
Has anyone else read the ACOTAR series (a Court of Thorns and Roses)? the new book just came out o:
Yessss. I was going to get it today but the weather messed with my plans
I have not... Is it really as good as everyone says?
omgg let me know pls my friend ordered hers but she got the physical copy and it's not coming in until next week for her
YES omg, the first book hooked me in, but not quite as well as the second book. The author does a really REALLY good job showing readers what a healthy vs unhealthy relationship looks like.
Hmm darnit all... I suppose I need to stick it on my list... I was an avid reader when I was young but now I can't barely sit through a book which is so disappointing because I do love reading so much. (Although I can read huge amounts of fanfiction... It's very confusing)
The author also tackles harder topics like trauma, depression, and goes to very dark places but still writes a very realistic outcomes for their characters
That honestly sounds really good. I struggle with depression so hopefully a good representation of it is always nice to see
i followed a booktuber who reads the series lol. it's entertaining to watch her rant about it. (talking about ACOTAR)
Hopefully I'll get it before then and let you know!
Acotar is so so
I enjoyed it when i read it but looking back its not overly great imo. I tend to find its dragged out:sweat_smile:
^you aren't alone, i find it meh as well
Not shitting on you if you enjoyed it though
oh it dragged me from the depths of my hole too. But I do agree with @dapper moat Im not sure if you're referring to the first book. But the first one was not my wholly my cup of tea. I didn't actually get sucked into it fully until halfway through the second book
Just lots of sex
Lots of stuff that is rushed too:joy:
Lol
sex that causes earthquakes.
I forgot that
i mean that sounds like fun ngl
๐
Wait really? ๐
yes really ^
The kingdoms are gorgeous and i would love them to be real places to visit but ehhhhhh
it's got nsfw parts in it, but I wasn't in it for the sex xD
their love is so goddamn powerful that it causes disasters.
^ it is YA LOL
nothing wrong with it, it just. goddamn.
Lol I mean doesn't sound terrible
If you need a pick me up and a laugh i cannot reccomend the house in the ceruclean sea enough
I have a friend who's obsessed with that series. Is it good?
I was in tears laughing the other night
the court of thorns and roses one
you'll just have to give it a go. I like ACOTAR more than the author's other series
I enjoyed it~ Im reading the newest book rn
It depends on what you enjoy
LOL
just know that the first book in ACOTAR is a very very very loose retelling of beauty and the beast
I think I have cerulean sea on my wish list -checking-
Love me some beauty and the beast retellings though....
Even if it's a loose retelling
yeah, dont get too attached to the first male lead tho.
๐คฃ
๐ Talia kills me
But the "only if you asked" makes it so much better
Yeah it is!
yeh I've got a sample of it, that I haven't ready yet o:
I'll put it on my good reads~
Lol
I love that the adults are 40 ish and not 20s๐
Has anyone read the mysterious Benedict society? From a little bit I've seen about the house in the cerulean sea it sounds like it might be as enjoyable as the mysterious Benedict society.
Ooo i havent
I haven't read the house in the cerulean sea but from the little posts about Talia she seems to have a similar feel to Constance. And I have always had a good laugh in the mysterious Benedict society. It's one of my favorite books and always been a go to for road trips
i'll give it a lookie n.n
Constance is definitely one of my favorite characters lol if Talia is anything like her I'm sure I would enjoy the house in the cerulean sea
Yep!
woot! added to good reads~
๐
I'll add it to mine too ๐
The kids at first are like wow okay chill
But they grow on you  :purple_heart:
Incase anyone wants some interesting biographys "the girl who beat isis" is an amazing story, it's not too graphic but of course there are still very heavy and upsetting topics. In same light 'in order to live' is a great book about a girl who escapes north korea, the girl who wrote it has a YouTube channel now and uploads regularly about her old life in North Korea. If any one has any other good biography books like this please @ me! ๐
The Red Rising series by Pierce Brown is pretty good if you like futuristic sci-fi adventure type stuff.
Does anyone have good book recommendations for learning about Indonesian culture and lore?
maybe you can read Indonesia, Etc by Elizabeth Pisani, as an Indonesian myself, I find Pisani's perspective about my country are quite refreshing.
Thank you. It's a culture I am not very familiar with and would like to know more about. If you feel like it's a good starting point for your culture, that's even more reassuring
yes, just read the book, actually, my lecturer told us to read this book to see the perspective of foreigners about Indonesia, then I found a much better understanding of the diversity, ect.
๐ One in 30 of the people on this planet is Indonesian
270.6 million.... what the heck.
The Guild Codex series by Annette Marie is three (soon to be four) series all following different characters while they navigate different aspects of the same insane world of modern day magic!
You can follow human Tori as she becomes a bartender for a local Guild :tropical_drink:
You can follow Robin as she becomes an unplanned Demon Contractor :smiling_imp:
You can follow Kit as he goes from criminal to Special Agent :police_officer:
And you can follow The Crystal Druid as he navigates the human and Fae world! :gem:
I would love to hear what everyone is reading currently book wise!
Also! I have a goodreads account if anyone wants to be friends on there!
Currently, I'm reading The Apprentice by Tess Gerritsen, love her works
Previously, and highly recommended, I read Pachinko by Min Jee Lee
The house in the cerulean sea
I'm almost finished it so im dragging tge ending out
Its so good
I'm rereading the Harry Potter series and just finished a non-fic called Crazy Love
I love to read anything and everything by colleen houck ๐๐
Whatever you do, donโt read My Immortal (Unless you really want to get a good laugh out of it)
Oh nooo I was there when it came out, never ๐คฃ๐คฃ
I tend to only read Hermione centric anyways, usually crossovers ๐คทโโ๏ธ๐คฃ
Nice nice
I'm currently reading Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust
it's YA fantasy about a girl who was cursed to have poisonous skin so she can never touch anyone
Iโm currently reading the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher (on Book 6 right now) and a YA book called the Henna Wars!
i found my own copy of princess bride. Granted, it's the abridged version, but still. Buttercup is a whole mood; "who needs boys when horses love me?"
I am currently reading the shadow and bone series cause its going to be made into a tv show soon
That sounds interesting
i'm having a good time with it!
Have you read the Six of Crows duology? I highly recommend that one if you havenโt!
Anyone a fan of Adam Silvera?
he wrote "they both die at the end", right? my friend loves that book
He did!!! I love how he writes tragic but beautiful books
i have yet to read it unfortunately ๐ โ i've heard a lot of good things tho
i just got Stormsong which is the sequel to Witchmark which was a lot of fun
and most recently i've read Blackfish City which also had some real good things i liked
last year i read The Black Tides of Heaven which, was real close to home in terms of setting and the scene where the protagonist tries pronouns ;-;
Guys i want to buy my friend a book but i cant find anything ๐
what do they like?
Uh lemme find the list she gave to her siblings
Uh i cant find it
But she enjoys fantasy (dark), lgbtq
I was going to grab her cemetery boys but i know she asked her siblings for it
Gideon the Ninth is about lesbian necromancers in space
Ooooooooo
Perfectโค๏ธ
Its on the list ๐ฉ i need to know what her siblings got her from the list
VE Schwab has some books that are also fun. A Darker Shade of Magic has portal fantasy stuff i like
Witchmark is some fantasy politics & romance
I'll have a look tyy
i really like ann leckie's scifi things a lot, but i haven't read her fantasy book, The Raven Tower, yet
has anyone read carry on by rainbow rowell?
