Oooh the book looks interesting!
I'm trying to start a booktube but I can't decide on a channel name guys!
https://strawpoll.com/polls/e7ZJOKDjvy3
Help me decide which book from my tbr to read and review for my first booktube video guys!
This is one of my favorite comics ever
It’s about a bunch of Magical Girls after the big final battle is over but this scary villain starts terrorizing their home so they have to come back together to stop her
Just bought this book yesterday, haven't read it yet since I'm working on another one but still excited to get to it when the time comes!
That’s one of my favorite books!
It was reccomended to me by the same dude who reccomended First Law by Joe Abercrombie and Poppy War, so I figured I was in for a treat
I've been wanting to read the poppy wars
I will say this, I've only read the first book and it was really REALLY intense. Good book, but so dark that after finishing it I could not move onto the next one. I had to stop and read something else as a palate cleanser. To put into perspective; First Law is a grimdark fantasy where nothing ends well for anybody, and I drank those books up back to back no issue and nearly used one of those books as said palate cleanser.
I'll get back to it eventually I'm sure, but some really horrific stuff was described in enough detail to make me sick to my stomach.
geeeeeez, ive never heard anyone describe it that bad and maybe you just talked me out of it lmfao
The author does amazing work, as evidenced by making me feel so viscerally. If you like very dark stories I'd reccomend it, but if grim and brutal stories aren't your thing then I would absolutely avoid it.
An amazing story about how much the main character is willing to sacrifice to meet her goals, but super intense.
Have y’all ever read this book
This book is so amazing
I will protect Zèlie with my life
It’s about this group of magical people in the land of Orisha who lost their powers sometime ago! So the king launches a devastating attack. And now these magical people are considered lesser citizens. But now, the magic is starting to return to people like the main character, Zèlie. So she, her brother Tzain, and Princess Amari have to work together in order to fulfill a ritual in order to bring magic back to the people who lost it.
It’s literally fire
Here’s the actual plot of anyone wants to read!
This series is soo good!!! I love it a lot, I listened to the audiobooks and loved the narrator, then decided to buy both books for my shelf haha. :D
Yeah this book is really great sad that a lot of Nigerians don't like the way she clashed everything together. It seems she was focused more on a western audience.
I didn’t know that
Oh I didn't realize that either!
I have just started reading the FNAF books but I realized there is noth the novel versions and graphic novels.. Any ideas which one I should go for? I love both types of books XD
I just read the graphic novel version of Silver Eyes
Yeah, it doesn't really fit how most of our royalty work and the map is like someone taking all the major cities and joining them together . But it does makes sense since she really didn't grow up in Nigeria. She needs more research but I think she already knows that and is working on it for future works.
This book is amazing if you need a good read
is anyone here perhaps interested in being a beta reader for the first book of the trilogy I'm writing? :)c it's a queer supernatural romance (and maybe horror?)
I have the first book done but I'm just looking to see if it's something people are generally interested in. If you are, you can DM me and I'll send you the link for it :))
hopefully this isn't against any rules 😅
I‘m interested
Anyone here read the Gentleman Bastard series? Am in the middle of The Republic of Thieves and was wondering if anyone would recommend a fantasy book with similar camaraderie and banter that Locke and Jean have because they are just too 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 I don't wanna part ways with them😭
i'm interested
this looks interesting !!
Have you tried royal assassin ? I know it's a classic but a good one
but the camaraderie is between an animal and the main protagonist
meeee
also I have a friend who might love it!
Think I got that on my want-to-read list since it's on similar books to gentleman bastards on goodreads. But I already have Six of Crows on my next to read! Maybe after I finish that lol
Just started a bookstagram for those who want any book recommendations! https://www.instagram.com/p/ConS7NLJf8K/?igshid=MDJmNzVkMjY=
📚Book Review📚
Synopsis:

Jen’s no longer innocent son is held in custody. After an eventful night, she manages to fall aslee...
I just discovered this book youtuber and I'm crying cuz they're literally everything I want to be lol. Cute, cozy, cottagecore, and most importantly BOOKS and I loooove it
Her channel is The Book Leo, which only adds to my obsession because my name is Leo
I'm trying to start one and a booktube actually
My friend recommended this one to me and honestly, I’ve never read a relatively cliched romance book before BUT this one is holding my attention
I’m 30 pages in and loving it
Also, scrolling up because I joined the server recently. This book is one of my all time favorites. I need to find time to read the second
Any other Agatha Christie fans here? I always do a summer re-read of some of her books, and I'm putting together a reading list of some of her novels for myself. Summer's a perfect time for some thrillers and mysteries, with or without 'orrible murrrderrr. 🙂
Waaaaaa I want to try to jump into Agatha Christie's works, what is your recommendation for newbie like me?
Hey, that's a great question! That depends a little on what sorts of books and/or stories you're into, as she has a lot of traditional murder mysteries (obviously), but also a lot of thrillers, outright tragedies, some very scary stories, some supernatural ones, and also flat-out snarky fun stories.
All that being said, Mrs McGinty's Dead is a fantastic summer read: it's rather lighthearted (despite being a murder mystery) as the narrative doesn't take any of the characters too seriously and pokes fun at their absurdities, and it's a pretty straightforward whodunnit. 🙂
Christie has a massive catalog, so it's never a bad idea to follow her main characters chronologically through their series, either; for Poirot, start with The Mysterious Affair at Styles, and for Miss Marple, Murder at the Vicarage.
A lot of her earlier works are now public domain so you can find them for free on Project Gutenberg, and they're so ubiquitous that there's a very good chance your local library will have a lot of them on hand (and maybe more in the storage stacks).
Read her novels when I was a kid, my fav was Curtain
AHH I JUST GOT THE FOURTH HEARTSTOPPER BOOK!!!
I'm so excited lmao 😂
Definitely recommend reading the series ❤️
I love the books so much. As do my students! Can’t keep the series on the shelf.
I can't wait for season 2 of the series and book 5. I'm waiting anxiously until then, probably gonna be one of the many things I do during my favorite season (Fall) 💖
Read/watch Heartstopper!
WAAAAA I need to start catching up with Heartstopper again!
Have you watched the show yet?? If not, you should! If you enjoyed the books, you'll definitely enjoy the show, and Season 2 comes August 3rd. It'll cover the events of the 3rd book, and I think I saw something about a Prom in the 3rd season? I really need to see more Mr. Ajayi and Mr. Farouk, I love them for some reason 😭 😂
Now that I've quit my job ATM because I'm moving 4 hours away I might finally be able to start my book tube here's what I'm reading rn I found it in a video today
sigh if only
That looks fun
I love those vanlife/schoolie videos
You can go anywhere and still have a place to sleep at night and without having to pay a ton for a hotel room
Too expensive though... and I have no idea how to build it... and idk how to drive a BUS I can barely drive a regular car
also fuel is really expensive when you drive around a fair amount 🥲
yeah...
If it's like one or two people, then it's cute. I think that'd be awesome!
I've seen families of like 12 living in these things though with most of their kids sleeping on couches and floors while these parents get to sleep in these ginormous beds though. Yeah, I think that's child abuse :/ making your bloody children sleep on the floor or a bench
I might have to check that book out, though 😅
Seriously
Currently reading throne of glass and this is one of my favourite lines in the book 🥺💕
I know throne of glass has a lot wrong with it, but I love it so much
I love it! ACOTAR series was one of my faves
I haven't read that one yet but I shamelessly want to lol
MLM merman romances that aren't over sexualised smut (because I don't like it when female authors fetishize gay men):
Song of the Sea by Duckie Mack
Scales Like Stars by D.J Russo.
Haven't read them but I believe they're good
SJM is incredibly problematic. I won't police people's reading but I think people should be aware of the crap she's done when they enjoy her books
And what does that have to do with reading her novels? Seems like you’re policing because all you doing is talking awful of what others are reading…?
I read novels that are popular and get recommended to read to make content.
I'm just pointing out she's a problematic author and she's made money off Breonna Taylors death by using it to promote her book
And people told her it wasn't good. And yet she still kept the post up
I'm only informing you. I can't control what you read. No need to get defensive
I’m not I’m just seeing what you’ve been commenting and explaining what I see with you policing others on what they read
People can like books and not the author.
But getting upset for others that enjoy these novels. The book community is about supporting other readers especially with myself being apart of Booktok
All I'm saying is she's a problematic author and people need to be aware of that if they're choosing to support her and give her money
I'm also apart of booktok. And some of us think problematic authors need to be held responsible.
It sounds like to me you're refusing to acknowledge she's problematic. But whatever. I'm no longer engaging in this discussion so enjoy talking to yourself ✌🏻
I’ve had these novels way before all this came out. I will be doing what I want with my money. But if you do not like it than by all means you don’t have to buy them or read them
Then why even comment lol 😂
Has anyone read Fourth Wing? I keep comparing it to ACOTAR but I’m personally liking it better.
I haven’t read it yet but I’m waiting for mine to be shipped out lol
I just read it about 2 weeks ago and then started rereading ACOTAR and I agree. I like it better.
What a weird situation I missed
i tried doing stuff your kindle day (idk if this is world wide or not) and it isn't working and now i'm sad
Has anyone read Fourth Wing? Is it worth the hype?
It’s a lot of hype to live up to but it was a really fun read.
My friend said it isn't worth the hype but worth the read. She gave it three stars
Any Rick Riordan fans out there? I just finished Heroes of Olympus and I'm unsure if it's okay to read Trials of Apollo next, or is there a different series I need to read before? I've seen a lot of ppl discuss order online but I was curious if anyone else on this discord read the series.
I read most of his books, and except for the greek themed ones the order you read them isnt that important.
I personaly would recommend to read the trials of Apollo seperate after you finished the other series.
The Kane chronics are also very nice to read and the Magnus Chase ones are also nice but sometimes a bit confusing, but that might be a me problem.
Huge Rick Riordan fan, didn't read Trials of Apollo or Magnus Chase (yet) lol
I'm thinking I'll probably read Magnus Chase and then Trials of Apollo, which would make my read order (for myself) as follows:
Percy Jackson, Kane Chronicles, Heroes of Olympus, Magnus Chase, Trials of Apollo
But money is tough, and time is tougher
Trials follows events in Heroes so yes you can read that after. Magnus and Kane happen in the same universe, but you don’t need to read them to read Trials.
alright thanks!! I was thinking of studying Egyptian and Norse mythology before I read Magnus and Kane so I think maybe if it doesn't matter the order I'll do Trails first to get all the greek mythology over with. 🤔 we'll see..
As always, RR does a good job of introducing all the relevant concepts in his own work
I agree. RR is a great researcher and explains things a lot. I read the first Kane and Chase but haven’t had time for the rest but could follow really well. He’s a great story teller.
he is!! plus the dictionary at the back is super helpful!! I love nerding out about mythology tho so i like to really deep dive before hand so i know every single detail about the mythology 😂
Hi I am just putting this here because the romance and found family in the book I'm reading has me SQUEALING
Ok that's all
What book are you reading?
