#Commission Price Advice(?)

A friend of a friend really liked a recent keyboard I put together and mentioned to them that they would be interested in a keyboard/commissioning me to put one together for them. I have one question - How should I go about pricing? Honestly I'm down to do it for free but assuming they insist or something, I don't want them tossing money at me just because they liked it.

I've built/modded four boards and sold two, I've just never done commission work before, so I'm a bit intimidated but excited to do it!

i'm in a similar situation, build 3 boards and a friend of mine is interested in commissioning me to build a board. IIRC alex said on his stream he has a flat commissioning rate of like 50 bucks, regardless of the size of the keyboard or the components, but I think it's better off if we both ask him directly lol.

way I see it they're paying you for the labor going into building a keyboard, whether its soldering or switch/stab lubing. In the end the price is up to you to decide

That's fair

Thankfully it's nothing too complicated, it'll most likely just be adding switches/caps to a kit or swapping switches out on a prebuilt, swapping out keycaps and touching up the stabilizers on my end. Maybe a little customization. Not exactly a higher end build LOL

alex is generally super chill but i can understand your POV. he's been streaming quite often so you're gonna have a lot of luck asking him there

#

he's very active with chat

Yeah we were talking over stream the other day actually. I'll have to give him a shout about it next time I see him around on there

well once you do lmk how it goes, valuable info for us both

Absolutely

Knowing me I'll probably clip what he says and put it here LOL because I know I won't be able to retain it and type it at the same time

I ended up messaging him and coming to a conclusion on my price(s). I used his comm page as baseline and adjusting for effort, as I'll just be working on a budget kit/prebuilt and not a full enthusiast-tier kit. I ended coming up with something along the lines of this

EG
40%-75% | $25
TKL | $30
TKL+ | $45

Alex seemed to believe that was a pretty fair price, with material cost included for stuff like tape mod/lubing stabs, or, if I decide to do it for free, he suggested to ask them for the materials.

Ask them to buy you glam or minion paissanom

Hehe or a one seat mount for 60-65%, two seater for tkl… Btw your astro board looks sick! NamazuRise

Also good ideas, and thank you! Assuming you've beaten Endwalker, they want a board themed on ||Fandaniel|| [Redacted] Villain

Oooo interesting! I don’t know why but that character reminds me of the anime movie akira… How would you approach the request? Color theme or?
I took a break and am about halfway through Endwalker

I’m thinking colour theme. Maroon-purple-ish keycaps with something like a gold knob on a grey board

I’ve also got some sticker ideas I’m gonna ship with the board as a cute aside