It's on my to read list
We Set the Dark on Fire is about a girl who has to choose between the future she worked her entire life for and a revolution and is also gay
@bronze moth Carry On by Rainbow Rowell is like gay Harry Potter, only it's not about the big epic fights against evil it's about all the moments in between with your friends. And the only way it's like HP is that it's got magic and they've been to magic school. So really not like HP but I think it was inspired by. Rainbow Rowell is great at characters
It's the first book in I believe going to be a trilogy. The second book is out and the third is coming out this year
it's my favourite book, the sequel is really good as well
It's great
yeah i'm planning on preordering the third one
omg yes, it's what made me buy carry on lol
Me too lol
I have
Its good
Carry On is great! Also, Red White and Royal Blue is amazing too!
i've been meaning to check out red white and royal blue
red white and royal blue is so wholesome omg
Definitely check it out
Sameee ๐
I'll be free thisnweekend, so is there any fantasy book recommendation for me?
I heard Shadow and Bone is good
yes omg!!! shadow & bone is AMAZING
six of crows (the author's other series) is also incredible
Have you ever read the beyonderโs trilogy by Brandon Mull? Iโd say thatโs probably my favorite fantasy series
The Fallen series by Lauren Kate is 5 books and really good. fantasy romance series
The Dresden Files - I love it.
Little Brother by Cory Doctorow is also another good stand alone one. not really fantasy but it was one of the rare books not in fantasy that grabbed me and hooked him.
If you're interested in urban fantasy Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series is great
I also recommend the Modern Magick Series by Charlotte English, free to read online on modern-magick.net
(you could also support her by buying ebooks)

Hello books lover friends, I'm new here โค๏ธ I saw your conversation and I'm also a fan of Shadow and bones ! I'm currently reading six of crows too ๐
Anyone read "The Mirror Visitor" here ? It's a fantasy book written by a French author and I absolutely recommend it !
I haven't even heard it o.o
I'm new here as well. ^-^
I guess the book isn't well known outside of France but if you like fantasy book, check this hidden gem :p
I'll have to search it later ooo
The Mirror Visitor is probably one of my favorite books (among many, of course). It's not... typical feeling, if you're used to Anne McCaffrey or Tamora Pierce, but it is definitely worth a read. I got it on sale on audible first, then promptly got it on kindle so I could actually read it, then got a hard copy to loan out, a step which most books don't make it to.
I have to scroll up to check the recs lol
But thanks! Now I have a list of books to check out.
Are most of the books discussed here fantasy? not that I object, just curious.
Hmmm good idea
like a google doc everyone can edit for recs?
I believe (and mods or anyone else please correct me if I'm wrong) this channel is for any kind of books people want to talk about? Fantasy has just been what they've discussed the most so far.
Yeah, it's just literally books/literature. I think most people here just enjoy a lot of fantasy, but there's been discussions about other stuff, and also science fiction, etc.
Christelle Dabos?
So feel free to discuss whatever!
I only read science fiction and fantasy, because those are my favorite genres. But Iโve been an active reader for about 45 years, so some of my favorites are less well known.
Just joined this discord and SO glad to see Shadow and Bone has made an appearance here!
SFF reader here โบ๏ธ ๐
Yes ! So happy to see other people who know her ๐
I totally second this! I actually stopped reading for a while and The Mirror Visitor is the book that got me back reading again, it just has something so special
Same here I mostly read SF/Fantasy but I also read other genres so if anyone needs a recommendation feel free to ask!
i have six of crows on audible and i find it so hard to ceep up cass they change the reader for every person ๐ค do anyone else have this problem?๐
@misty goblet Actually, I had never heard of her, but I wanted to make sure I was looking at the correct author in my eBookstore/Goodreads. Very impressive scores, absolutely worth giving it a try.
Since titles canโt be copyrighted, I try to be careful about making sure that I have the right book. Even more important with music. I think I have at least 100 songs that have the same title as some other song in my library.
I keep forgetting to look up that Indonesian culture book someone recommended a week or so ago
Indonesia etc.
Yeah i was thinking google doc
@dapper moat Are you going to set that up, or would you like me to?
You're more than welcome to๐
Oooh would love to see the doc w/ book recs!!
I'm currently reading Chaos Walking (hoping to finish before the movie is out). Anyone read that series?
This is pretty bare so far: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14EuUZYfs0U1doXg6ArzQW9a0r1IU6HRnOykQT7d218w/edit
Welcome
Book Recommendations by Coral Island fans, for Coral Island fans
We will try to keep this up to date with any books suggested in the Discord channel, but if we miss something, please feel free to private message or @ one of the editors.
I am not going to allow blanket editing permissions...
I like it!
Iโve gone back about two weeks. If someone feels like going back further or double checking to see what I missed, that would be helpful.
a darker shade of magic is in a series and also, along with six of crows, LGBT
or, give me a couple hours to get home and i'll request edit access
yeah! I just finished book two!
what are your thoughts on it so far?
Not too far into it yet but the idea of hearing each otherโs thoughts is wild. Can be incredibly useful and troublesome. Makes me wish I could hear my dogs thought ๐
Iโm excited for be movie though! I think Tom Holland will do great!
yeah I saw a promo and its really interesting how they're doing the 'hear the thoughts' thing
oh a darker shade of magic is on my list, I can't wait to read it ! I'm finishing "an ember in the ashes" series first and then I'll read a darker shade of magic ^-^
and thanks dmclean for the google doc ! I'll think of other recommendations but I just have so many books I love haha
I'll pin the gdoc for the recs
I wanted to add all of my 5 star books, but that seemed a bit self serving. Fortunately, someone else already recommended several of them.
Also, should I add all the books in each series? So far Iโve only added book 1, figuring that, with the Goodreads link, people can look up the rest.
There are two books on my Goodreads list with the same title. Murder of Crows
For those of you who like Six of Crows or A Darker Shade of Magic, have you read The Raven Cycle? ๐
THE RAVEN CYCLE AAAA
have you also read Call Down the Hawk??
Ah, i have read it. [wiggles hand] about my lack of interest in both private schools and boys
yknow, thats fair lmao
Is that a recommendation? Iโm trying to capture them in the Google doc.
I loved the Grisha books, Shade of Magic series, and The Raven Cycle! But I haven't read King of Scars yet for the Grisha books, or Call Down the Hawk for TRC
please give me edit or commenting access
I changed the blanket permission to comment. Iโll be happy to add people as editors, if they ask for it through the document.
I would definitely recommend it! Along with The Scorpio Races and The Guinevere Deception!
Call Down the Hawk moved Declan from one of my least favorite characters to one of my favorites lmao ๐ ๐ฆ
Added
Not yet heh
๐
Declan is a babe tho
Wait
No
My brain rn
๐
We stand the dreaming babes ๐
Oh lord no
๐คฃ
i love chainsaw and want her myself
Isn't there a sequel coming out for it?
