favorite horror movies. parodies included!

#

shaun of the dead is one of the best zombie movies i’ve ever seen

#

the film making is so good

#

horror movie maniacs šŸ”Ŗ 🩸

timber pendant
#

i’m usually not a zombie movie person but shaun of the dead is fun

#

the only other zombie movie i’ve seen that i enjoyed was the girl with all the gifts

feral oyster
#

don’t know if i’ve seen that one

#

i don’t watch too many zombie movies, just ones that catch my eye

#

my fav type of horror movie is haunted house

sweet yew
#

Shaun of the Dead makes fun of zombie movies, but also is one of the best examples of it. It's silly, it's fun, but they never make death and danger seem meaningless, so when it gets high stakes, the movie's able to pivot to serious and emotional so well.

feral oyster
#

i really want to watch the 1977 house but i’m waiting to see if it lands on one of my streaming services

timber pendant
#

girl with all the gifts features a protagonist who is part zombie, and it’s less a horror thriller but a gory exploration of what it means to be human and how right it is that we can decide who has the right to live or die

sweet yew
#

OH RIGHT that movie! The girl with all the gifts was really good.

#

I loved the ending.

feral oyster
#

have you all seen US

timber pendant
#

oh yeah the ending was wonderful

#

i have not but i’ve watched a synopsis bc i wasn’t gonna watch it

feral oyster
#

i think it’s really cool the way they turned I Got 5 into a scary song

#

it totally matches the vibes of something familiar turned sinister

#

it’s also just a banger song

timber pendant
#

mhm mhm

sweet yew
#

So my big horror recommendation is Savageland. Free on youtube. It starts slow, but it does so to make itself seem believable, get you emotionally attached and lay important plot threads. When it picks up, it does not stop.

timber pendant
#

oh fun song turned scary reminds me, i need to know y’all’s thoughts on jennifer’s body

feral oyster
#

so far on my list i got:
jacob’s ladder
savageland

timber pendant
feral oyster
timber pendant
#

it’s delightful
campy in the right ways, it achieves what it sets out to achieve and i adore it

sweet yew
#

Honest to god? Jennifer's Body isn't high cinema and it's not overly scary, but it's a fun popcorn movie.

timber pendant
#

yeah like, it’s not high brow horror but it never claimed to be

sweet yew
#

Yes. And that's okay! Not every movie has to be Oscar bait. There's nothing wrong with doing an 80s camp horror movie that's just fun.

timber pendant
#

exactly!

feral oyster
#

have you guys seen any halloween movies

#

the michael myers ones

timber pendant
#

i’ve seen the very first one

sweet yew
#

All of them, including season of the witch.

feral oyster
#

i saw one of the more recent ones on a hotel channel with three minutes of ads every ten minutes

#

i don’t really remember the plot but i do remember that you can save 15% or more on car insurance with geico

timber pendant
#

loll

feral oyster
#

that was the real fright

sweet yew
#

The original Halloweens and the continuations with Jamie Lee Curtis are pretty solid. Halloween Kills is a little eh, but they're just great slasher films.

The remakes by Rob Zombie are...I love Rob Zombie, but he cannot do subtlety, so they're just endless gore fests.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch doesn't involve Michael Meyers. The series was always meant to be a 'different scary thing every movie' and the director tried to go back to that. I LOVE Halloween III because if you want to talk 'campy horror fun', it wins. It's so bonkers it's amazing.

feral oyster
#

i will watch that

#

to watch:
Savageland
Jacob’s Ladder
Halloween III: Season of the Witch

#

i think the Mist is a nearly perfect horror movie

sweet yew
#

Ha, agreed. I forgot about The Mist, but you're right. I think Stephen King can get a little too...weird with his religion=evil and the super market lady almost became a cartoon villain at the end, but that's such a minor complaint given that the rest of the movie was -perfect-.

timber pendant
#

i still need to watch the mist

#

i haven’t really read or watched a lot of stephen king, not on putting it kinda just never happened

feral oyster
#

don’t look up anything about the mist because you WILL be spoiled just watch it

sweet yew
#

That. Don't do anything to spoil yourself, go in blind.

timber pendant
#

okie!

#

ohhh have y’all seen the autopsy of jane doe?

sweet yew
#

No, actually. Is it good?

timber pendant
#

i think it’s quite good, i really enjoyed the mystery of it and the twists

sweet yew
#

I knew you guys would show me some things I'd missed. Thank you!

timber pendant
#

yaya ofc!