The Hourglass Throne (The Tarot Sequence #3) by KD Edwards
What's the Tarot Sequence about? It sounds quite intriguing 🤔👌
Imagine if Atlantis actually existed and had remained a secret up until WW1. During which it got destroyed and a new Atlantis was made. It is made up of magical people who are the embodiment of the major arcana: there are courts for each "card."
Rune st John is the fallen prince of the sun court. No heirs, no money and no prospects. He is contracted by Lord Tower to locate one of the missing sons of Lady Justice. Him and his best friend and bodyguard, brand, uncover secrets and a threat that could destroy Atlantis while searching for the missing son. Rune soon realises that there are more secrets buried under his courts loss.
That's basically the premise of book one. Magical urban fantasy mystery. Also disaster queer and his bodyguard bestie who's the mom of the duo 🤣
If you like found family, comedy, action, healthy relationships, wholesome romance, mystery, magic and let's just adopt all these stray kids, you'll like this series
Ooh the 3rd book is out? I've to read that. Remember the first 2 books being funny in a lighthearted way and wholesome, plus lgbt protagonist in a fantasy which is my genre to a t
Yesss! And book four comes out soon as well I believe
Ooh def gonna read it after I finish my current read Oathbringer. it's a light read compared to this lol
Yeah, while I'm enjoying it I do have a romcom on the side because damnnnn. I legit full on cried reading the hourglass throne today
Ooh high praise, gonna look forward to reading it then. what romcom book might this be if it's the lgbt kind👀
I love the tarot sequence like it's definitely a new fave. But it's heavy at times
And I'm reading The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun. M/M
That was such a fun read! (The Charm Offensive…)
I'm really enjoying it
Update: I am fifty pages from the end and I full on SOBBED at the last couple chapters I've read. Holy moly
Not saying anything cos spoilers, but if you know you know
Finished. Lots of feels, can't wait for book four
Been planning on reading this series for ages xD
I am reading it now but I am a slow reader 🥲 I do like it so far, but I am only on chapter 3
me me me ❤️ read ALL percy jackson books, planning on reading his other series too. Those books kept me SO hooked >.>
I love it! It’s slow in the beginning but starts speeding up! Really great
Her other series ACOTAR series is one of the best and really got me into her books! 😊
Need to read more 😭
These past few months I’ve been getting back into reading and it’s extremely hard when I have to try and read one I’m not interested in but I gotta complete and give my feedback and etc.
That is ture too.
i find that it easier for me to read more books at the same time and always switch to the one I'm most interested in.
but if you have to give feedback at a certain time..that makes it a little difficulte with the switching
There's a new book out on aug 1 that is totally up my alley and I will be buying it and reading it immediately
Wasn't sure where to put this but look
Finished the Charm Offensive. New fave romcom! It made me happy and feel so much
Do any of you have a Kindle? And if so, is it worth it cause I’ve been thinking of getting one recently
I think the merfolk are all named after mountains
Ooo that's awesome
I think that depends on you. And what type of kindle you're looking for.
there's also some pretty decent non-amazon ones like kobo, I guess they're just a little less 'convenient'
Interesting, I’ll def look into those
Like I use an Amazon fire tablet for my kindle. And my eyes can get tired reading on it, whereas with an actual book my eyes are fine. The kindle paper white is matte and mimics actual paper
i use kobo 👍 .my book at the time :The Stormlight Archive , Brian sanderson
Currently reading “To Charm a Dark Prince” by Kathryn Ann Kingsley (Coming out August 2023)
I absolutely love Charm Offensive! It's such a layered and nuanced story and I really could never have predicted how it would turn out. What a lovely surprise of a book this was.
Absolutely!
You need to read this.
Like, now.
Seriously tho I love it so far, It's a mystery about 5 kids who end up in detention after being falsely accused; but only four of those kids make it out of that classroom. There's Addy, the homecoming princess, Bronwyn, the brains, Nate, the criminal, Cooper, the star athlete and Simon, the creator of their school's gossip app. On monday, Simon dies, and apparently his death wasn't an accident. On Tuesday, Simon had plans to post secrets about the four kids he was in that detention room with, making them all suspects. I highly recommend it, it's great so far!!
I think Netflix has a serie based in that series of books
I’m pretty sure it’s on peacock, actually
If you’re talking about One of Us is Lying, that is
Just finished reading ACOTAR and it was honestly so good
Great series based on books. we have the big "Foundation" by apple, then "the wheel of time" Amazone. The second part of Dune. I still have trouble with the film version, I have much easier time reading books.
I read the first few books of each of those series but didn’t find them nearly as interesting as the shows/movie. Maybe this will be the year I finish them so I can have a proper say about the adaptation.
I will say Foundation has kind of lost me and I’m only really hanging on because Lee Pace is quite nice to look at.
I find it a bit harsh to go straight to foundation. The universe is so complex and rich. I would rather advise by discovering the universe on books like "The Caves of Steel" and what follows from it well before foundation
I think that going straight to foundation without having introduced a minimum of culture on the Asimov world is a mistake.
Dune has the advantage of having already lived in the global imagination through games and films. Villeneuve can sit on this acquired culture and come and bring his vision of history
Oh really? I didn’t realize Foundation wasn’t an ideal starting point. I’ll grab Caves of Steel from the library and give it a go.
From aasimov I also recomienda Azazel, not related to foundation but a fun easy read
Asimov's work is just Titanic. the instruction of Elyja Baley and the Robots R. Daneel Olivaw and Giscard seem to me essential. Their understanding of the world and the future of humanity is at the heart of everything
Are any of y'all reading Amari and the Night Brothers
I started but then a student wanted to read it so o didn’t get back to it I really liked the first few chapters. Way better than HP!
It sure is!
I’m almost twelve chapters into The Song of Achilles and I am ✨ worried✨ about what’s to come considering known mythology
Oh yes you defo should 😭
Btw have u finished it? 👀
I got distracted by fanfics instead of finishing it tho
I finished yesterday morning and it destroyed me, as predicted 😭
Has anyone read the dragon age books?
I might continue the translated novel sometimes english dont register to my brain i wanna cry reading this 😭
Not yet but i plan to but i wanna buy the graphic novels first tho
The only reason: fenris
Haha yes i have the graphic novel omnibus it's very cool
But i aslo have all the books in hardcover
The books are so well written and fit right into the story
Which book would you recommend to get first? As DA got plenty of novels
Thsts such a dream 😭
i'd say the stolen throne it's the first in the time line and the calling ties in as the second the 2 of them can also be read as stand alone stories.
i have picture of them give me a sec
ther's more but i'm having a hard time finding them
Haha, I stopped buying physical books when I started making piles in my room. This sucks. Digital is good. and in addition, it is less heavy in the bag, several volumes
yeah true i'm just a bit of a dragon haha love having a hoard of nice and cool books
my entire Asimov collection ended up with a brother who doesn't read books. I don't understand why he wanted to keep them.
ahhh you should
even if it’s painful
I feel like my brain chemistry has changed now
I do have a Dragon Age book but I cannot even remember which right now
I’ll go digging in my garage later, heh
Alright noted!
I want em
And after that im gonna listen to achilles and patroclus playlists just for 😔👈
I wish I shipped them beyond about… 17 years old? But as they grew Achilles, well—
But the wayyyy Patroclus loooooved him
I could write a thesis
I meannnn theyre fictional to ship soooo 😭
I agree even longer than the one i wrote and this one is full w passion and love i have towards them 😔
Oh I only meant I think Patroclus deserved better as they got older 😭 but he loved Achilles so mUuUuuUch that I wanted him happy
YES THOSE 2 DESERVE SOOOOO MUCH BETTER PUNCHING THE AIRRR
OMG Song of Achilles!❤️ I also stopped reading in the middle of it because I dont want it to end and especially I KNOW WHATS COMING my heart is not prepared :')))
even when you know… even then!!! it still destroyed me ha aha ahhhhh (screams into pillow)
my best friend was reading with me and she doesn’t cry and this book got her to
hecK
Oh no.... Welp I guess I have to brace myself and continue reading it again🥲 I feel like I'm just delaying the inevitable heartbreak hahaha
If you need emotional support I’m here for you
The one book that I spent 3/4 bawling my eyes out reading was A Monster Calls. I read it just after my best friend passed away and it hit home a lot. But in a good way if you know what I mean? It was such a good book but heartrenching
I might have to check that one out too!
I’m into books that make me feel things too, even if it’s sadness lol
on my TBR scared to have my heart punch while i read 🥹
Ooh I gotta look for this one! I think my heart can take another hit🥹
It's alright, as espynat0r said, we will be your emotional support here🥹
Keep your tissues handy.
oooof. i think ill do it. after this current 2 books im reading haha then emotional damage
I told my boyfriend today that I am now living my life as BSoA and ASoA (before and after The Song of Achilles)
It was emotional but wooorth it
Thinking of reading Red, White and Royal Blue next as cleanser
definitely do this!! especially since the movie is coming out in less than 24 hours
I've been looking for books to make me cry, adding this one to my tbr right now!!
I’m tempted to read the book before I see the movie! I’ve already got it downloaded on the kindle 👀 maybe I’ll start it tomorrow
if anyone interested in danmeis and angst, i will recommend
yu wu
the husky and his white cat shizun
mo xiang tong xiu's novels esp the 2nd novel and 3rd one (i LOVE svsss, it has angst yes but the latter 2 clench my heart in a chokehold
nan chan from what i heard i havent finished it yet but it seems interesting
these are xianxia tho aka fantasy themed for chinese novels
the first 2 titles i mentioned are by Meatbun, she's pretty ruthless to her characters which i Love, basically her works are the embodiment of "it gets worse before it gets better" tho if you checked the carrd before reading, pls heed the content warnings
gonna sound like a nerd here but the book has so much more depth than the movie, definitely worth reading first to gain some insight
that might be the route I go then hehe 👀 I need something light-ish to read over before I go back to full reality aka work and school, haha
One of my best friends is giving me this to read. Loved the first season, so I’m excited!
It’s so good. The whole series is. I read them all in a few days.