Man i need to get my reading mood on
A sequel to Call Down the Hawk? Yea it's coming out in May I think
it's called Mister Impossible ๐
Thatโs a good chat question: what new book(s) are people waiting for this year?
Is it too much to hope that Winds of Winter, Doors of Stone, and Thorn of Emberlain get released this year? lol
Ghost Story taught me not to anticipate book unless they were available for pre-order.
But it also contained one of my all-time favorite pieces of writing, so I forgave Jim Butcher for the delay after ending the previous book with an ugly cliffhanger.
This reminds me of The Name of the Wind lol. I got so excited waiting for its rumored sequel, but the wait was too long I ended up forgetting until last year when my sister told me about it
Yeah... Every once in a while I remember those exist and wonder if we'll ever get the last one.
oh! Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao
xiran is the woman who's been doing some analysis of the live action mulan, and later, other chinese historical/cultural videos! and she's writing a book about polyamorous mecha pilots, that i Am Here For
oooh has that come out?
fall 2021!
!! super exciting
wait, oh my god, aristotle and dante dive into the waters of the world is also coming out this year
I'm pretty sure the sequel or third book from Rothfuss is already out or coming out. I forgot about the sequel too, but now I just want to re-read Name of the Wind and then keep going.
The first 2 are out, but as far as I'm aware the 3rd (and supposedly last) is just out there in the aether waiting to be finished.
Rothfuss is worse than GRRM when it comes to actually getting stories done 8p
Is there supposed to be a sequel after Wise Man's Fear?
If that's the case then dang it's been 10 years
Goodreads lists a book titled The Doors of Stone
Im excited for Under the Whispering Door
I have three books on pre-order: Chaos on Catnet (YA, LGBTQ, sf), What Abigail Did That Summer (modern fantasy), and The Last Graduate (YA modern fantasy)
So many books so little motivation ๐ฉ
@shut vale moving here, ive only got a small collectiton so far
Very cool!
ive got a Better Homes cookbook (lacking my fav recipe from the book i grew up with, unfortunately), the Unofficial Legend of Zelda cookbook, the Spice Cookbook (it has a map with all the places spices are uh, either natively found or cultivated, uncertain) and the Encyclopedia of Cookery
I have basically a five shelf bookcase filled with cookbooks
The far left?those aren't cookbooks but they're mark twain printed in the 20s
the green one next to them, too
I'm going to be on the hunt for more of them though but yeah they're awesome
Oh yes that one is neat!!
It's actually a marketing guide from the late 1800s I believe
whoa
whoa
Also got a vincent price cookbook too
nice !!
if you don't have it, i do highly recommend the spice cookbook. it's pretty and practical
That one o think I do
But I mostly go after everything pre 1960s
1935
And what I love about these are the little newspaper clippings too
By Avanelle Day, 1964?
yeah!
i love the illustrations in it. and the recipes are great too
we've made the beef ragout and holy shit
I'll have to check my collection for it and look out for it I just love the ancients so much
there's definitely something to having a Really Olld cookbook
i think im gonna like, keep an eye out for more nerdy ones
though a coworker once said he has a good viking cookbook which, idk what's in one of those but i wanna find out
Nice!
Geeky fact โvikingโ was originally a verb.
I'm on the lookout for prohabition era cocktail ones now
not surprised, it does end in -ing
oh man those sound like fun
Yeah!!
One cookbook I have isn't just food recipes either like
There's how to make your own booze and stuff in there
Actually two are like that
whoa
Yeah!!
ive made yogurt before (well, more yogurt) but never tried booze
probably won't, either. i dislike the taste of alcohol
I wouldn't even though I like it, it's more fascinating history lessons than anything
Added The Spice Cookbook to the recommendation list
Of you like subscription plans there's one on Etsy that's awesome
I got it for Christmas, but I plan on getting it again when it runs out
https://www.etsy.com/listing/204240205/vintage-monthly-cookbook-club-6-month it's an awesome one but yeah I love ones with little illistrations
A cookbook in your mail box once a month for six months! Everyone loves getting a surprise in the mail! Now, you can surprise yourself or someone you care about with a subscription to our Vintage Monthly Cookbook Club. Once a month for 6 months you will receive one vintage cookbook, printed between
This Chinese cookbook has a bunch of them it was written by nuns just after wwii
pics?
Or in the 60s recounting memories and such with the recipes it's a good little book
this sounds incredible
I have to find it first!!
also that subscription service sounds... very tempting
$100 for 6 books aint a bad deal, either
Oh and some of them are on the older side too but
Is one I got fromr them
They're all in good condition
ooh, classy
oh, ,lookin at the listing actually reminded me of a fifth cookbook in my shelf
the dr seuss cookbook
it's like, 80% presentation and simple mixed drinks for kids
but it's all from the seuss books
I got another I put somewhere but
Those are all from them
They wrap all their books in an old vintage map too
Found the Chinese cookbook!
oh i love that cover!
ooh, that's helpful!
awwwww the cow is crying from onion oils
Last one sorry for the spam but just the forward it's a first edition, 1956 too it's just different xD
Correction that's the last one
Once I get things cleaned up I'll share a picture of the bookshelf I honestly want to get a different style one that's lower but hey xS eventually
i need to buy a bookshelf i can wall-mount. my current storage is rapidly becoming insufficient
I have the one bookcase and then two wall mounted 8 foot long book shelves
But hose are less cookbooks more normal reading books and knickknacks
my shelving will be primarily for robots tbh
i have a Sizable transformers collection and plans to buy more
Oh nice
Reminds me of the German cookbook we have at my moms from right before WW1
Ooooo
My best friend would love this, but she would kill me if I did this for her birthday
Heck I forgot to turn off the ping, if you care about that, I apologize
its okay! xD
i got my computer muted anyways but they have lesser months too if i remember right!
Anyone here read a decent amount of manga? I want opinions on a couple of series
I just recently read the time travelers wife and man is it good
The cover is beautiful
I read manga. Used to, but not that often these days. What titles are you talking about?
Black clover and twin star exorcist
Some guy is selling them and if heโs willing to do a trade, Iโve got a series Iโm wanting to replace since itโs honestly not going to ever be reread
I just want to know if either or both are worthwhile
i like black clover, read it at mangaplus
i've used to read twin star exorcist but dropped it, i forget why
but i love the author previous works, binbogami
It honestly depends on your preference. If you're into typical shounen jump series, then Black Clover is definitely for you
Twin Star Exorcist started great but it kinda dragged later on. The world building id pretty goof though
Iโm just trying to figure out if the trade is fair in a way
Because volume wise heโs be getting more
But shojo for shounen is, probably only worth it to the other person if the like it
Oh! The guy does trade
ooh
i'm glad the trade is working out for you, i haven't read black clover or much of twin star exorcist
Oh I just happened to miss it in the sale description
I have no idea if the guy would take them
ohhh welp, good luck
Added to list (see pinned messages)
Anyone tried the Powder Mage series by Brian McClellan? Working through his sequel series now, havent been as hooked on a series in some time.
Haven't heard of it, what is it about?
