On the release it was a 60gb game, a lot of people didnt have internet back then that would be able to download gta 5 in a convenient amount of time, it made more sense to go to your local store, buy the physical copy, and then download the game from the discs, activate it with your key, at that point it got added to your rockstar library and you didnt need the discs to play

The world we live in today have announced shortages, and future shortages that we don't know of yet, and my theory of only digital version is based on those variants, also making the game only digital will definitely be beneficial to rockstar because they keep the control and will make more profits, example I buy a game, I sell it to someone, that money is not going to the gaming company..more unit's sold = more profits, pretty simple. And considering rockstar has spent a lot of money with gta6 ,they definitely want more than double profit.

It's kinda complicated to explain, but the issue is that a lot of people who have played GTA V in the past on Steam will be unable to play any Rockstar game on their Steam account for as long as they do not follow data protection laws. There's going to be a lot of people returning to Rockstar for GTA VI and they're going to find out after buying the game and installing it that it is impossible for them to play, it's an issue for Steam because Rockstar doesn't listen so Steam Support is going to get a lot of angry people and issuing refunds (that is the limit of how it affects Valve, I don't pretend like it's a big deal to them, but it's not nothing)