She also has some novellas with the same characters. As well as a few unrelated novels
I feel like I’m about to go down a rabbit hole after I finish this one 👀
I still haven't finished the second season 🤔 maybe tomorrow 👀
I've read Mo Dao Zu Shi! i'm interested in Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's other works 😄
Mo Dao Zu Shi is legendary lol
Mdzs legendary for That extra chapter lmao
Also read her other works! Tgcf is the longest, afaik it's roughly 1m words translated a bit overwhelming it even took me a year to finish and my gf have reread it 5 times 😭😭😭😭
I will! I'm actually trying to finish reading Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint right now, its been days and I'm still not even halfway done🥲
oh man another long novel idk if i could read that one tho 😭
It does take some time to finish🥲 But thankfully the story is quite interesting so whenever I read it I go
until the next day rolls around and feel all the regret of that choice 😆
There are some authors I don’t read until the weekend exactly because I know I won’t sleep if I start reading
Im so close to finishing ACOMAF and chapter 54 had me sobbing like a child and I am still recovering
FAIR cuz thats me reading tgcf book 2 onwards 😭
The Reaper Saga by Eli Kwake is a really good series worth checking out
How are you strong enough to resist the temptation from reading the first page :'))
I have to yell at myself and sometimes fail. Some are just too good and if they’re part of a series there’s no hope for me 😆
It's the red banner on the flagship titles that annoys me. Especially since they also put it on the digital version. which completely ruins the cover.
this was me when I was reading V.E. Schwabb books! literally can't peel my eyes from the book
and I'm wondering if anyone else has read A Darker Shade of Magic too?👀
I was going to. Had the eBook out from the library and everything. Then got distracted and it returned itself before I opened it 🤣
Loved the series! Can't wait for The Fragile Threads of Power!
oh nooo🤣 omg I love that book and I'm guilty of liking the villains more than the MC😭
I just found out about this book! THANK YOU and I shall track this book down! I wanna read ittt!!
I can't wait for volume 5.5 coming out in September of the LN The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten. There's that and waiting on my one favorite author to finish up book 3 of the series The Songs of Eirren (as of right now comprised of Hero's Song and Fire Arrow.)
I don't think it's big enough for me.
My hubs saw this pic the other day and wondered why we don’t build houses with stuff like this. It’s all just boring boxes.
something something boring boxes gain value and sell better 🙄
I agree though. If i found a house with something like this built in, it'd be an instant offer from me lol
I'd live in here
Only way you could get me out of there is telling me Pablo is waiting for me at the front door 🤷♀️
This reading nook and an owl cape🥺
It's like one of those cool window seats!
I found out people make book bindings for fanfiction and I wanna make one for one of mine so bad just so I can have a physical copy to read is that bad? I just wanna relive the stories over and over
Book binding is fun if you want to make a copy for yourself, or you could go to a printer if you want many copies.
Book binding is a beautiful art too! Give it a shot, some of the binding types are pretty simple and straight-forward
I've wanted to read Count of Monte Cristo ever since reading and loving the abridged version in 8th grade English. All time favorite school required reading. I just found this version in the translation (Robin Buss) that I want, and it looks pretty.
https://www.amazon.com/Count-Cristo-Penguin-Clothbound-Classics/dp/0141392460/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1697009881&sr=1-4
I just got the latest Percy Jackson book for my school. It’s catalogued ready to checkout. I read the first paragraph and have decided the students can wait until Monday to get their hands on it. I need to read it to be able to recommend it properly of course.
(The first paragraph was typical silly Riordan writing. )
It’s very silly so far
It’s also very short and consumable within a day or two depending on how fast you read. It’s my bedtime book though so I will be slowly reading it for a while
I love the penguin clothbound collection. There’s a great IG account rebinding all their books to match the style. It’s so satisfying.
Been listening to the first Mistborn audiobook! I like it a lot.
I've not read any Sanderson, but at some point I'll finish Wheel of Time. But it's been so long since I read Winter's Heart that I feel like I need to start over.
Also, I love audiobooks. Turning into my favorite way to enjoy a book.
Books are my life
First audiobook for me personally but am enjoying it! It’s easy to multitask 🫡
I mostly listen while driving, but someitmes at home, too. RN I'm at home and rereading Scatter on audiobook, which is an adorable Sapphic superhero romance with time travel, by Molly J Bragg.
I keep trying audiobooks but my brain doesn’t let me concentrate on the words if I’m not all in. I’ve tried listening while doing other things and had to rewind constantly because I missed something important 😂. I’ve never really been an auditory learner anyway. I do much better with text. I skip the video if it has a transcript I can read.
Different strokes! I have certain podcasts I can’t listen to because it’s hard to focus on them.
I’m exactly the same, I just zone out/lose concentration if it’s audio only
I love the Mistborn series. Vin is one of my favorite fictional characters. I just started the second half of the Mistborn series and it mostly just makes me wanna reread the original trilogy.
Audiobooks are great! I do occasionally have a hard time getting into a new audiobook, but mostly I just love not having to put my book down because I need to do something else. And it’s of course great for commuting if you have a commute, which I do.
SHe's so good!! I'm unfortunately pretty early inb the book and can't discuss too too much (about the 3 and a half / four hour mark in the audiobook) at length but I like what I've listened to so far!
also my friends kept talking about how much i'd like kelsier and i'm cursing my own predictability on that one bc they're right
Kelsier is so wonderful. He really makes it easy to get into the world.
Yesssss
i want to listen more but i tend to listen in downtime / while playing games and i've been busy o<-<
but i will catch up! my friend just finished the original trilogy and really loved it so i'm excited and mildly concerned about what's coming
maybe more than mildly
My favorites are The Divine Comedy by Dante narrated by Heathcote Williams, and the Redwall series and Flying Dutchman trilogy written and narrated by Brian Jacques.
These are the ones I just read/am currently reading! Both authors are amazing! Upsessed with the AGGGTM series!
These are the Ontario Library Association YA award books this year if someone wants some book ideas. (I haven’t read them yet as they only just came into the library today! I love book delivery day. We also had 10 grade 7/8 award books arrive too.)
a fellow ontarian! ill have to see if my local branches have any of these!
Aah I really love this setup! All the fall colors, the books, and PUSHEEN!😍
Woah, which one do you recommend?👀 Based on the title alone, I'm curious about Of Light and Shadow!
I'm going to buy some books soon, this is perfect timing!
Of light and shadow is a fantasy. It sounds really good. The author also wrote Hunted by the sky that won a couple of years ago. My students loved it.
I’m intrigued by Mall Goth. It’s a graphic novel and set in 2000.
And I love the premise of Dragging Mason County. It’s a coming of age book about a gay kid in small town America. He just wants to be invisible but his best friend loves drag shows and wants to put one on so he ends up helping. (I’ve read the first couple of pages and it’s funny so far). I will say, most of the books have long content warnings. And although As Long as the Lemon Tree Grows looks like a love story, it’s actually about war in Syria and there is a lot of graphic content.
I knew it! I'm always drawn to fantasy novels
Dragging Mason County premise sounds so wholesome, and I checked the premises for the others, they're all interesting. I might just go buy everything now🥺
I have Lemon Tree, but haven't read it yet. Not sure where it actually is ATM.
The rest look intriguing.
I was taking an Instagram photo, lol. AND YASS PUSHEEEEENNN!! That what I say every time I see one, haha.

The design I love it so much aaaa
Hahahah the moment I saw it, I jumped from my seat and scream, I love Pusheen!!!🤣
Pusheen is great. Actually own a multi-colour pen of her, along with a pusheenosaur keychain. Getting the good stuff here is a bit hard though. But there's Pusheen books too.
Anyhoo, that aside I'm hoping the new Rothfuss book will be good, even if ye olde author should finish his King Killer Chronicle trilogy. ^^;;
Debated between here and #🎨arts-and-crafts but I"m doing NaNoWriMo this year, and wondered if anyone else is.
For anyone not aware, it's National Novel WRiting Month, in which participants try to write a small novel, default goal of 50,000 words, during the thirty days of November.
I've participated once before and "won" meaning I hit the goal of 50k.
Oh it's been so long since I've done a NaNo 🤔 it's too late for me to start this year, and I've got too much going on anyway, but maybe next year
Stop tempting me my book list is already long enough and I already have enough books I need to read
Me! I did it every year but I decided to cut down the word count to half this year to challenge myself, I've never been able to write shorter stories before
Also I just found out Victoria Schwabb has released another book, The Fragile Threads of Power. I need that book!🙌
Ooh I’ve never done this before…could be interesting 🤔
And it can literally be about anything, just has to be 50k words?
Yup! There's no rules, just a challenge to write 50k words throughout November! 😄
Anybody can write 50,000 words. The trick is writing 50,000 words that aren't total garbage.
Interesting
does it count if you've been doing this all year round?
That's what revisions are for.
I've read stuff that no amount of revision could have possibly saved. Some stories sound cool in our heads, but until they're written down and someone looks at them objectively, it's hard to know that something just absolutely does not work.
That's why I'm doing a complete rewrite in my project from nano 2021. I couldn't edit it to be good, I had to start over.
The great thing about writing is that, as long as you're being honest with yourself and as objective as possible towards your work, anything you write helps you learn to write better.
Agreed. I'm learning a skill, I don't actually expect to wind up wiht anything publishable.
Also, I'm used to writing third person past, so this time I"m writing first person present, as kind of a challenge.
I like first person - some of my favorite books use first person.
The only one I don't like is second person. I've started more than a few stories in second person and stopped almost immediately, except for one.
second person? I think it my first time knowing about second person perspective in story
I just know there is channel about books here lol
I've done second person successfully only once, and sadly the finished manuscript was lost, I only have the rough draft left
are u joining too?
I associate second person with game narration, like D&D "You find no traps" or old INfocom style text adventures.
I see, I can image it
sounds like interesting myth
I used it for horror
In those contexts, it would make sense - gaming or horror.
But in most stories it usually come across as weird and awkward.
It definitely needs a certain context to do well. I could potentially see it in some hyper-artistic prose piece
But again, it would take a lot of talent to do right
And for a horror story, weird and awkward could even be an advantage. LOL
In my case, it was for an urban legend assignment in high school. Picked Slenderman (who, fun fact, predates creepypasta by several centuries)
I could totally see an anthropologist doing a dissertation on creepypastas.
it's really fascinating actually. Did you know that nearly every culture around the world has some legend or myth centered on a white, faceless or gaunt, usually tall and lanky creature? And a study was done even on what humans find instinctively scary and without fail they came up with a similar image. Somewhere in our genetic makeup is an ingrained fear of this type of creature. The question is what happened that caused this?
There's probably a good undead joke in response, but I'm not awake enough to come up with one right now.
Fun idea, but I'm not convinced that by the uncanny valley = monster in evolutionary history hypothesis. Though it could just be a sense that insufficiently close hominids are potentially dangerous, and that might be all it takes.
now see i thought it was just white people tbh but this happens in northern european cultures as well. Slenderman comes from medieval Germany, for example
But who knows.
I didn't know that. Called that even?
Very similar. He was Der Großmann, or The Tall Man
He was first mentioned in 1702, in a mother's journal after her son disappeared, shortly after screaming that "the angel is outside"
I am shivering from reading about faceless ghost and remember some of ghost story around my house, while sit alone drink tea in front of my house at night
I don't go for anything that is more traditional horror, though I have read some dark fantasy which some people would argue is borderline or outright horror.