Basically takes place in a nation at a time of political upheaval and the resulting conflicts. Its gunpowder fantasy and follows many of the military figures and others through events triggered at the start. The tech of the time is Napoleonic, and many effects of industry are being felt and adding to the changing circumstances of the world. Among the magic exist a group called Powder mages who can use gunpowder to fuel various abilities.
The Powder Mage trilogy is a series of epic fantasy novels written by American author Brian McClellan. It consists of the novels Promise of Blood (2013), The Crimson Campaign (2014) and The Autumn Republic (2015). In 2014, Promise of Blood received the Morningstar Award for Best Fantasy Newcomer. Several short stories and novellas set in the wor...
Yea, Sanderson has been an influence for him, he attended some of his writing classes when he was in school.
Oh that's really cool! Definitely will check it out when I got the time then :3c

You're a diamonddd
I'm qaiting for my friend to tell me what books she got from her family to then order er one
Her*
Maria V Snyder, the YA author also teaches writing, at the university my daughter graduated from.
Ahhh gyo
Yessss Junji Ito
And yeah, Gyo is the one with the mechanical fish
I also recommend Tomie
Thatโs such a read
I was actually just looking at manga of indigo (Canadaโs big chain) and that sale was just there and it was really funny to me
Tomie was also Junji Itoโs first piece of work, if I recall
If you ever read that you will see how his art has changed throughout it
Currently Iโve got my eye set on some older rare(ish) manga
Hetalia and the first volume of the original Akira print
Only reason I have my eye on them is because of that
If they do trades I might be able to get away with getting them rather cheap
Because I have some volumes of jojo that are technically duplicates
Somehow my aunt managed to have an easier time finding the paper back ones (which have been out of stock for years) then she did the hardcover books sold currently
So the paperback ones are sort of rare, might be able to trade for that volume of akira
Hetalia is considered as rare now?
The last time I followed up Hetalia is when Vietnam made its appearance
I give away some manga I don't read them anymore. I wonder if people will take them
give it to me
Well the manga is out of print and doesnโt even exist in Canadaโs largest chain book store, so it definitely is considered rare from everything I know
I know I have no way of getting it, but Iโd be curious to see what you have
There arenโt any manga on the list yet.
I'm just waiting for the latest chapter of AOT rn...
I donโt recognize that acronym, so I canโt add it to the recommendation list.
That should be Attack on Titan
i wouldn't recommend AOT without a Lot of caveats about the gore and the nationalism
Think that depends on who you ask? I've seen quite a few jewish people say that it's not
i mean, you can find a member of any group with an opinion that differs. that the author decided to include parallels to anti-semitic conspiracy theories and pulls characters and imagery from WWII is something that's fraught at best.
What I mean is majority of Jewish people I've seen who've actually read it are good with it, most of the people who have a problem with it aren't Jewish
Given that the right in Japan is pretty different from the right here, I'm calling Occam's razor on that one
i mean, that's your experience with a specific group of jewish people and their opinions of the show shouldn't be used to discredit everyone else's.
and 2, what? where are you from??
From the US, in the midwest. And fair, what's comfortable for one person isn't for another
i'm on the other side of the world from you
Ahh yeah makes sense
this isn't something that i understand, japan participated in WWII. i don't know what you're arguing here
I'm referring to the anti semetic part, there's not many jewish people in japan
Max is .0002% of the population
ah, hm. given that the show makes specific comparisons to that group of characters and jewish people, i'd say that "not knowing" is not a very good justification
Some of the things have been tools of oppressors throughout time, antisemitism is one of the most recent and most visible ones. Also, it's important to remember that the Jewish compared group are the protagonists, for the most part.
Do agree that you have to be careful on recommendending this series though, it reaaaallly isn't for everyone
i wouldn't call antisemitism "recent" and there's some other stuff with what the author's said on twitter (about koreans), but yeah. i'd describe the show as being "fraught at best" in terms of messages.
I mean for recent antisemitism stuff, like ww2 and recent news events, it's more on people's minds than other forms of opression. And that private twitter hasn't been proven to be the author's and he's said nothing on his public, so up in the air bout that
Honestly I like the series cause how it handles morality, and how it writes characters on all sides of the conflict. It's all kinds of people
i tend to be most critical of shows like that because if they're not careful, it's very easy for them to be sort of, victim-blamey
Yeah unfortunately, it's a pretty delicate matter
I like how aot does it though, personally, understand how it rubs people the wrong way though
Super excited to see a books section on here. I have been reading Heather Cox Richardsons histories revolving around the Civil War era reconstruction and mistreatment of the original people and POC. But she mentioned in passing the other day two books written in 1912 and 1915 about day to day life of an orphanage asylum. Sounds dreadful right? No they are charming and inspirational. She had such a way of writing that I'm sad she passed young in childbirth. The wonderful books she could have published ๐ฆ
Ooh, I'll have to check those out! What's the titles?
@thin terrace Booktubers are a thing? can you reccomend one?
Anyone have a good English translation of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms?
Or can recommend one?
@shut dock That would have helped wouldn't it? The first was Daddy Long Legs. Basically a girl who was raised solely in the orphanage is sent to college and is tasked with writing a letter to her benefactor once a month. These are those letters. The second is the sequel where the original girl hires one of her college friends to take over the running of the dismal orphanage and upgrade it. It's called Dear Enemy and is a series of letters to various people from the new superintendant of the place.
Thanks much~
I second all the Seanan McGuire books, also The NewsFlesh series by her nom de plume Mira Grant (The only zombie books I have ever read). But for Time distortion/travel/epic space battles/ and a plot line you will never see coming, i have to recommend the series " A Soldiers Duty" by Jean Johnson. It follows the adventures of Ia, A 15 yo girl who sees the end of the universe...but also a way to save it. So it's five books worth of her attempts to manipulate time, space, people, into following the one path that will save everything.
Who knows that comic book dog man?
which one? i know theres a Dav Pilkey spinoff series about a dog, but other than that i got nothin
A Soldiers Duty was magnificent.
Added a bunch of stuff to the Google doc, but I could have missed something
Has anyone heard of Otherside Picnic by Iori Miyazawa? It's an LGBT japanese horror scifi novel about two college girls who discover another world called "the otherside" where beings that appear in japanese urban legends and creepypasta are real. It also has a manga.
I find this novel interesting because it made me wonder what if a hidden world where urban legends and creepypasta lived did exist? It's scary for sure. For example, if you know the slenderman, then slenderman would appear in that world.
I think that Heinleinโs novel The Number of the Beast had, as part of its premise, that out there in all of the many universes you could find every fictional universe ever written about. They travelled to Oz in one section.
My dad was a member of the International Wizard of Oz club and regularly attended their conferences. I have his collection of all the Baum books and most of the Thompson books plus some of the newer stuff.
This sounds SO up my alley, thank you for posting about it!
