The amount of propellant is the same, but the bullet weight changes. That change in weight relates to better trajectory. A lighter bullet loses speed quicker and suffers more drop

But we were talking about a heavier ammo fired from a smaller powder (subsonic) it will not have the same or better ballistics than the normal/standard bullet fired from a more powerful cartridge. The reason why slugs "pack a punch" is because theyre not strong enough to fully penetrate in most cases (unless youre shooting point blank) with them not penetrating, the target will absorb all the kinetic energy of the bullet. So the slower and heavier bullet wont fly farther than a super sonic aero dynamic bullet.

As for the aerodynamics of a bullet, they aren't the only factor determining speed. In fact, the biggest determining factor is the load or "charge" of the cartridge, alongside the rifling on the barrel.

Let me use sniper rifles as an example. A 200 grain .338 round traveling at around 1,020 m/s doesn't travel as far as a 300 grain .338 round traveling at 900 m/s. The weight of a bullet determines how slowly it loses energy over a distance.

And as for the reason why the subsonic ammo has better penetration and damage range, is because while the bullet travels at subsonic speeds (ie under 343 m/s in zero humidity at 20°C average)it has more energy and is capable of sustaining its energy for longer than the regular grain ammunition of its own design.

More energy means more potential for penetration and range.