#

i also highly recommend before i wake

sweet yew
#

Autopsy of Jane Doe and Before I wake. Wonderful.

What about you, Wup? Any big recommendations? What's your favorite horror film?

feral oyster
#

let me think

#

the purge tv series is really good. not exactly horror more thriller but really good

#

Alien, if you somehow haven’t seen it.

#

also more like a thriller but still really awesome

sweet yew
#

New Alien movie coming out this year.

timber pendant
#

oh shit?

feral oyster
#

hereditary will make you sleep with the lights on for a week

feral oyster
timber pendant
#

dude hereditary is the only horror film i’ve ever watched that had me laying there eyes wide open afterwards feeling nauseous and jittery for hours

sweet yew
#

Fucking Hereditary...

timber pendant
#

the message of inherited mental illness being impossible to ever really escape hit me like a truck

sweet yew
timber pendant
#

oooo

feral oyster
#

the first season of stranger things is fantastic horror

timber pendant
#

it is

#

it was very well done and intriguing

sweet yew
#

Now I'm trying to think of the scariest series I-...oh, I know one.

#

Okay so lemme explain this. There's a really good Japanese horror show, but Japanese horror is sometimes a little jarring, because they believe something that doesn't always resonate with foreign audiences.

Horror does not always have to make sense. Ghosts and the paranormal can be beyond your understanding.

So if you want to be confused and scared, I recommend Ju-On Origins. It's a prequel to the Japanese version of The Grudge.

timber pendant
#

i love horror that doesn’t even make sense at times

#

japanese horror is amazing at that
y’all seen that youtube video my house walk-through

feral oyster
#

nope

#

but if it’s about a scary house then i’d love it

timber pendant
#

yes it is!

sweet yew
#

No, but now I want to.

timber pendant
#

it’s very well made

feral oyster
timber pendant
#

oooo i’ve been meaning to watch skinamarink

feral oyster
#

ā€œYou really need to be immersed for this movie to work, like you gotta watch it alone without lights. Not even as like a 'challenge', but just because the movie is so slow and the shots are so ambiguous it's very easy to lose your attention. If you watch it with friends, you guys are just gonna be talking the whole time like "OH whats that? is that a face? wait what room is this? have we seen this corner before. OH is that the dad? Did the legos move?" etc. My immersion wasn't great for this movie because I was eating a really yummy bowl of chili, honestly it was REALLY good chili I really knocked it out of the park like it wasn't crazy or complex or anything it didn't even have meat it was just beans and peppers and fire-roasted tomatoes but i think adding a little bit of dark chocolate gave the flavors more depth also I used really good smoked paprika imported from spain and I had a lil bit of greek yogurt on top because im not gonna buy sour cream for one dish when greek yogurt is a good substitute plus can be used for breakfast (i add it to smoothies) but the extra tanginess of the yogurt complemented the chili wonderfully anyway yeah just eating that bowl of chili broke my immersion kinda :/ā€œ - Jams

timber pendant
#

lolll

sweet yew
timber pendant
#

that sounded like a phenomenal chili

thorny barn
#

i was so sad i missed the horror film talk in the general while im editing my fanfic rn
i really enjoy all the saw movies. tho i haven’t had a chance to see saw x yet

timber pendant
#

i’ve seen the first saw but none of the others, i’ll probably end up watching them at some point tho bc my friend i watch movies with loves the saw movies

thorny barn
sweet yew
#

Saw is...it's like horror movie Jackass. You don't watch for the plot.

#

You watch to see whatever wacky stunts Jigsaw is up to this time.

thorny barn
#

the first 3 are sooo great. AND THEN IT LOSES THE PLOT FOR ME

#

i could go on and on how about they weren’t following his original rules

sweet yew
#

You're right, the first three actually have a decent plot, but then they just went absolutely bonkers.

thorny barn
#

like he had a POINT IN THE FIRST THREE AND THEY WENT CRAZY

#

like 😭😭😭😭

feral oyster
thorny barn
sweet yew
#

The problem was that they decided to kill him, and then didn't have any interesting ideas to replace him with, so the last seven fucking movies have been 'uuuuuh look at the traps'.

timber pendant
sweet yew
#

Don't spoil it for her. šŸ˜„ She hasn't seen it!

thorny barn
#

omg okay i wont say anything

#

you have to watch it. that’s a great movie

#

i love stephen king stuff. we all went through an IT phase right?

timber pendant
#

i promise i’ll watch mist as soon as i have the time to so we can talk about it lol

sweet yew
#

Of course, IT's iconic.