The Scholomance books, for example
I love to write horror, but i am wimpy and cannot read/watch/play horror media, excepting in a few instances
I doubt there is somekind of slenderman, but there are some faceless ghost here.
and even then i ususally get nightmares
Kinda similar with me maybe, I love listening horror/ghost story but I cant play or watch horror movie or games
I cant handle the jump scare
nice! I'll have to try it 😄
Amateurs same
We shall make the full lore of mee6 beef
GOOD LUCK! I'll be cheering for you and everyone doing the NaNoWriMo!
thanks, good luck to you toooo!
Would anyone be interested in joining a virtual bookclub?
Would be super laid back, casual and hosted in my Discord.
1 book a month starting this month with Holly Jackson's trilogy "A Good Girl's Guide to Murder" (it's so good!)
Let me know if you might me interested, more details to come!
When's the meeting times? If the timezone allows it I might be interested, I'm in the uk
So we will have to figure that out once we have everyone together and see what time works for everyone. As far as weekly discussions, I will post discussion topics and they can be discussed at anytime throughout the week.
Ok, I'm in for now
is it gonna be like disscussion group?
Yes we will have weekly discussions that you can reply to on your own time throughout the week. And then at the end of the book we will figure out a time to have a live discussion either video/voice chat or just regular chat depending on what everyone prefers.
Interesting, im in
that sounds interesting, but I dont read the books is it fine? or I must read the book?
Awesome! Ya'll send me a DM and I will send the link here in a bit.
Well the point of a book club is to read the book, lol. It's 1 book a month starting as soon as we can. We will have a little less than a month this time around, but should be able to set into a good schedule by the end of the year.
hahaha yap, I am reading other book now lol
I'm just getting back into reading so this would intrest me!
Oh, you mean you already read it and just want to participate in the discussion?
This is a really good one to get you back into reading! An easy read and a page turner! Send me a DM so I can send you the link.
I do not read it yet, currently I am still reading science of the magical, but I would like to join. I am curious to what kind of books di you guys usually discuss
Send me a dm and I can send you a link to my server. This will be the first book as I am just starting the club.
ok thank you
Current Read
does anyone have some good YA novel recommendations? I don't know what I want for christmas so I'm looking desperately for interesting books and having no luck 😆 😭
Not sure if it's classified as YA technically but the Inheritance series is an excellent high fantasy series. And it's got a TV show coming out soon (ignore the movie tho the movie was Shamylan ATLA levels of bad)
Thank you! I’ll have to check it out:)
👍 there's 4 hefty books in the main series and then two hefty spin-offs. And I do mean hefty
Hefty stopped looking like a word.
Don't know if it's YA but I just started Mother of Learning and so far it's pretty fun. Almost done with book 1. I would also recommend the cradle series by will wight, very good but can be long as it's 12 books I think.
I also highly recommend a lit rpg called he who fights with monsters.
What kind of stuff are you in the mood for?
If lesbian necromancers, Gideon the ninth seems pretty popular lol.
Divine Rivals and ACOTAR is also hyped, I think it's enemies to lovers romance with magic and stuff.
Ive also heard good things about VE Schwab's books, I think Shades of Magic series and Threads that Bind is the most popular rn.
There's also Caraval which is more magic
The Raven Cycle which is even more magic about 4 schoolboys and a fem MC. Ive seen fanart of them and theyre kinda spicy
Fourth Wing is about dragons and romance.
I havent read any of these so I can't tell you if theyre good, but they seem to be pretty popular. Obviously most YA seem to have romance
The book series that got me back into reading was the Elementals series by A. L. Knorr. It follows four main girls, three of them have their own spin off trilogy/series. One is a mermaid, another is a "witch" (earth powers), another is a fire mage, and another has shapeshifting powers. Theres a fifth girl who controls the wind that appears in the later series. The fire mage and her spin off was my favorite
If non YA and youre an angry vindictive person deep down (like me lmao) The Poppy Wars is kinda more unhinged.
The Tide Child series also seems to be popular, its about people waging war against each other on ships made of dragon bones.
There are too many, my tbr is unmanageable
Just saw this now, thank you for the suggestions!
The first book in the Locked Tomb series is fantastic — I highly recommend it. The series lost me a bit after that, but I think reading the first one is worth it even if you stop there. It’s not technically YA because there is some language and violence so just beware of that
Yeah no idc lol 😂 thanks!! I’ll check it out 🙂
Things that canonically exist in Warrior Cats:
Cat Heaven
Cat Hell
Having extra lives
Time Travel
Possession
Past lives/reincarnation
Dead cats re-entering the physical world
Living cats Physically (not via dreams I mean actually entering) Starclan and the Dark Forest
A badger who has existed since the beginning of time and can speak all animal languages
Anything I've forgotten
Oh Cats with Super Powers
And ghost cats
(Not like after lfie cats, that one ghost cat distinctively belongs to Starclan nor the Dark Forest)
Ableism
Vets and neutering too
That's normal. I'm mainly focusing on just how much the series has gone into marvel comic territory over the years
right now, I'm a big fan of Brian Sanderson. I've been throwing Georges Martin in the trash since he screwed up with the written version of Game of Thrones
I'm rereading the Percy Jackson series right now. I forgot how funny these are
I'm reading a fun superhero book called Wearing the Cape.
It can only be better than the current Marvel series
It's good, but I have some I prefer.
Omg i enjoyed the first series when i was a child. Is it still a good read as an adult?
Some of it
Did y'all know there are where's Waldo audiobooks on Spotify?
Huhwhat?
Are they trolling?
Probably! But it's a thing!
been reading anne of green gables. so far enjoying it! i don't usually like old books since i can't fathom the language of that time but this one is much more..modern friendly? hah
I'm still waiting for The Stormlight Archive. The sequel is a long time coming. Brian Sanderson remains one of my favorite authors
Love Brandon, the lost metal made me cry. The next stormlight book is going to be wild, curious how it'll go and lead into era 2 for stormlight. If you haven't, check out cradle by Will Wight, its also a fun series. It's no epic like stormlight but I loved it.
We don't have anything like Spotify wrapped, but I'm curious what's the most memorable book you've read this year?👀
I've been reading A Pocket Full Of Murder, it's a middle-grade book but I find it really fun to read while chilling and resting!
Oof that’s a toughy
@agile moss @silk portal So my favourite book that I read was Imperium by Robert Harris. It’s the first book in a trilogy about Cicero, the Roman lawyer and senator. It’s based on real events, but told from the perspective of Cicero’s slave.
Ooh I like ancient times books
I just read the synopsys for Imperium, instant wishlist!👀
The series I’m starting again atm is called the Atlantis grail series and it’s basically like hunger games trope
I know right? I always freeze whenever someone asked me any recommendation or memorable books, I have to take a second to think🤣
But they are loooong books
The shortest is 600 and longest 1100 pages lol
Also the myatheira chronicles if you like fantasy 🙂

I used to read a lot of Atlantis themed books, I can't even remember the title anymore, but I remember this one book who said 'Atlantis is located in Indonesia' and i was like WHAAA I'M ATLANTEAN🤣
Lmao 😂
God knows what genealogy I have. I should do one of those test things haha
I think brits have a mix of all sorts lol
Based on my surname I’m very Anglo-Saxon. But I know I have some Irish and Norse ancestry on my mother’s side.
pog
Im a walking Union Jack 😂
But otherwise I kinda struggle with books because I have ADHD. I did go through a big historical fiction phase which started with Imperium.
Then I read a load of books from Simon Scarrow
I need to get back into books
I only read 4 and a half books this year
Ahhh yeah. I have this thing where I need to know what happens to the main characters before I finish a book. Apparently it’s common with people with anxiety but I never knew 😂😂😂
I thought it was just me being weird and impatient lmao
Omg I feel this
Really? I have anxiety but I’ve never experienced that. Then again, I enjoy tragic stories so if the main character dies or worse, I’m fine with it.
Though that might be because the first proper adult book I ever read was 1984…
While reading The Hate U give I got really anxious about the main character
Noooo I like happy endings or at least happy ish 😂 there’s enough tragic going on in the world haha. I’ll be happy in my little book bubble
I love tragedy 😂
Ooof I’ve not read the book but seen the film
In fiction… feel like I should clarify that lol
Like some of my favourite movies… Gone Girl, Prisoners, Silence, Misery…
I can't do tragedy anymore, I'm too emotional
Oh and The Endurance. Except that is more of a documentary about the real life Endurance expedition to the South Pole. Where the ship got stuck in the ice and the crew had to survive for like two years in a freezing hell scape. It’s just the most incredible adventure story about human misery and suffering lol
I’m quite emotional but that’s why I like tragedy
I take medication for anxiety and I think it numbs me a bit, so it’s good to get stimulated and feel something lol
Misery is excellent, I do recommend that film. Silence is just depressing.
Different ship and explorers I know but I’ve been on the HMS discovery up in Dundee the museum is great.
Ooooh very nice
Currently reading the wisteria society of lady scoundrels, which is a silly little romance novel
These books are thrillers 🙂
King Henry the Eighth, eat your heart out
These ones good if you like fantasy, mythology and a bit of romance
Haha 😂
for me that has to be waybound by will wight. last in the series and now I have the sad
Mistborn trilogy!! Best books I've read in a while, I absolutely recommend if you love epic fantasy. The magic system seems infallible and it gives action scenes a complete new standard 🪙
I devoured the series. Brian Sanderson remains on my top author list.
the 'cosmere' according to the author, is a universe in its own right and various facets of very different worlds and rules.
we can also find illustrations of the magnificent world
His secret projects are fun too. I really enjoyed tress
I would have said the lost metal but that came out last year lol
AMAGAD I MISSED THIS
Oh the blurb and genres is exactly my favorite!👀
I'm looking forward to buy new books for next year read list.
I plan to read 1 book per week next year. first I doubt myself because 52 books sounds a lot
but then I finished one novel in one sitting................
haha the cradle series I really enjoyed. the first book is a little slower, but then it really just never stops after that. Ghostwater is, for me, my favorite of the series. it really pops off after ghostwater. but it doesn't really slow down much either.
I also really enjoy a litRPG called he who fights with monsters. I'm not one to read litRPG books but this one sucked me in and its probably one of my favorite all time series'.
Whoop I put it in maybe the wrong section. These books are great. Queer series about werewolves, magic, pack, family and found families, politics, and lots of heart wrenching romance
Holiday time is reading time. Finally able to reread my favorite books. Happy Holidays everyone.
This corner looks cozy and pretty stylish! What a place to grab a book and read
It’s clear that my piles of books lying around on the floor look less classy :/
I had it remade from our old bookshelves.
The other half of my room is like that. I like to think of it as "scholarly" hahaha
I gave up paper books because of the mess. now, all digital and it's less heavy to carry in my backpack
<@&909661844698972160> this @orchid badger breaking rules
It’s kind of books and kind of shows, but did anyone see the new Percy Jackson tv show? It’s sooo good. Amazing what can happen when the author is actually involved.
RIGHT?! I love it so far, have you seen the 3rd ep yet?
3rd ep is my favorite so far!