You're welcome! ๐
First manga on the list
๐
Hello ๐
I would like to recommend a couple books/manga (im not entirely sure what i need include so sorry if im missing something or say too much)
- Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuinston. The first book ive ever willingly reread. Its LGBT kind of young adult vibes I guess but the main characters are all college or older. Its about the son of rhe first women president in the US and is rivalry (and spoilers later romantic interest) with the grandson of the queen. Some sexual content and some homophobia in it and there might be a couple other concerns but thoss are off the top of my head. Filles with a ton of poc and lgbt
Side note: the author has hee second book, One Last Stop coming out soon with lesbians and I guess a subway or train? Iirc - No. 6 by Atsuko Asano a nine volume manga that is science fiction and I think its like utopia/dystopia? About a boy who lives in a "perfect" city or w/e meets another boy not from there and his world gets very changed and very complicated. This one is more serious and has some violence and blood depicted iirc and some bug related stuff if that something people do or do not cars for. It is also gay, however the focus is not really on that or any real romantic or romance aspects. Its only lightly touched on.
-Fruits Basket I cant remember the author but its also a manga. Cant remember the length but I think its a bit more popular so it might be Known by some already. Some references to abuse, physical, mental, and emotional. But mixed with a lot of nice-ness and my ultimate OTP
Hope these were ok, theyre mainly lgbt books as thats kind of the main thing ive been able to read lately...
Also sorry for the long message
No. 6 is really good, tho i definitely prefer the pacing of the Light Novel than the anime
since i'm noticing a lot of manga recs, i offer you vinland saga. i don't want to spoil too much but it's about vikings. the mc's dad is killed by a viking and so he decides to follow the viking to kill him so he can avenge hia dad. the character development is wonderful and the art is,, chefs kiss beautiful.
Late reply to a late reply but I recommend starting with withcindy! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6i_QSkT7pCQH1llVVGd6cA she's my fav booktuber I watched!
@celest yacht Feel free to recommend whatever you like. Everyone here is old enough to make informed choices as to what is or is not appropriate for them.
Red, White, and Royal Blue (which I saw my daughter gave 5 stars) No 6, and Vinland Saga added to the list.
i've heard RWRB is really good! ๐คฉ
RWRB is a very cute fun book!
@celest yacht and anyone else who enjoy manga i highly highly reccomend Shimanami Tasogare- Our Dreams at Dusk
Its an amazing story and has incredible art
Iโm compiling a Google doc list of any books recommended here. See the pinned message for the link.
Oh yeah, Our Dreams at Dusk is so good
additional note, LGBTQ+ themes, and the author is x gender iirc
Ohhh i didnt know about the x gender ๐ฅบ ๐ @toxic spoke
I'm getting back into my Tamora Pierce obsession lately and I'm rereading some of my favorites; I highly recommend the Beka Cooper series, and the Trickster's Curse/Trickster's Queen duo ๐๐พ
I'm reading Sandry's book to my daughter right now
I love Tamora Pierce, though, I haven't liked her most recent books
Beka Cooper is on my top 5 all time favorite series
I've been trying to find the Circle of Magic books in local book stores,, somehow I only have book 2 in my collection ๐
I haven't read any of her recent stuff but I saw that one of them has a male lead and I was like ๐ฌ You lost me Tam...I'm sorry....
The ending of the third book was kind of disappointing but over all, definitely one of my top 5 too
I hate the ending and love it at the same time.... Also beka cooper is the most recent I have read of her stuff lol
the circle of magic books are my favorite
I love them so much
Will of the Empress is one of my favorite books
yeah, the most recent book that I read from her was a prequel to the Wild Mage series about Numair and I do not care about his story. Plus there were some parts about male puberty that I didn't want to read about lol
I enjoyed all of the Tamora Pierce books Iโve read, which is all but 3 or 4 books. Let me add a couple to the list.
@astral garnet added first book of Becka and first book of the Circle stories to the list. They can find the rest from there.
I doubt anyone is ever going to read it, but Iโll recommend les miserables for the list
Thereโs almost 17,000 people who have visited this server so far. No doubt someone out there would like it.
I guess thatโs true
Not to mention itโs a popular musical. Somebody will read it just because of that.
If this is the place for book recommendation then Watership Down is a delightful read. It's one of my all time favourites!
I would like to second watership down, one of the best books I've ever read!
The movie is heavily gory and possibly traumatizing to children though. do NOT pick either up thinking it's a cute bunny story
It's a fantastic book but like. Dark and serious as hell shrouded in "oh look it's about bunny rabbits"
The gore is really, really overstated in the movie though. The book doesn't go into bloody detail, so to speak
I just read The Circle and, if you can tolerate mild r/menwritingwomen-tomfoolery, it's really interesting and broadened my mind on information society, privacy, transparency and capitalism/corporatocracy.
Ooh, that's one for the reading list. Thanks for the suggestion!
I would call Watership Down like... YA fantasy levels of violent? It's definitely not a "cute bunny story", it's so good though. I was obsessed with it and with learning Lapin as a kid
Yeah, it's definitely one of those books that if animals dying is a hard pass for you, you shouldn't pick it up. But the world and mythology and culture built for the rabbits is so immersive that you can't help but get sucked right into the story.
Weirdly enough, I am usually one of those people - but in Watership Down I like the mythology and everything so much that I cope with it much better
I know what you mean, it's so absorbing!
i finished a good girl's guide to murder today !! 10/10 would recommend
Google doc updated
Going to recommend the Bone series by Jeff Smith
it's a down-to-earth fantasy graphic novel about three cousins who are run out of town for being charlatans and one of them finds friendship, adventure and a dragon
That was the first graphic novel series I ever read, it was absolutely wonderful
I'm like a day late, but I loved Les Miserables. Read everything except the 60 pages on the battle of waterloo that had all of 1 page relevant to the rest of the story...
Added to list. And by list, I mean the Google doc.
Agreed
Does anyone have any good fxf books? 18+ is okay but maybe dm them instead of putting them in here as it's a pg server unless the mods are okay with it with a warning
For us old squares, perhaps if we knew what that was, we could help you. A web search turned up nothing useful, though โfunny xylophone failโ amuses me.
Female with female haha
Welp I read too much fanfiction. ๐ฌ I immediately knew what that was ๐
I have a great mlp fxf fanfiction I adore but idk if you'd be into that or not.
Ah, that makes sense, though Iโd never seen that particular abbreviation before. The only thing that comes immediately to mind is a rather lovely YA science fiction novel Catfishing on CatNet, which is on the Google doc. There are several other books marked LGBT, but I havenโt read any of them.
Iโve only ever read one piece of fan fiction. I have read same amateur fiction in various genres, some of it excellent. Sturgeonโs Law.
Sure go ahead and link it and I'll try it out I suppose, and thanks dmclean!
Not Your Sidekick (superheroes), If I Tell You (high school drama), Ascension (spaceship crew), Provenance (scifi politics), Gideon the Ninth (space necromancers),
I'm can recommend Everything Leads to You by Nina LaCour! Don't ask me why, but 'soft' is the word I would use to discribe it.
the abyss surrounds us by emily skrutskie is a great book. itโs YA and itโs a dystopian future filled with pirates, sea monsters, and people who tame said sea monsters. the main character isnโt white for once and the wlw romance isnโt the central plot point. it also has a sequel
The link for the Google doc is pinned. Itโs the only pin in this channel.
