Instead of finding higher tier weapons later through the run, we should be able to upgrade them directly by gaining upgrade tokens through a run. So if someone likes the SMG but only has an MK1 and can't find and MK2 or 3, we could keep the MK1 and upgrade it from the workbench. Dismantling could also give one or multiple fragments of a token instead Materia so weapons would be dismantled for upgrades only. (FYI Not the disposable weapons that don't use the ammo box.)

Is the idea that tokens are something you need to farm and will carry over between missions?
No just for that mission specifically. I want to keep the Roguelike elements intact but I want more control over WHEN we can upgrade weapons.
So if I like the smg, I can keep a MK0 and upgrade it to MK3 by the end of that mission
Ohhhhhhh that's neat
There's something magical about finding a mk3 weapon at the first loot node
Yeah and I was thinking to keep that RNG but make it so you don't have to rely on RNG for just the weapons.
It's honestly a much more roguelite idea, I was thinking upgrading assemblers which will let you build higher mk weapons
That would fit with upgrading ships long term but allowing for higher mk weapons to be built as needed
I don't know if it would be like, if you have mk3 assembler it lets you build straight to mk3 or if you have to have lower mks and are allowed to upgrade up to mk3
Lots of permutations
Attachments as loot do sound kind of cool
I think its cool but in a game like this, then you'd have to balance guns dropping with and without attachments. You'd then have to think about reworking the MK0-3 system to fit having attachment drops.
I do think attachment upgrades outside of mission could be a neat way to go about it. Not attachments that make the gun stronger, but just small changes for player preference, like scopes and skins or something. You pick up that gun, it has all the attachments you picked in your loadout