Yep. It’s all so good. Did you see the Rick Riordan statue? He got crashed into by Grover 🤣
missed the statue but that's awesome
How gay
Very much gay
So gay that the brooks make rainbow streaks when they fly through the sky/j
Also there’s great disability rep!
Does anyone have a link to it online? I was actually curious about it not long ago
finished the final empire 🫡 everything is fine
The Mistborn saga?👀 what do you think of the book? I haven't read it personally and I'm very curious
Yes! I finished it and pretty much immediately started the second book so that’s my big endorsement there
Reeeeally enjoyed the first one, am moving through the second one faster than that.
I think it has some quirks just because it was written in 2006 (so some things don’t read well in 2024), but it’s a blast otherwise ~~also the first book I’ve finished in a Really long time ~~
I’m toning it down but I’m in Deep here
Adding it to my 2024 read list now! your endorsement surely works on me!!
[backreads this channel] aw, i missed the previous sanderson talk
Oh honey just wait. Era 2 of mistborn is so fun. I love the magic system in this series
The final book of era 2 is fantastic
i'm only on well of ascension! and suddenly very worried!!
the magic system is sooo nice for real but my friend was like 'the final empire is the happiest one!' and i'm just like. oh no
They are all good. Brandon just... Likes to make people a little bit sad sometimes
The lost metal made me cry
Though so did a few parts of the stormlight archive books
tfe got me twice on that front!!
Just wait lol. I really enjoy that series. The magic is just something really different and I really like it. Era 2 builds on it a lot better. Kind of steam punk noire. The main characters are great. The first 3 are fun but the following 4 are even better
When you're done with mistborn you may also enjoy the cradle series by will wight.
Oooh good to know, good to know!!! I plan to read stormlight eventually too (or at least - audiobooks, which are my go to rn)
I just started reading “Babel, or the Necessity of Violence” by Kuang. Just getting into it but it’s pretty great if you like alt-history sci-fi/fantasy. I also loved Doomsday Book, also an alt history sci fi. Coincidentally both take place at Oxford.
Did someone say Sanderson? 👀 our box of minis just came in the post. A complete set of all of them, two technically since my partner and I got one each. And we did the Year of Sanderson as well! The boxes were absolutely gorgeous. I use my Wit mousepad from the January box everyday at work.
Great book but so dense. Took me weeks to read! But if you like Kuang’s style you might want to check out the Poppy Wars. Infinitely darker but same style.
(Please ignore the tinsel) gorgeous black boxes with red paper inside.
WHOA NICE
slight (vague) well of ascension spoilers but on that note:
-playing stardew again while i wait for CI bug fixes
||-name the dog renoux
-using a reskin mod. at some point the mod broke. so my dog has been replaced with an impostor ||
I wanted the stormlight mini's so bad but husband said no lol
the leatherbound secret project books were beautiful
we got the way of kings in leatherbound too.
Personally I haven't read it but I admire the book cover illustrations
Thanks! I will check out her other books. I don’t mind the density. I also like that the story kind of dwells and revisits topics but with new perspectives as the character changes. I’m about half way through.
it makes you want to do it. I'll also get a Frieren figurine ( nothing to see , lol )
and Moash as a dartboard
this scene in particular cracked me up so much. I'm going to have to read the manga now that the shows over.
The series is still ongoing
I know I'm just impatient lol
just read this little novella I found on Amazon, and I swear its one of the funniest things ive ever read
if anyone wants to read it and talk about it please @ me, i was dying laughing
Audiobooks as a thing is a god send. These are most of the books I've listened to 2023
Hi! My friend has just released his first book of his series. It’s LGBTQ+ friendly, has a hard back cover option too and is on kindle! It can be found on Amazon and his next book of the series comes out in November 2024! Please have a look if you like fantasy, magic and pirates!
it sounds good!! I might check it out (after I finish the 20 other books I have piled up that I have to read still 😭 😂 )
maybe after I finish a few more I'll purchase it 👀 sounds really interesting tho!!! 💖
Have y’all read the graphic novel Squire?
Some of my students have as it’s in the provincial reading award this year. Most of them have really liked it. But they all say there’s room for a sequel.
Exactly
I need the sequel
There are so many possibilities!
I met the illustrator in person at nycc last year and she sad Husni and Basem liked each other! I know it!
My wife wrote a book! I'm so proud of her and ya'll should check it out! https://bookshop.org/p/books/symphony-of-the-sojourn-rowan-alexandria-bennett/21054055?ean=9798873197385
A ramshackle alliance of rogues and wizards, soldiers and revolutionaries managed to change the destiny of the Sojourn Sea, an archipelago that every nation of the Old World hopes to control. One problem: no one but them knows what actually happened. A brief window has opened: the adventurers have all assembled together to weave together their o...
I wanted to recommend a webtoon I found recently, it's not a book, but it is reading so I hope it's okay to share it here 😅 Described by the author as "kind of like Avatar but with star signs, a non-binary lead, and based on Celtic folklore" https://www.webtoons.com/en/fantasy/realta/list?title_no=3271
When the world was new, the twelve star signs descended to bless humanity with magic according to their date of birth. Fourteen worthy people, called the “Realta,” were given a star from each Sign that allowed them to receive prophecies of the future called “horoscopes” and summon great power to defeat the Fae: beings that tormented humanity. Ho...
I'm loving the art style and premise! Thanks for the suggestion, gonna binge-read this on my holiday!
I love reading classics and am currently hooked on Aphra Behn's "The City-Heiress".
Currently reading kingdom of the wicked series. Read kingdom of the wicked already
Now reading kingdom of the cursed
That series is 🤌🏼🤌🏼
I loved it
Still need to read Throne of the Fallen
Yes, a sequel but about Envy I think was it, been over a year since I read it 😄
Another one will be released this year as well, Throne of Secrets
I think the author continues to write about the princes of sin now
Oh that's so cool
I was thinking
While reading kingdom of the cursed
That she could write about the Princes in their perspextive
Hahaha, same though! I'm glad she's doing it

You can find me on tiktok as well with the same name 🙌🏼
Any book recommendations for someone who likes Isakai (overdone ik but I like em) Mc is Villian, Fantasy, Lgbtq+
Mc not a villain, but one of my favorite light novels, now a manga and anime, is 'Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon" by Hirukuma. And even though new characters are described boobs first mostly, it sounds like it's more making fun of the isekai harem tropes super prevalent at the time it was written, MC is very Ace.
I highly recommend Dog Nigga. It's a manga about a guy named Rex, a half man half dog on his quest for vengeance. Heavy stuff but there are plenty of comedy in it as well.
have you checked out LitRPG's before? I love the series "He who Fights with Monsters" and i recently read Mayor of Noobtown. Both are a fun read, but neither are villians. though Jason in he who fights gets pretty dark there for a bit.
No, I haven't
Thank you for the recommendation
And no I haven't
I'll give it a try
Currently on a re-read of HWFwM to get ready for the new book later this month, then gonna re-read Dungeon Crawler Carl
So excited for the next book! So is Clive's wife
Clive's wife is always excited for something new lol
Does anyone here read graphic novels?
I do!!
There my favorite thing to read
Mine too!
Do u have eny recommendations?!!
I've found a manga called yoki cats it's very cute!!
I'm also a fan of this beowulf Is graphic novel that was Illustrated by Gareth hinds it's a really well made
Im still reading the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. I almost finished them all. I love the series of books.❤️
I finished the poppy war trilogy by RF Kuang a could months ago and my life was altered.
I just bought This could be love from Lily Lucas and I'm reading Though Choices from Ava Reed at the moment ♥ I'm a bookaholic!
I'm currently reading Heroes of Olympus for the, like, 6th time in my life because Percy Jackson is my favourite book series 🫶🏻
I'm at Son of Neptune
Ken Follett Kingsbridge-Saga Part 4 of 5. I recommend reading them, they are awesome if you like historical novels.
Anyone have any recommendations similar to Alice Oseman's book Solitaire?
I'm almost done but keep hesitating to finish it cause I don't want it to end. 🥲
She has a few others like a radio silence. And she wrote a couple of companion books for Heartstopper.
Thank 🙏 I was actually thinking ab getting radio silence so now it's a must 😩
Reading this on baking book for college (baking student) and it's so weird cause my homework is pretty much just reading recipes sometimes 🤷
That is so cool! it's equal part recipe and theory in one book! hehe
this reminds me of The Science of Cooking book by Stuart Farrimond, I rarely cook but I love the cooking theory and explanations in that book!
I'll have to see if my school library has that one!? They have a big cooking book section!!
Yes!! I was stressing at first cause it starts out just hammering out history and all these new terms but then it just switched up to this format which is refreshing lol
Omggg that sounds amaazing
yeh definitely check it out! The book is also full of illustrations that will make you hungry heheheheh!
Is your college book also available for general public? I wanna see if i can find one here! hehe
Dang 😭 that's my least favorite part of the book lol everything I read it i wanna bake and get hungry hahha
I think so, it's a book called on baking: a textbook of baking and pastry fundamentals (3rd edition update) it's a little expensive but it's like 700 pages and pretty informative on basics of baking, running a kitchen, recipes, and basics of a kitchen
I got it free with my school credit luckily so I saved like 100 dollars 🥳
woaah super lucky! yeah found the book but I need to save for a while before i can buy it😆 in my shopping cart now nonetheless heheheheh
i've got a massive google drive folder of cookbooks
there's i think 40 of them in there, all DRM free so I can share it with anyone i want
That's fire 🔥🔥 I've been saving up for those themed cook books. You know the Minecraft or studio Ghibli themed ones. I got a premium acc at a bookstore that gets me 20% off 😩🤞
As a die hard Ghibli fan I've been waiting so long to cook Ghibli food 🤤
Speaking of recipes tho
I bought these three recipes at a convention. They recipes are on the back so if anyone wants the back details lmk 😩🤞
I’m gonna go back to reading Lessons in Chemistry now
Yoooo this is super coool!
Yess their booth was so cute, and they're decently easy to read
Same! Why does the food in Ghibli movies always look so good? I told a friend this and she just thougt I was weird lol
I’d like details!
i need help, somethings driving me crazy. I live in America and in high school or middle school i forget which (im 39 right now so take that into account) I remeber reading a book about a girl named D..ana? Diana? Something like that and it was about her and i believe two children possibly siblings and Dana trying to take care of them...i believe they were either on the homeless or on the ruin....i cant remember the name of the book and its driving me NUTS, does anyone have any inkling what it might be?
i'm not sure what book you're talking about but have you tried something like the whatsthatbook reddit? someone there might know
I can send photos of the other sides when I get back home from school in 4 hours 👌
Ok!
Cool thanks!
Been reading this book A discovery of witches. Urban Fantasy very fun stuff!
Im waiting for a signed and number copy of a book Im gonna read
OMG the cover art looks so cool
Can I share a poll I made about a book idea I had?