Updated, though @toxic spoke if you could double check that I added the correct books?
Thanks you guys!
There is a webtoon I read a couple years back that I canโt quite remember the name of off the top of my head, but it was a pretty wholesome one. Iโll try and remember the name (I believe it was called Always Human)
Always Human is a precious webcomic, and I was very sad when it ended.
Always Human was really sweet!
Oooo just noticed there's a graphic novel sub-section in the doc.
I'm gonna recommend The Wicked + The Divine by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wicked_%2B_The_Divine It's an urban fantasy about pop idols who are also deities wrapped up in a murder mystery. Just be forwarned that it talks a lot about heavy stuff, but the cast is LGBTQ+ and the pay off is fantastic!
@thin terrace It seems like there are a fair number of manga people, so it felt appropriate to have a separate section.
Having finished the Princess Bride book (finally) I have to say uh... the movie is better. 8p
I just got randomly nostalgic and remembered a book series I had when I was a kid
I had to go look it up and was not expecting to see this article
This is a late response but for the fxf books I can think of two manga, one is a really short one called, iirc, i married my best friend to shut up my parents and I'm not sure who its by, and another im not sure the author titled Girlfriends that i only read the first of but it was good. And im sure I know some novels but the first one I think of is a book based on a podcast called Alice Isn't Dead. Both are the same name and the book by Joseph Fink. However while it's good anf id recommend it regardless idk if its quite whats being looked for as romance isnt the main focus. Its a kind of modern sci-fi or fantasy? And about a truck driver looking for her wife and traveling through some very weird and usually unsettling places
Thank you!
alice isnt dead!!!
i loved that podcast o my gosh i didnt even realise it had a book
I Married My Best Friend To Shut My Parents Up by Kodama Naoko and Girl Friends by Milk Morinaga
So happy with all these suggestions thanks guys
if you'd like a few more for the fxf list I was reminded of a couple today: Ascension by Jacqueline Koyanagi (sci fi novel, narrator is a black women who is attracted to women) and Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant (horror mermaids. it's fantastic)
Also, This is How You Lose the Time War - not 100% sure it counts as neither main character is really human and their genders are probably best rendered outside the binary, but they both use she/her pronouns. It's epistolary sci-fi, with some beautiful use of language
heck yeah, ascension
Ascension was already on the list. Added everything else. @raw tendon is the current champ for โLongest Recommendation Titleโ but please do not take that as a challenge. ๐

My wife and I have an agreement - I only buy ebooks and she doesnโt complain about how much space they take up.
My ex and I had over 1000 books when we combined them and I still have probably around 350-400 give or take. There are not enough bookcases for them...
ooh yes! does anyone have any recommendations for graphic novels/comics made by small artists? preferably something physical!
i know most of the popular stuff but i want to support smaller creators
Do you like horror?
A friend of mine, John Lees, is a comic book writer, mostly of horror, and while it's not my bag, I do know that he's a fantastic writer
We moved 5 years ago, and I had already converted to ebooks. Not having to move 8 bookcases of books and media was tremendously helpful.
If you haven't read Digger I recommend it (http://diggercomic.com/) originally a webcomic (and still available that way) but you can buy physical books if you want them
i love horror! iโll check these both out :-)
btw, does anyone have a website recommendation for posting original fiction stories?
Fiction or Fanfiction?
wattpad?
DeviantArt kappa
are you a teen writer, or an adult?
You can also use ao3, archive of our own, they have tags for original works
I've posted a couple of original works there myself
@sour bramble
if you're looking for teen writing: https://www.readbrightly.com/6-great-websites-teen-writers/
i used figment when i was in high school and it looks like it's still functioning
if you're looking for adult writing sites, nanowrimo forums are still a good place but also lmao if you find anything let me know
sorry i haven't vetted any of these but this list looks promising

I just found a sealed edition of the game of thrones series for 85$ at a used bookstore.. I'm so conflicted if I should get it..
oh it's cheaper online
Omg lmao my husband already has the books on kindle but didn't tell me till now
You should sell if for progit.
Lol
People keep asking me why I havenโt read those, and honestly the donโt hold any great interest.
I've watched the first season and part of the second season and really liked it but I prefer books
Iโve never watched an adaptation that was as good as the book, and many that were just awful.
I think that How to Train Your Dragon is an example of an adaptation that is a work of art on its own
notably this is because of how many liberties and changes it took with the book it was based on (and i think i still prefer the book, but that's primarily for nostalgia reasons) but I do think it's possible to make really good art out of adaptations
they just... shouldn't be or attempt to be 1:1
I think Shadowhunters also makes a good case for being a better series than the books it's based off
So. The first season of GoT was pretty spot on, and the differences didn't bother me. And I was in the middle of re-reading the books for the third time when I watched it.
Every subsequent season got worse, and by season 3 I would stop watching after 15 minutes because I'd be mad at one more thing they changed. I re-watched the series a few years later around the time season 6 was airing... And I enjoyed it more, but still got irked. But Season 8 was an actual clusterfuck and now i pretend the entire show doesn't exist
I've read the first four books three times a piece though, and I really enjoy them. But they are DENSE
Okay! And yeah I saw how thick they were and it's a dream come true to have such thick books
I'm the type of person who will enjoy a show for what it is even if it doesn't match the books, except for eragon f the eragon movie
I like the eragon movie way more than the books tbh
I think it embraces it's camp and everything about Saphira, her wings, the way she moves, and her emotions, are absolutely wonderful
Oh yeah Saphira was beautiful I'm just mad it misses out on really important things from the book
It's been years since I've watched it though
I need to reread the first book then read the rest of the series
But it's a book series my former best friend always recommended so its gonna take awhile till I do, wounds still open
Digi, when you decide to, let me know? I've read the first... three... books? Yeah. I think the first three, but it's been over a decade, so I'd love to re-read them, so if you want a reading partner to share the experience of the books with and stuff, hit me up
Okay that would be awesome! Mind if I scream about got books too?
I will never complain about that. ๐
Okay!!
Any books you wanna read too lemme know and I can get em and read along with you
One I really recommend is the time travelers wife, can pick it up from a used bookstore for like 6 usd so whatever that translates to in german currency
Time Travelerโs Wife is already on the Google Doc
I read the first Eragon book right after it came out and Iโve been meaning to go back and read the rest. So many books, so little time.
How did the book compare to the movie? I only saw the movie, and enjoyed it enough that Iโve been hesitant to read the book.
Shlee speaking facts on GoT
I was trying to get into wheel of time, by Robert Jordan, but alas I only have the first 5, although I had been promised the rest by my dad for Xmas... As you can infer, I am still waiting
The book is waaaay better than the movie although the movie is still good! The book has a lot more tragedy in it though so be prepared
But also sweet little happy moments you dont want to miss out on
Tragedy is a tough thing. My favorite book of the last 12 months was dark and full of death, but also managed to have a Shawshank Redemption level uplifting theme, but then there are books like 1984 that are nothing but tragedy and hopelessness.
I love torturing myself with tragedy tbh
Love a good dystopian novel ngl.
