see, i bought the debut on day of release, and while it absolutely CRUSHES, i'm not a fan of the production on it. the guitar tones are not quite sharp enough, and they lose some of the emphasis on nasty riffing. but it has Eeyore and Get This on, and when i was a kid going to see them live i loved getting rowdy to the fast stuff!

Iowa is just... you can tell they all HATED each other, there's so much tension and anger in there. and the drumming is on another level—at the time, i was into a lot of death and black metal, and i'd never heard any drum parts written like that before. aggressive, but fluid, no just blastbeats all the way.

plus, Disasterpiece is an INSANE song to play along to!

thing is, Joey was a pioneer—at the time, the most mainstream act with prominent double kick was Fear Factory, and Slipknot outsold them by MILLIONS of records. you can genuinely track an uptick in the sales of double pedals after '99, and that was all Joey. he made aggressive drumming acceptable and cool in a way no-one had managed before—sure, there were far faster players at the time (look at the stuff Steve Asheim and Nick Barker were doing) but Joey was doing that shit at major festivals and on MTV2!

see, i like Kevin Paradis—his philosophy is MORE NOTES but he's capable of playing ANYTHING you throw at him, rather than just being a blast bludgeoner (he did an incredible Kriegsmaschine cover a while back). but then i play in a bunch of grind bands, and that's all about the wall of noise.

you ever seen Hellhammer play, either in Mayhem or Arcturus? that dude knows how to make fast footwork feel weird and jazzy

plus if your legs hurt, you need to switch to ankle/heeltoe tech ;)

can highly recommend the Pearl P932 if you're looking for a cheap way to try longboards. they're single chain drive, so they have a little lash and latency when you're really cranking out 16ths, but they're every bit as good as Trick Dominators (i own a set of both and the Pearl pedals with Ontrigger modules are what i use in my 260bpm grind band)

Axis and Czarcie and those other longboard brands are a huge ripoff

Yamaha do a great cheap direct drive set, but shortboards only, sadly

get yourselves a cup of tea and settle in for this one. it's got some heft to it.

AOTD: Big silly fun goth time! Grave Pleasures are a Finnish goth rock band whose singer, Kvohst, has pedigree—he's been a member of Hexvessel, <code>, DHG... the lad can belt it out. On this record, Motherblood, he explores nuclear anxiety, with almost every song using nuclear detonation as a metaphor for something (or simply talking about how disastrous such a detonation would be for us all.)

It's a catchy, riffy album with some great singalong choruses ('Joy Through Death' is super fun), but it's infused with the paranoia of a man who DEFINITELY saw *Threads *at a young age. Highly recommended.

There's been a huge upswing in bands experimenting with dissonance in the last 20 years. Arguably this is due to the odd popularity of bands like Deathspell Omega—a French collective that I'll be posting here more than once—but it's nice to see younger bands stepping up and pushing this envelope.

Coma Cluster Void push the envelope harder than anyone. The brainchild of an experimental woodwind musician called Sylvia Hinz, this is microtonal death metal, played on ten-string guitars, twisting and serpentine and almost impossible to follow. It's by no means an easy listen, but it's rewarding if you can stick with it!

They've been around for a long while—last weekend, I saw them perform a 30-year-old record in its entirety—but they've always been really good. Ruun, Below The Lights, RITIIR, all great records. But recently, they went a bit extra-weird, and it's the best run of their career (so far).

Heimdal is in a way a return to their roots, the early Viking poetry of their 90s output, but filtered through a prog lens—no more shrieking and cursing in a necro black metal style. Now they weave abstract post-metal experimentation, analogue synth, and influence from postmodern filmmakers into their brew, and you've heard NOTHING as forward-thinking as this in a long time.

Yeah. Enslaved are great. Dig in.

The Wildhearts were great, weren't they? Every lineup cranked out banger after banger, then they'd split up violently and turn up a few years later with another slab of pop-rock classics. But what did the lads do, while their main band was in a state of flux?

Rich, their drummer, done this, once. 23 years ago, he formed an electro/hip-hop/rock mashup named Grand Theft Audio, who for a brief time were MASSIVE. We're talking movie and video game soundtracks (they were on a Gran Turismo game, but never a GTA, sadly), legendary tours playing to thousands of people... they were about to find themselves on top of the world.

Then their record label imploded, and they all had to move back to Shields.

Honestly, these guys should have been bigger than the Transplants, the other rock/hip-hop collective formed by a famous drummer around the time. But, as the Wildhearts always said, 'if we'd made a million, we'd have spent a million on heroin'. And while I like my rock stars to be, you know, rock stars, I'd rather not see them die.

Anyway, turn this RIGHT up, it's a great record.