Anyone reading some new books for the new year?
Me! I just got Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke, so I'm starting my read list this year with that!
The book is super thick though, here's hoping I can finish them in 2 or 3 months!
Oh nice! I'm reading a book called Gods of the Wyrdwood by RJ Barker. It's pretty good so far.
I read it a few months ago! It's amazing, I really liked the way it's written (the footnotes, the appendices,...) I highly recommend it 😍
What is the genre of the book?
Fantasy! But with a big historical background, it's like an uchronia 🥰
I just started reading "The Pairing" by Casey McQuiston and I honestly think they are a genius at writing. Second of their books i've picked up and in loooove with both
Oh nice! It's always satisfying to read a really good book!
Omg i'm getting more excited now! I'm just a couple of pages in and I agree with you, the way it's written feels refreshing and easy to read!👀 ❤️
There was this post I found on Facebook talking about people using AI chats to summarize and annotate books for them:
My response:
I just finished the red rising trilogy
3 chapters away from the end of the last book, I felt like throwing the whole thing away and never picking up another book ever again
It’s almost 3AM and I’ve been on a rollercoaster of a ride
If any of you guys can pirate this trilogy or buy the books 2nd hand, defo do it
Or better yet, ask your local library if they have it or can get it. Don’t pirate books. Authors don’t get a great return as it is.
i think the reason they said to pirate it is bc they don't want to support the author
(It’s because pierce brown is a terrible human, truly horrible. If others choose to buy, that’s their prerogative. But personally I don’t like to give my money to someone evil Lol)
I don’t hold the reservations I have about the artist against the art tho
Then please preface with that, because I do hold the artist against the art. I’ll give these a pass.
Okay
One of these is not like the others:
That is one fluffy book right there
do i see the sprayed edge daughter of the moon goddess books?? theyre so gorgeous!!
Wow, those are beautiful books (especially the tailed one)
Please tell us what the middle collection is.
Yesss they are, that little section is all sue lynn tan’s books 🥰
The middle ones next to my cat are a day of fallen night and priory of the orange tree (the big back books are Samantha Shannon), the next ones are daughter of the moon goddess, heart of the warrior son, and tales from the celestial kingdom (all sue lynn tan), then it’s the wrath and the dawn duology, what monstrous gods and then throne of secrets (I’m still waiting for throne of the fallen to come)
Actually the page classics at the top are my fav, those covers are so gorgeous but it is like an insane hunt to find books from that publisher that are sold in the UK Lol
Thanks, I'll look those up!
<@&909661844698972160>
One piece spoilers, but also, manga bookcase
cant stop staring at every single one of your book collection and also CHOPPER IS SO CUTE🥹
The chopper is flocked as well, fuzzy guy 😄
I finished Sunrise on the Reaping yesterday, now I reread The Hunger Games (i died inside and need to find connections between the books to feel something)
I think Sunrise might be one of my favorite books she’s written
It's really great, I finished Mockingjay two days ago, I'm not okay 😭
I feel you learning the victors backstories broke meee
When Haymitch ran to Merrilee calling her Maysilee 😭😭😭
Bruh all of Beetee and his backstory
Oh don't get me started on Ampert 😭
Beetee saying No to a Hunger Games with the Capitol kids at the end of Mockingjay got a whole new meaning because of it
I bought a Kindle Colorsoft for Christmas last year and I love her so much!! No problems with mine and she is a beaut. 🥰
I like to read MM books and I reread allot. Lmao
Lynn Hagen is a fav of mine
I bought a Kindle recently too and got Unlimited for free for 3 months, I found a book series that sounded pretty nice, started reading the first one and realized it's basically a Hunger Games x Percy Jackson x Faeries fanfiction xD
But since I never dnf a book, I keep reading, it's trash but it's entertaining (even though the insta-love made me want to throw up because what heck)
Any tips on how to get started on Summer Reading?
What exactly do you mean if I may ask? Is that a thing kind of? Like reading Christmas romance stories in December?
I’m not quite sure how to describe it
Is that the thing where you try to read as many books as you can over the summer? Like they do at school sometimes?
That's interesting, never heard of it before 🤔
Though I always have a reading slump in summer haha
They used to have a challenge in primary school to read over the summer break in Australia. I used to cheese it and count seperate volumes of manga towards my tally lmao. The school librarians had no idea what I was doing...
But no one else in my grade would enter, so there was never much point competing
Ohh, interesting! I never had something like that in Germany, but remembering my class, I would've been the only one reading any book over summer break xD
Also, mangas count in my opinion, it's still reading even if there are pictures 😌
I still would like to read physical book better. Have no idea why but ebook never makes me want to read more😂
Totally get that, I only bought a Kindle so I can practice Spanish by reading Spanish books (physical copies cost more than 20€), the rest I always buy as a physical copy xD
Hello! What books are y'all reading this summer?
I just got my hands on the latest volume of Go with the Clouds and an anthology manga by Ryoko Kui (the Dungeon Meshi author), so they're what I'll be reading next
Tho I did also promise a friend I'd read Onyx Storm so... well... I'll get to that... eventually
What are you reading/ planning to read atm? 👀
The Licanius Trilogy by James Islington. Just started the first book yesterday!
Oooh, I haven't heard of that one - what's it about?
It's about a man who has these powers of a godlike race that were killed before he was born, and having those powers is very bad. So he basically escapes his school to learn more about his powers, which breaks a tenant of the treaty. That is what I got from it so far. It's been a solid read so far. Might post a spoiler free synopsis later once I'm done.
Working my way through massive amount that is the Anita Blake series
Awesome! I had to look it up, I never heard of that series before. How far are you into it?
Book 4
I set myself a goal to read at least a book a month this year to get back into reading. I ended up reading this in just a day because I couldn't put it down. Sapphic YA romance and it was so adorable. I was crying at the end of it.
I'm going to try and read multiple books this month since it's pride month and I have a lot of queer lit in my reading pile.
Sorry, got caught up looking for examples of Kaoru Mori going way too hard on the detail department in her series A Bride's Story (Otoyomegatari). Consider this an endorsement if you like pretty pictures and historical slice of life
She also draws impeccable cats lmao
https://www.checkpleasecomic.com
I am SCREAMING that I finally got to buy the two volumes of Check, Please!, by Ngozi Ukazu
This story got me through the first months of 2020 and it made me cry SO FRIGGIN’ MUCH!!!
Follow Eric "Bitty" Bittle, a former Georgia figure skating champion, vlogger extraordinaire, and master baker as he plays hockey at Samwell University.
That is
a ✨ beautiful ✨ name!
Have you read any of Alexis Hall’s other works?
No — I was tooting my own horn, actually. 😅
Since the anime's been delayed, lemme recommend the manga for Witch Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirahama while we wait
!
I am once again recommending a manga for its impeccable, detailed art - tho Witch Hat also has a great story about a world where magic is believed to be a trait inherited at birth. The protagonist Coco, a normal non-magic girl, discovers this is actually not true at all, and is thrown into the world of witches as she learns magic and questions why the world is the way it is. The world design is fantastic, and you can clearly see all the love and attention given even to minor background characters
Omg my boyfriend has also his eye on this, he's reading the manga, loving every creative detail on the way the artist draw the panels, now waiting for the anime
But as a hopeless romantic that I am, the first thing I asked was "Does it have romance?" And his answer didn't satisfy me
Depends on how much you want to read between the lines
Romance would defs not be a main genre tag for the series, but there are... subtexts... to certain characters.
And just outright text in some instances lmao
.....HUH
There is a whole side series about the two main guys who share a house cooking together - make of that what you will
Ngl I need to ask my boyfriend about this now 🤣
Forget alchemy was made in the kitchen, I'm starting to think good world-building is made in a kitchen instead XD
Meanwhile, historians be like:
“They were roommates.”
I saw this from a tumblr post when me and my friend was discussing about The Song of Achilles🤣
If we're talking cooking manga tho, you gotta mention Dungeon Meshi (eng: Delicious in Dugeon). I'm sure a bunch you have already seen the first season on Netflix, but I would highly recommend the manga too (and author Ryoko Kui's accompanying artbook Daydream Hour). Homegirl knows her fantasy and how to spin a good twist on old tropes, plus it's pretty short at only 14 volumes long.
Basically, a broke-ass DnD party is trying to get to a dungeon's depths as quickly as possible to rescue a team member before they get digested, so they're gonna have to eat what they fight along the way if they're going to stand any chance of making it. Hijinks ensue, as does the existential horror
also sapphic ladies
-# I wanted to show off some money shots from later in the series cause the art really improves as the series goes along, but they were all spoilers ;;
I consume, therefore I am: Sunrise at the Reaping for Kindle popped up for less than R$20 and I’m like, “It’s the translation, but dang!,
gotta complete my collection.”
-# Besides, it’s the story of my second favorite alcoholic.
-# (The first one is Semeru. 🦈 )
I cried so hard
It will hurt so much
Holy moly, I just realized that I bought 5 books in the last fortnight!
• 2 Check, Please! volumes
• 2 Hunger Games novels
• Living with Him (by Toworu Miyata, which has just arrived!)
-# I better upgrade my reading nook.
-# A couple of years ago I got a brand new Kindle Paperwhite during a helluva sale and I should be using it far more than I am right now.
Does anyone here own a Kindle?
Yep, I do
Me too
Finished Living with Him,
and here’s a spoiler:
A bit of non-fiction as a palate cleanser: Who’s in Charge?, by Michael Gazzaniga.
-# I added it to my wishlist some time ago and it popped up with a nice discount during Prime Day.
If anyone is in the mood for some light, amusing fiction, I’m reading this series right now by D. E. Stevenson. They were published back in the 1930s-40s but the humour is timeless. All about quirky characters and hilarious happenings in small town England in the 30s.
I’m reading pride and prejudice by Jane Austen rn xD it’s a classic and I love the characters so far (particularly the MC is so sassy)
highly recommend people to try this one if they are into romance :3
Seconding! My friend made me read too many rubbish romantasy books so I read this as a palate cleanser lmao
Jane Austen writes in such a gossipy way
It’s a classic for a reason.
-# Trends come and go.
-# Hot tea is forever. 🫖
Once again recommending a hyper-detailed manga: Magus of the Library by Mitsu Izumi.
Like books? Want to know more about them then you'd ever need to in a fantasy setting? Then this may be the series for you!
i put this in my to-read library, im still trying to catch up with Witch Hat Atelier and re-reading Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint hehehe
aaand speaking of ORV, the novel is releasing todaaaaay🥹
kyaaa we get to see Myne growing up huh??? so excited🥹
I stopped reading halfway, got distracted by another series lol, i think this is a sign to pick it back up heheh
Plus some 🫢 let's just say the gremlin has romance in her future
I just have a really hard time getting them in Aus - I gotta import them from America, so I'm way behind (still in Part 2) 😭
I could read the ebooks but
I'm upset that that 'In the land of Leadale' has been on hiatus for a while now
I feel you bestie🫂
Since your in Ozland, wouldn't it be easier to get them straight from Japan? They have so much merch for the series over there
XD legit - I import artbooks from japan cause it doesn't matter too much if they're in japanese
If you just want to read the and then collect the physical copies later. I recommend J-Novel club. They update chapter by chapter as they translate the books. And it's much better than trying to find a decent mtl (machine translation)
Also I've been reading Apothecary Diaries at https://archive.org/details/the-apothecary-diaries-light-novel-series/The Apothecary Diaries_ Volume 1
Im so happy to see fellow manga readers!