๐ any recs?
want to read Do Androids dream of Electric Sheep still (i.e. the book bladerunner is based off of)
Book monk who sold his ferari
no.6 is a rly good dystopian novel series!
i think its been recommended before but its rly interestin because the main characters from the "utopia" but gets his eyes opened to how it actually treats people who arent citizens
plus theres a rly good mlm romance that makes me soft
Oh it is really good! The novel is my favorite version! Very Orewllian without the stuff that makes Orwell gross. It can be hard to find translated out of Japanese, but there are fan translations on the internet.
yes! i downloaded the 9th avenue fan translation and put it on my kindle i reread it every year ๐
the novels are V Gay shions whole inner monologue is just "nezumi.. ๐ฅบ ๐"
Ahhh I need to read it then
It was much weirder than the movie.
Heh, can only guess
speaking of specific gripes with No. 6, i found the anime to be weirdly fast paced and like, very sudden about things happening but I loved the novels so much better in terms of that
WoT is amazing worldbuilding, but gets reaaaaaally dragging by the 9th and 10th book but worth the slog if you're invested in the world and the story.
It picks up again by the climax though, and the books that they commissioned Sanderson to write were typical Sanderson, by which I mean they were amazing.
tugs braid
heh, thanks for the words of encouragement
still waiting for the other books though
I could not get into WoT enough to get past like the 8th book. It probably didn't help that I was mostly reading them because I knew Brandon Sanderson finished the series... Someday I'll try again.
Last time I read WoT was in high school, so that was....11 years ago. I can't remember the plot anymore haha
some manga/manwha recommendations!
jujutsu kaisen : the main character lives a normal life until he encounters a cursed object in a school. i won't continue because spoilers but it's ongoing and really interesting. it has an excellent anime adaptation just about to end.
sweet home : during a zombie apocalypse, a group of people are trapped in an apartment block and have to trust each other, not knowing if the person next to them will turn that very second. it has a netflix series as well, but i recommend reading the manwha first. it's finished and fully on webtoon.
I watched the sweet home netflix adaptation first and I loved it until the final 3 episodes. Things kinda progressed a bit too fast for no reason, I'm pretty sure the webtoon is better
also jujutsu kaisen (anime) SLAPS, its like SUPER sterotypically shounen, but in the best way possible. It doesn't really add anything new to the genre, its just takes the basics and elevates it to the next level. Apparently all you need for a god tier shounen anime is amazingly animated fight scenes and entertaining characters
sweet home kinda spoilers??
||me and my dad adored it, i watched the netflix adaptation first. it did kinda go really fast and we were both confused by the open ending||
YESS it might be seen as "generic" but it's generic in the best way possible. imo you don't need a completely unique never-seen-before story for an anime/manga/book to be good, sometimes generic is good ๐คญ
just ordered some exciting new books from folio
looking forward to having my own copies of these at long last
was looking at fantasy sales on kobo and found this gem lmfao

Anyone here know good places to get manga? Iโm trying to figure out what id like to get over the next little bit but I cannot find the first volume of one anywhere. itโs sold out in every chapters (Canadaโs major book store chain) amazon, rightstuf anime, and a couple other places Iโve looked
And itโs just the one volume
I canโt find everything else no problem
Have you tried BookDepository?
Oh, damn. ๐ฆ The only other thing I can think of would be checking with the publisher on their website and seeing if you can buy it directly from them, or maybe eBay? Good luck! I really hate not being able to find that one specific book or volume I want >_<
Miles Morales: Spider-Man #24 spoilers
||Welp. Guess Miles' Clone Saga is about to begin. Let's hope they can stick the landing with it||
If you're in the US, check half.com or Thrift Books :) Both are great places for manga in my experience.
I am not in the us unfortunately
Ahhh I love the lovely bones, watched the movie growing up but now I have the book!
Oh my God, I was going to watch that eventually! ๐ฎ It's so cool to see y'all recommend it. I'll definitely keep it in mind.
Yeah I read the book and then watched the movie, both made me cry.. and I don't usually cry at movies. The book is written in a way that is beautiful yet it leaves you feeling immense pain, unfortunately.
Oh, and behind her eyes has a netflix adaption which is good.. the music is captivating to say the least.
isn't behind her eyes like weirdly transphobic
Transphobic?? No, I don't think it is-- o_O
Are you talking about at the end?? I don't want to spoil it.. spoilers but I feel as if that wasn't transphobic.. I feel like people like to nitpick at things, although rob did have feelings for David towards the end I feel like he also loved Adele. He didn't want to become a woman, but he liked the life that Adele lived, since he didn't come from money or a wealthy background, and she also had a handsome husband.
i don't know if it's different in the book but the end of the show is pretty ๐ฌ
That's astral projection for you.. I don't know how that's deemed transphobic.
I'm genuinely confused that I had to read an article on how it's transphobic.. It's left me baffled.
spoilers for the twist ||a man using a woman's body to murder and manipulate people is not great from a trans rights perspective||
I don't think they illustrated it to be like that, but I guess it's how the audience perceives things.. he wanted to live her life I guess, since as I am aware he wasn't living it large like Adele was, and then the other lady came along and he wasn't about to be replaced.
I didn't see the transphobia in that.. but I guess people process shows differently.
The article I've read also depicts louise as having "race issues"
I quite enjoyed the show, and watched it in two sittings.. that it never even came to mind.
๐คท i'm just saying it's sketchy and potentially upsetting
it feeds on a lot of really harmful tropes about trans women, which if you not aware of them, i don't think it's really helpful to bring them up here but i would warn any queer viewers/readers ahead of time
It doesnโt establish him as being trans though thatโs what I donโt get.. and he doesnโt want to be a womanโ Itโs to do with astral projection, a lot of people seemed to have liked it, and this is the first that Iโm hearing that itโs transphobic, sorry.
I watched it with a friend and they identify as trans, and he seemed to like it tooโ I donโt know I guess itโs the way that the mind perceives things.
Well, I guess they need to put a trigger warning like they did with 13 reasons why at the beginning of it now.
I don't know if you have, but if you haven't, i recommend Room, by Emma Donoghue, they made a movie but the book is narrated from the pov of the kid and the author does a great job of getting "on the skin" of a 5 year old boy, i found myself gritting my teeth about him at times ๐
Just knowing that itโs based off the fritzl case makes me shiver..
Eehh, not really, i mean... I'll put it in spoilers just in case, ||it is about a kidnapped woman but they aren't related at all||
It was hard to read but I really liked it, would be cautious because it could potentially be really triggering tho
Not sure if anyone is into YA novels here but by any chance has anyone read Perfect on Paper by Sophie Gonzales? (if ur into queer YA romances i highly recommend)
Author of Sweet Home? There are too many items with that title
this is the goodreads link

Hi! Thanks for the recommendation! I just finished reading it and I love it! Some parts definitely had me tearing up; it was wonderful. ๐
Already saved some of the other lgbtq book recommendations in the pinned doc also~
Ohhhh i will have to check it out!! And gosh i love Sophie Gonzales shes one of my newer favorite authors for queer books.
