Chapter 6: Ending

It’s finally time; the day has come to claim your glory. You stand proudly in front of all the townspeople and expose the Greench’s entire scheme. The people are visibly disturbed at the fact that someone would try to desecrate such a festive and joyous holiday; you have them right where you want them.

Like the pied piper, you lead the angry mob to confront the Greench. With pitchforks raised and torches ablaze they corner the Greench, demanding his immediate departure from town. The Greench looks at you with betrayal in his eyes, and shouts “Traitor! You said you would let me carry out my plan!” But you knew his words fell on deaf ears; the townspeople were out for blood, and nothing was going to stop them.

Fearing for his safety, the Greench ran, leaving behind a trail of his slimy tears. The people rejoice; Starlight is saved, and you’re the savior! And right on cue arrives the jolly Saint Nicholas, but with a frown on his face? “I’m disappointed in you...”, he started. “I expected you to show compassion, not raise an angry mob!”

But it was too late for lip service; the mob was completely on your side, and cornered Santa the same way they did with the Greench, demanding that you take his place as Santa. Also fearing for his safety, he yields, declaring you the next “Santa”.

Two days later, you can’t help but grin as you take a seat on Santa’s chair while his elves watch with dread at what is to come...

Chapter 1: A Mysterious Letter

"It’s that time of the year again. The soft snow blankets the ground and the winter breeze finds its way through nooks and crannies of your home, only to be sent away by the warmth of your fireplace and a glass of hot cocoa; a sanctuary from the freezing cold. But this peace cannot last; as the organizer of your town’s Starlight Festival party, you must brave the frosty winds to make sure that the festive cheer will be back again this year. You pull on a wool coat and walk outside, only to notice in the next instant that you have mail sticking out of your mailbox! That poor delivery bird, its beak is too short to push the mail all the way in. You wipe the saliva off the envelope, and open it up to read the following message:

“Beware a creature named the Greench, for he plans to ruin the Starlight Festival for all. Find his abode on Greenich Mountain; there you may find some clues on how to stop him.” - T

“How does someone even steal Starlight?”, you think as you contemplate the message. By Santa’s beard it sounds fishy, and you can’t shake the feeling that something is wrong..."

Chapter 2: The Road to Greenich Mountain

The path to Greenich Mountain is steep. And as you climb higher, the winds howl louder and the sky darkens, as if to hide the horrors that lie atop. It’s almost cliche, really. You’re now convinced that this Greench thing is up to no good, and as you’ve established previously in an internal monologue, nothing will get in the way of you and the newest game console you’ll be getting during the festival.

Along the way you run into a hooded old man, standing next to a short, undecorated firtree. “You there,” he begins. “Could you help me put up the decorations on this tree? My son used to do it for me but now he’s gone, and I‘m far too old for this.” You tear up a bit before coming to a stark realization that no one lives on Greenich Mountain, and it seems awfully convenient that there’s now an old man tugging at your heartstrings and distracting you while you’re on a mission to save the Starlight Festival. But then again, you’ve always been told to help anyone in need...

Chapter 3: The Hut? Of Evil

"You finally arrive at the treacherous villain’s secret lair; a quaint, two story log house with a chimney. Lightning courses across the sky, briefly illuminating a doormat with text written in blood red letters that read: Welcome Home. The fireplace remains carelessly lit despite the absence of the Greench, it’s furious flames lapping like ravenous dogs at a picture frame; enclosed is a photo of the dastardly Greench and an older green woman, with text below that reads: “To My Favorite Son”...?

You start to wonder if you’re at the right house. I mean, there’s literally a sign that says it is, but you can’t help but think you’ve made a mistake. But there’s no time for second guessing. You begin to pick the lock of the front door, only to realize that it’s not even locked. You walk in quietly but quickly, fully aware of the fact that the Greench can come back at any time. Now to find out his plans; you notice a diary laying out on his table, as well as a PC. You don’t have time to check both, but one of them should contain the hints to his plans..."

Chapter 4: The Encounter

Time is running out; the Greench plans to replace all pictures of Santa with headshots of himself on Starlight’s Eve. Rumors are that Santa is starved for attention due to spending most of the year in isolation; thus he wants one day a year where people give him all the attention he so desperately needs. That means pictures, decorations, and anything else that can remotely boost his ego. You can’t even begin to imagine his shock when his grand arrival is met with smug headshots of a mischievous and not-so-handsome horned creature!

You head to the town photobooth where the Greench is bound to be, taking the rage-inducing photographs he plans to distribute on such an innocent holiday. Lo and behold, there he is; face contorted in a conceited and vain smile, puny arms flexed in all its pathetic glory. You can tell that the cameraman, with a bitter smile masking his immense pain of having to tolerate this intolerable man, is praying to all gods and demons for this session to end soon.

“Who goes there? Are you here to stop me?”, he shouts as you burst into the room, with barely enough time to contemplate your next move...

Chapter 5: The Wheels of Fate

You tell him from the bottom of your heart that the Starlight Festival is a special holiday for everyone, and ruining it won't heal the wounds in his heart. You start to see cracks in his cold demeanor, but it’s not enough for him to open his heart and abandon his plan. As a final gambit, you decide to bring up the incident with his mother, and how she disappeared after Santa’s reindeer ran over her on Starlight’s Eve. “How did you know?”, the Greench exclaims with visible shock and anger.

Before you get a chance to explain, the old man you helped shows up at the photobooth. “Ho ho ho, what a...uh...quite the nice weather we have here today!”, he stutters, awkwardly inserting himself into the tense conversation.

In a puff of white smoke, the frail old man transforms into Santa, first of his name, bringer of presents, ruler of the North Pole.

“Let me explain, it’s all my fault. That Starlight’s Eve last year, one of my reindeer was sick and disoriented, causing us to run into your mother while she was out shopping for gifts. She was hurt badly, so we took her back to HQ to nurse her back to health.” Santa continued, “She’s still there, alive and well, but since I can’t leave the North Pole until Starlight she decided to stick around and help. She talks about you everyday, and wants you to join her there. I hope you can forgive me for this.”

The Greench smiles with genuine and overwhelming joy for the first time in a year; this warms your heart, but you can’t help but consider getting the last word in this touching exchange...