My friends are all cringe and only watch anime or read isekai, so I'm glad I can share my sleeper hits here at least
No bc that's so true is this a universal experience? Lol
Im picking up some manga tomorrow need to catch up on jujutsu kiasen and kaiju no. 8 (I dont watch anime much and I read physical copies not online versions) sadly so many people spoiled jjk a fair bit
Must be XD. I read and loved Vinland Saga like a decade ago and the few people discussing it were like 'only middle aged men like this series'
And so me, a teenage girl, was very aghast. Flash forward to the anime, everyone loves Vinland Saga now!
How far are you in JJK? I was collecting the volumes, but then it started getting kinda kooky lmao
Volume 25 Im picking up vol 26 tomorrow and the rest is not out yet
Isekai is my favorite genre for light novels. But I'll read a lot of others too
Got a nice surprise today:
A great friend gifted me Thrown Off The Ice, by Taylor Fitzpatrick, and I’m gonna need several boxes of tissues because I’m gonna cry
SO FRIGGIN’ HARD
Love it. Have every book what is avaiable. Waiting for the last few releases.
So jealous, yes I have the digital version but we all know physical copies are the best. I just love the convenience of having 100 plus books with me anywhere I go 😂
I need to have a book in my hands, otherwise i can't enjoy it. I tried it with an ebook from a friend and i to a 100% hated it.
I just started reading this; it is free right now if you are subscribed to kindle unlimited.
It is very interesting
Ohh, have you read the first trilogy too? I loved it and am waiting until next year when Throne of Nightmares is out to read this trilogy in one go 🥰
Good evening :}
Oh, this is actually my first book by this author; is this not the first book of some series?
I’m sorry, I’m not familiar for I just started reading a couple days ago (I’m still on chapter 2 at the moment).
But so far, I am liking the writing style and the world building so perhaps I might continue to read the rest of the series
Oh, yes, it starts with the Kingdom of the Wicked trilogy, the characters from Throne of the Fallen are introduced there ☺️
peeepsssss i'm looking for any romcom novel recommendation if you have any! i'm trying to read intermezzo by sally rooney rn and i just cant read it continously, it's giving me blue feeling so i want to read it with a romcom on the side. any recommendation??? 👀👀👀👀
I don't know if it's romcom per se, but of all the romantasy stuff my friend has made me read, I found the Emily Wilde series very enjoyable. It's about a stick-in-the-mud scholar of fae chasing leads out in the wilderness while her useless but charming co-worker follows her around - Emily and Wendell have some pretty funny banter.
-# but I am also a biased academic so I get a lot of enjoyment out of the stuff they go through cause it makes me go 'omg just like my job fr fr' lmao
- we could be so good by cat sebastian
- get a life chloe brown by talia hibbert
- red white and royal blue by casey mcquiston
- very secret society of irregular witches by sangu mandanna
- role playing by cathy yardley (the title sounds spicy but it’s not)
I second Red, White and Royal Blue, I adored that book and the movie was so well-made too!
When in Rome by Sarah Adams was pretty enjoyable ☺️
eyyy thank you so much for the recco friends! will look into this 😍
I’ve read We could be so good and the sequel! have not done get a life…. Done red white and royal blue but not secret Society or role playing. Thanks for the recommendations!!!!
lol no… the movie was only acceptable due to the plot being so easy to watch 🤣🤣🤣🤣but they did not do justice to the… uh… book
but politically speaking it’s amazing to think that the plot conclusion in red white and royal blue was plausible back when she wrote it but now I feel like it was just a fantasy……
Hey i have a book recommendation.. 📚😊
It actually reminds me of coral island a lil bit! It's a great cozy read! ready for fall coming in 😊🍂🍁 if you read it I'm hear for the updates 😊
This was a great one! Loved it.
Ace! Did you read the 2nd one?
Sadly no, waiting until it comes out in paperback. I work in a bookstore and spend way too much money as it is.
Well its a great story but I personally enjoyed the spell shop more but I get you! You can never have enough books lol
I have read the hard copy of both. excellent books
I am reading Secret of secrets by Dan Brown and on kindle I am reading book 1 A breaker of realms. by Jasmine Young.
I published my first children’s book for anyone interested 🥰 illustrated and written by me https://amzn.to/43HFOJS

I am reading Aeldari series of Warhammer 40k- Path of Eldar
does anyone has recommendation of good audiobook? i managed to make my partner hooked listening to audiobook with Project Hail Mary (which is a high bar i know lol) so now we're looking for more!
Welll I don't know if you guys want to stay in sci-fi but I know red rising by Pierce Brown is highly praised. I know many more depending on the genre you'd like
he's fine with any genre!
Alright so I mostly picked sci-fi and fantasy since you spoke of your partner liking the project hail Mary and my brother who is very picky about what he read also liked it. So I'm picking books with what I know my brother liked and hoping it fit for you two as well.
The boneships by RJ Barker
Empire Of silence by Christopher Ruocchio
Anything by James j butcher is pretty good
The ultimate Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy by Douglas Adams
A time of dread by John Gwynne
Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson
So I have lots of others (also romance and thrillers but I didn't know if that was your type of thing) but I kept it to what's the most popular and known since it's most likely they will be in audiobook. Unfortunately most less popular books don't have audiobooks yet. So yeah hope you can find something in there ^^
thanks for the recco!!!! we'll check it out hihi excited
feel free to share your fav thriller audiobook too! romance is more my thing haha and I prefer reading for that just so i can imagine the character voice myself 😊
James J Butcher is the son of author Jim Butcher. I've heard their writing style is somewhat similar, but in either case Jim is a highly regarded veteran with a larger library. So I would apply the "anything by him is pretty good" but louder
Dresden Files is basically the Urban Fantasy series, though the first few books aren't quite as good as anything after. I was told this while reading them and thought that sounded a bit silly because they were already fairly good, but it's true
I can confirm the rest of the list is good or at least that I've heard good things
For Mistborn/Brandon Sanderson: Mistborn is a popular entry point to his books, but if it doesn't appeal to your partner I highly recommend looking at his other books for something that does
They can be pretty different, but I will say that any Sanderson book can be expected to have incredible worldbuilding and a highly climactic final act
Also, if you're not aware, most of his books are part of the Cosmere shared universe. Standalone stories set on different worlds, but which contribute to a larger shared narrative. There are characters who have cameos or bald-facedly appear in multiple stories/worlds, especially Hoid, who appears in one manner or another in almost every major Cosmere story
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War is one book on the short list of novels that are directly improved by being in the audiobook format. Good book, better audiobook.
-# and perish any thought of the in-name-only hollywood adaptation
omg i love world war z the movie, now im curious about the audiobook!
(i hope i don't sound silly saying that i know the movie has some kind of reputation but i love it, it's amazing)
It's even more removed from the source material than I Am Legend
Really???? wow okay now im even more curious
The Expanse by James SA Corey is some of the best fiction I've ever read, highly recommended. If you've seen the unfinished Amazon TV adaptation, definitely do yourself a favor and read the books
really appreciate your review on the recco Andras 🤩 yeah I'm curious about Sanderson because lots of people say his worldbuilding is good and the last one I'm really hooked to is......LoTR and that's from a long time ago
Wait the TV series is unfinished? We tried watching first episode and i didnt get hooked hehe
Yeah iirc Jeff Bezos was pretty instrumental to the show getting greenlit and made at all, so when he and others left the company the show got dropped
and then one of the main actors got outed as a sex pest
but i know it's something i need to sit down and let it cooked, but i need instant dopamine hit when i try watching the show
I'm not really a romance consumer but I would say The Expanse has some pretty good romance as well
I haven't read or seen Hail Mary yet, but from what I know about it and The Martian, your partner may enjoy the Culture books by Iain M. Banks. They're much more futuristic in terms of sci-fi, and more "soft" sci-fi rather than "hard" sci-fi (how plausibly realistic the technology is), but generally very intellectual/philosophical.
Basically, each book in the series is pretty much completely standalone (aside from happening roughly in chronological order by release). The titular Culture are a post-scarcity semi-anarchist utopia consisting of humanoid races and managed by super-intelligent artificial intelligences. The main themes of the series are the dilemmas that an idealistic, more-advanced civilization faces in dealing with smaller, less-advanced civilizations that do not share its ideals, and whose behavior it sometimes finds barbaric.
I've heard that the first book is one of the harder ones to start with for some people, as its one of the darkest in the series, so it may be worth you or your partner looking at more info to pick one to start with
My favorite is the 2nd book, Player of Games, where the Culture recruits one of its greatest game players/scholars to travel to a fledgling civilization whose society and government is centered around the largest and most complex game anyone in the Culture has ever seen
A detailed structure of the game is given, though many of the specifics necessarily must only be gesticulated at
but one of the incredible things about this book in my opinion is that Player of Games came out in 1988
Video games barely even existed yet, and Banks was writing in detail about VR sports, internet-connected dream-gaming, and tabletop 4X wargames that require the use of computer assistance and genetically engineered playing pieces
I hope you will try it soon! We try it because I know my partner want to read, so he tried but the reading activity just didn't stick with him. Project Hail Mary audiobook really helps him, it's his first audiobook, and he just smile laugh happy so I want to find other one for him 🎉
with me, I like audiobook but, i end up reading and listening to audiobook 😂😂😂😂 i mean i can just listen to it, but it takes more energy for me if that makes sense. and sometimes i need to rewind if i missed something. so i just stick with reading now hehe
Absolutely
I like audio books because I can do other things while listening, but I have to be mindful that whatever I'm doing doesn't become a distraction
aaaa im envious but also im happy with how my brain work ❤️ Andras, let me know if you have other recommendations. I love love love how you recommend stuff!!!!
Well, not a whole lot else, I had to think about it
If you have an interest in alien life/intelligences or interstellar colonization, I would recommend the Children of Time series by Adrian Tchaikovsky and the Semiosis series by Sue Burke. Both series are fascinating explorations of the biology and psychology of non-human sapients, with new ones explored in each book as the stories progress
If you're interested in high concept sci-fi mindfucks, Book of the New Sun and Hyperion Cantos are incredible.
BotNS, by Gene Wolfe, is kinda-sorta one big book, which he wrote before publishing, but it was published over the course of a few smaller books
It's a dying earth story that's sort of fantasy-medieval on the surface, but like many entries in this genre actually exists in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi setting. This story has strong biblical parallels + a christ analogue, creatures both bizarre and totally alien, and time travel.