Have you heard of One Last Stop by casie mcquiston? I didnt read red white and royal blue. It felt... a little to rpf-y from the description for me but this one seemed really interesting
No I havenโt! Just looked it up and wow Iโm hooked! Love magical realism and time travel; now I have to excitedly wait till June xD
Iโm actually quite new to queer fiction so any recommendations are much welcome
Ohhh I pretty much exclusively read queer fiction! I could rec you some books if you'd like!
Yes!! That would be amazing thank you
Have any must-reads?
ahhhh Ok I have no idea if u have read these yet or not (i tried to find ur pin and couldnt see it ;-;) but some favorites of mine are Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, Boyfriend Material, Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue (its sequel a Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy is also good but I thought the first book was better), The Starless Sea and One of Us is Lying!
Most of these are rather RomComy, Boyfriend Material is basically a fake-date trope that is done super well, One of Us is Lying is a Breakfast Club meets murder mystery and Gentleman's guide is a regency era road-trip romp with a tiny bit of fantasy thrown into the mix
Aristotle and Dante is about two Mexican American boys dealing with the feeling of being second generation, who they are and who they want to be. It sounds a lot heavier than it is I promise but its still a bit heavier than the rom-com stuff. Meanwhile The Starless Sea is absolutely beautifully written. Im not sure I can tell you much about it without just quoting the back of the book but it has magic and mystery and is more so about a mysterious Library than it is about romance but the main character is a gay black man and i thought it was great!
I'm also a huge baby so horror always freaks me out too much but if your into the genre I also highly recommend Wilder Girls. it's about a girl and her girlfriend living on an isolated island in a post apocolypse. Warnings I'd like to give you tho is there is a lot of body horror in the book.
I've been trying hard to find more good wlw books out there but idky it's been so hard for me. Most of my recomendations on good reads end up being mlm and then i like them so it just cements more in the algorithm to recommend me mlm books I suppose
Yay! these are awesome! I'll probably start with One of Us is Lying or Aristotle and Dante, then the rest. Although I'm super squeamish so not sure if I'll pick up Wilder Girls (though the premise and excerpt was interesting!). thanks again for taking the time to share!! ๐
I LOVE aristole and dante discover the secrets of the universe. that's one of my favourite books. ๐ญ
Yeah of course!! Any time! I love sharing books i hope you like them!! And feel free to message me if u wanna talk to someone about them once youโve finished reading! I know im like that all the time lol
Ahhh saaame! It was actually one of the first queer books i ever read. And god did i id with those boys so much being second gen myself. The whole โnot feeling enoughโ really hit home for me as a young teenager lol
I actually read it cuz my sister recommended it and I knew absolutely NOTHING going into the book. I basically read it annually now, and every time I read it, I just uncover new things I didn't notice before. It's a really nice read. I do remember hearing that their will be a sequel but in Ari's perspective?? I'm not entirely sure ! Don't quote me on that. Hahaha.
Ah I remember hearing that! Tho its an old rumor? I remember hearing it the year it was published but i havnt been keeping up with his works sense. I'd be so stoked if we got one in ari's perspective!
When I looked it up yesterday, I saw that there is a sequel called Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World with the publication date saying oct 12, 2021. ๐
Ohhhh i am excited! it's been a long time coming lol I should reread the first book this october then!
Ouuuuuuuuuuuu, sequel !!! That's exciting ! So sooon
Lol I just preordered the book! Now to wait for october!!
Nice ! I'll probably do a reread right before i read the sequel !
yeah smart idea! God I blow through books in like a day.... lol guess i know what i'm doing october 11th
Theres a book I read that reminded me a bit of Aristotle and Dante and i dont know if im just bad at making connections or if it is similar but I'll toss it out as a suggest regardless. Its called We Are The Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson. Its a young adult novel about a teenage boy who spends most of the novel figuring out if he thinks the world is worth saving/should be saved from total destruction a task given to him by aliens. Which makes it sound a bit weird and funny (and at some points it is both) but its actually a pretty serious and touches on some more serious topics like loss of loved ones, depression, and some familiar problems. And also several different ways the world could possibly end. I really enjoyed it and while a lot of it is a bit more on the serious side theres definetly some things in it that lighten it some and made it a pretty easy read for me and I've been struggling a ton to get through longer readings lately
Saaaamr. Especially if the pacing is good and that story is really captivating me. I can just keep going
Ouuuu. Iโve heard of this ! Never read it. Maybe Iโll pick it up one day !
I know right xD Buddy reading is like the only thing that can slow me down and even then I always read the following chapters minutes after talking to my friend i've been reading with.
Ohhh I never heard of that book before. I'll give it a go, it sounds fun! As I grow older I have found that serious books are always easier when they're balanced out with lighter elements. I swear the books i read in high school were so damn dark...
oh my gosh I know, I had such an issue reading assigned books in school and it ended up with me just eventually not reading them. Although some of that was also because I just don't care to be told what to read and I reacted poorly to it lol
Oh god yeah I feel you. I couldnt be bothered to read most of the books assigned. I remember I had tried to read Kite Runner when we were assigned it in class and god.... it was so triggering and dark i threw the book across my room and refused to read another book in that class for the rest of the year.
Ya, I noticed reading with someone can slow you down especially if you try going by chapter or whatever.
Or it's that awkward waiting time period to wait for whoever you are reading with even though you really want to talk about something.
Right! I hate the waiting the most.
My best friend and I both read pretty fast. We often say 'ok we will read x chapters in a night' depending on how easy the read is or how interesting it is so we can just talk right away the next day xD and even that is hard for me to do
If I am IN a book, I NEED to keep going. Looool
book buddies ;o;
Are comics allowed here as well? :p
yes. ๐
Okay ^^, currently reading (and i still have a lot to catch up to...) The recent BRZRKR series from Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt & Ron Garney very nice! If you have no problem with some violence (It is bloody) The story is a about a guy who can't die but he wants to die and has made a deal to achieve his goal and he does some jobs for them. Of course we get to know more about his "condition" Next is The Green Lantern Vol. 1: Intergalactic Lawman from Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp. Really a fun read! First Green Lantern comic i'm reading so i'm getting to know more about the universe.
Just finished reading Aristotle and Dante! Really was a wonderful read ๐ are all these books gonna make me cry haha.
thanks again for the recommendation
Ohhhh Im glad u liked it!! I promis the others arnt as sad!!
(at least not to my memories xD)
are you ever just so not into a book that you're constantly checking how many pages are left in the chapter, but you don't wanna just drop the book because it's the last book in the series so you feel like you have to finish it? ๐
Yes and then I normally set it down anyway because its a waste of my time and I go reread an old favorite to recover
yes. hundred percent. if i aint feeling it, i start reading a webtoon and after i finish the webtoon's chapter i go back to the book. then i keep doing that until i finish the book. hahaha
im like 7 books behind my reading goal now because this stupid book is taking me so long to read lmao
What book is it?
Frost Like Night by Sara Raasch. It's the last book in a YA fantasy trilogy. The first book was really really good, but then the second book was kinda ehhhh but I still got through it just fine. I was hopeful it was just middle book syndrome... looks like it was not lol
Oh noooo! I've been meaning to read that series forever ๐ Whomp
Sameeeee ! ๐ซ