I'm not someone who re-consumes media terribly often, usually not without the passing of years in-between, but when I finished Book of the New Sun, I was just floored. I re-read the final book immediately. It's an experience for sure
the Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons also heavily involves time travel, but its... uh, complicated. I don't elaborate on BotNS's time travel because spoilers—I don't elaborate upon Hyperion's because paragraphs
The Hyperion Cantos and Endymion are sort of a duology. HC is two books, and then Endymion is another 2 books after a 200 year time skip. The Cantos are individually a much better pair of books than the Endymion books, but the Endymion books really do add a lot to the overall story and narrative.
I actually have a lot of thoughts about the Hyperion Cantos as a series and on the individual books
but I'll keep it short by showing you this image I drew to try to visualize the time travel nonsense after I finished reading
White is the normal timeline, and each colored line is a different entity traveling through time
and I forgot a couple things
(Red is the Shrike. Yeah he kinda just does what he wants.)
@potent gorge
Oh there's also House of Leaves. This book is not audiobook compatible. I haven't finished it myself yet because of that, but I checked it out of the library at one point. Very interesting book.
There's an insane doom mod/level called MyHouse.wad which is very heavily based on it. Very incredible project.
here's a spread from House of Leaves that should quickly reveal why it can't be put into audiobook form and still retain what makes it special
I LOVE Hyperion 💜
oh wow that spread looks so cool 😮
That was such a wild read. I admit I didn't finish all the appendices but it was so interesting. Though for some reason my copy doesn't have the different coloured fonts!
I've been reading the Apothecary Diaries books recently, and also slowly going through the Expanse audiobooks - the latter is a really good sci-fi series that, minus any alien entities, I could really see our future looking like (for better or worse)
If anyone likes that kind of book that the book itself is an experience I'd recommend S by Doug Dorst and J. J. Abrams
It's a book in a book. Basically it's a library book that two people have each borrowed and written in the margins. So you have the story of the book but also the story of the two people who had borrowed it in the margins. There's many things in it like postal cards and pictures added
I don't know if I ask this in the Music or in the book section but does anyone have songs that they listen to when they read that they could recommend?
I get distracted a lot when I want to read and sometimes having instrumental music on in the background helps.
But I've been struggling a bit in finding new ones to listen to. 😅
i love this Andras haha when I'm done reading this I'll share with you my understanding of their time travel lol
you're the fourth person recommending Expanse, and makes me really really really want to dive into that universe. maybe i should just read the novel or play the game when it's out
hold up is this jj abrams the director or a different jj abrams?
i just pull any one of lofi girl playlist haha whats your usual one purple?
Sometimes it's the Lofi girl playlist and sometimes I go looking for instrumentals of songs that kinda match the vibe of what I'm reading like Enemies to Lovers Playlist or one hour long adventure themed songs on YouTube.
ooooo yeah thats good idea never thought of looking for the genre playlist! yeah im super basic :""" just searching "chill reading music no AI"
The game is interesting and hopefully will be good, but it is a spin-off so I'd recommend the source material first
Oh, you're already reading them? 😁
it's on my list to be next to read hehe I love the name hyperion
Yeah it's the director. Him and an author got together to write this book
ok- i hope it is good place to post it - its 1st chapter of book i working on - it is rough translation - english is not my first language so please excuse my language but https://ellipsus.com/read/4Qa19Oja0EUIKQ6ZIi6eX0/01?theme=wasteland hope i am not wasting yours time
its kinda cyberpunk (earky days) and its look like detective story but it will change ( i have 11 chapters but not in english)
oh and now i should say people mention murders as warning
eeeeeeee thank you for sharing Ison!!! I'm gonna read this on the weekend
Currently trying to finish Circe, I really love her character in this book 🤣
the murderbot diaries and the locked tomb series are both really good
I just read Circe! And I had book club on it, we discussed it! Let me know what you think
I LOVED. The finale with …. Her….
When she… well don’t want to spoil it lol
omgomgomg sounds like something interesting is happeniiing
I'm still at the part where she left the island under pasiphae's request and super loving it so far!
i'll be back on monday with my review HEHEH

OKAY I've completed the book! I get what you mean by the finale now🤣
I kinda guessed she will make that decision ever since her first existensial crisis ||after the entire scylla ordeal||. The open ending feels too vague for meee tho i want moar ||I WANNA KNOW MORE ABOUT TELEGONUS TOO|| AAAA
You guessed that earlier than me! I didn’t see it coming lol
I wasn’t familiar with the actual ending so when it hit me I was like… omg lol
By today’s standards that’s an interesting family tree 😂😂😂
|| I really liked the way she finally stood up to her dad and denounced him ||
I was only thinking out loud at the beginning, like it would be cool for her to have that question answered for her and then it happened🤣
I read a bit about circe beforehand and yep cant agree more about their family tree situation! I was curious to see how the writer are gonna explore that part, but the current conclusion is also not that bad🙌
OMGGGG YEEEEE!!! honestly i love her character development and inner monologues, like we can really see her personality shift due to circumstances :'3
👀
My mind of channel 🙂
feel free to update your current read or just rant about books!
Will do thank you 🙂
What books does everyone love reading?
I love true crimes, suspense, horror 😄 I read A Deadly Game last week, bih. Bad editing job. so distracting, thankfully the storyline is interesting so I just read it 📚
Read A Simple Favor, didnt watch the movie. Love Blake Lively. The book is okay. 3stars ⭐️
is it romance?
Kinda like suspense/ mystery
aah right, mystery is your forte
sometimes I'm confused with mystery/detective. How can someone sees/read the clues?
what makes you say "wait, this feels odd"?
Nah usually you just find out along with the characters which is nice. Because it feels like youre there with them 😄
@smoky idol its great and the illustrations inside are all drawn by clive him self they are awesome.
Thats awesome!
Currently reading A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara 🙂 It's actually more of a re-read. First time I read it was back in 2015.
So happy someone is using this channel😂 I havent read that one! Im also re-reading a book. I havent finished 2 books that I started some weeks ago tho😪
Was glad to see this channel! Haha! Books are such good company.
Agreed
wow i checked on goodreads and A Little Life has more than 27k reviews! I’ve aready added it on my tbr. God knows when Im ever gonna finish all my tbr😂 but Im excited to see what the book is about
It's a great read. Trigger warning though, it can get quite depressing. It delves on depression, trauma, and self-harm.
I love reading high fantasy, but I enjoy contemporary fiction from time to time. I have a soft spot for coming-of-age as well. It also depends on my mood, really. Haha
What books do you like?
Yeah totally! I read this and that but mostly true crimes, horror, murder mysteries or thriller. I grew up reading harry potter and since then, Ive been kinda looking for books similar to that as well
Ooooh
I also got into thriller, crime books etc in my pre-20s hahaha
Have you heard of The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss?
No, whats that one about?👀
It's of a fantasy genre. One of my favorites, actually. So it's the first book of a trilogy called The Kingkiller Chronicle
It also involves magic and being in a school hahaha if you want something Harry Potter like
but the magic system there is different
it follows a certain set of rules and principles. it's kinda "scientific" in some ways. It's pretty cool, imo.
The narrative is told like in a storytelling format by the main character, Kvothe.
You might find it a little slow at first, but just keep going. You'll get to the "hook" 😄
Oh so cool! 😱 Im adding that to my goodreads tbr!
Yeah I love harry potter but it has some plot holes tbh. It still has a special place on my heart tho lol☺️ but yeah! thank you for the suggestion. Sounds so cool!
Yeah, there's 2 books out of the trilogy already, and 1 side story book. The 3rd one we've been waiting for so many years now hahaha
Happy to share!
Oh wow! So its not finished! 👀 thats super exciting
I remember that being the exciting part about harry potter
Haha yeah, I remember the release of that last book. People lining up in the bookstores.
It was pretty intense. Back when social media wasn't as big, the marketing was still pretty good.
Yeah!! It was intense!😂
Anyone here read interactive novels? 😁
No 👀 that sounds amazing though. Especially horror interactive ones
Hmm.. I consider it a game
I don't remember if there's a horror one or not, some of them are romance, fantasy, adventure kind of game
Try looking around on Choices of Games and Hosted Games in website/ios/android
Cool thanks!
Personally I love one called Wayhaven Chronicles
I've play it multiple times, re-read the story again n again, choosing different options
It's fun 😄
Ur welcome

@unkempt geode name of the wind and the rest of kingkiller chronicles are on my bookshelf! Those are my next reads after I finish the memory sorrow and thorn series. First one is called the dragonbone chair by Tad Williams. Have you read it?
My husband has read them and is still waiting for the next one which apparently has been in the works for awhile now.
Whoaa that's a lot
I read evertree inn sometime ago
Haven't tried the 2nd part tho
Dragonbone, I think I haven't read it, I'll check it, thankssss

Has anyone read The Poppy War here?
@unkempt geode no 😔
@unkempt geode the name of the wind is also sitting on my bookshelf just waiting to be read when I get more free time, so let me know if you think its a good read.
@bitter jungle Hi! I enjoyed reading the book! But it still depends on what kind of fantasy books you're into. 😅
Thanks
You should try The Poppy War, I created the cover for the Indonesian version lol
I definitely have to look into it and I’d love to see the cover art you drew!!
lol
Yes haha, and the second book is coming next month
😆
That’s honestly stunning
yes that's the one haha
I can’t draw at all so it’s always incredible to see the work of people as talented as you
@bitter jungle Thank you so much! Glad to hear
I read several synopsis, it honestly sounds like a book that has great source material for a game, like the Witcher series lol -- plus the asian influence sounds fun!
now you got me curious about it
I’m still trying to fill the void that game of thrones left so now I’m curious too.
Yeah the story is darkkk
So far is very interesting but I havent get to finish it yet
Gotta love a fantasy series with a seriously intricate plot.
Damn now i want to buy that for my collection as well
Oh damn @quaint swan I was eyeing this cover! It's awesome!!!
@unkempt geode thank you!! 😄😄
Look what I found 👀
oooh, that looks really interesting!
I really want to buy a copy just for the cover! I finished the trilogy last month and it's so good!
Anybody read Mexican Gothic wanna share their thoughts?
the book was good, folks. you should give it a read
I’m going to see if the library is open today (I’m in the middle of quarantine county) and if it is I’m going to need some book recommendations 😊 starting with anything I saw above!
i have a copy of mexican gothic i see so many people praise the book so going to try and read it this month if i get through my arcs for this month
the poppy war is amazing! im so jealous of that cover! i have the illumicrate hardbacks which are gorgeous but those illustration have me tempted to make a collection ahah
Book recs? I'm a fan of Madeline Miller's writing so Circe and Song of Achilles are naturally top of my list. For something a little different, try The Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko.
Figured you guys might like a pic of my Rick riordan collection