timber pendant
#

i did see it, the newer one, it was pretty good, i really should see the older one someday

thorny barn
#

the older one is so terrible BAHAHAH

#

like ik it’s a classic and i appreciate it in all its glory but

sweet yew
#

The older one is worth seeing just so you can laugh at how it was considered terrifying back in its day. The new one absolutely dances around it.

thorny barn
#

^^^^ exactly.

timber pendant
#

it can be very interesting to see what was once phenomenal horror looking goofy and tame next to more modern horror

#

god you know what has withstood the test of time pretty well though? the thing

feral oyster
thorny barn
sweet yew
#

I'm someone who generally appreciates retro horror and believes that practical effects can be amazing. I'm usually the guy saying 'that remake was pointless'. So when I say the new one's better, that's almost hard to admit.

Oh god yes, The Thing is a top 10 recommendation.

timber pendant
#

oh my gosh you haven’t seen the thing? duuuude it’s so good, the practical effects guy went crazy

thorny barn
#

i’m really bad at watching classic horror movies 🫣 like i’ve never seen the shining, psycho, scream, carrie

timber pendant
#

ooo the first scream is really good too

thorny barn
#

they’re all on my list, especially scream

timber pendant
#

i’m usually very good at catching twists before they happen and scream caught me totally off guard

sweet yew
#

Much like Shaun of the Dead, Scream manages to make fun of its material while also being a great example of it. It breaks the rules to make things scarier.

thorny barn
sweet yew
#

No, no, Shutter Island's a good one.

timber pendant
#

ooooh shutter island is wonderful

thorny barn
#

i loveeee it. it was sooo good. my brother tricked me into watching by saying he was just going to play the trailer but it was just the whole movie LOL

timber pendant
#

lmaooo that’s such a brother thing to do

thorny barn
#

have any of y’all seen X? that was a recent movie but felt like such an old timey slasher

sweet yew
#

Yes, actually! I loved everything about X. The theme of the fear of aging, the old fashioned horror in an old fashioned setting, it was much more than a stupid horror film.

timber pendant
#

for some reason i saw x and my brain jumped right to jason x

#

i still need to see x

sweet yew
#

Jason X is not a good movie, but it's a great fuckin' movie, you know?

timber pendant
thorny barn
#

i’ve never even heard of it 😭 immediately on my watch list

timber pendant
#

it’s about jason voorhees but he’s in outer space

thorny barn
#

BAHAHAHHAHAHA WHAT

feral oyster
#

whats everyone’s favorite snacks to eat while watching scary movies

sweet yew
#

Jason X is...it's almost a send up of pointless sequels where the horror char is somewhere ridiculous or they have to come up with a new concept. So they just put Jason on a space station in the future because why not. And yes, this is dumb. The writers and cast know this. So they go all out.

feral oyster
#

m&ms and horror just go so well

#

i love putting m&ms in my popcorn

thorny barn
timber pendant
sweet yew
#

Pizza bagels for the red stains.

thorny barn
#

ohhhh the wild berry skittles go hard too

timber pendant
#

bottle caps are good too

#

OH HOW COULD I FORGET MY BELOVED: BLACK LICORICE?
EVERY MOVIE VIEWING EXPERIENCE MUST HAVE IT

thorny barn
#

THAT’S A CRAZY SAY

#

HOLY SHIT BOTH OF THESE ARE CRAZY SAYS

timber pendant
#

crazy positive or crazy negative lol

thorny barn
#

neutral.

#

i like a lil chalky candy, so bottle caps are sometimes yum

sweet yew
#

Oh oh, wait, I have a movie for you all. If you want an amazingly corny horror film. But it's amazing due to one small detail.

thorny barn
#

but i can’ttttt do black licorice

feral oyster
#

black licorice is a scary candy

timber pendant
#

i have a little brother so as a defense mechanism when i was young i learned to love the candies most people enjoy less lol

#

black licorice is so gooood

feral oyster
#

like if candy had genres black licorice is scary

timber pendant
#

good and plenties are my jam

feral oyster
#

yeah you have some interesting tastes but i respect it

#

peanut butter candy and scary movies are so good

thorny barn
timber pendant
#

i just really like the taste of anise
i like anisette cookies a lot too

thorny barn
#

i HATEEE anise which is why i hate black licorice

#

i can spot anise from a mile away

timber pendant
#

i have a licorice tea i drink too šŸ’€

feral oyster

sweet yew

It's called Blades. It's about a killer lawnmower loose at a golf course. Yes, that's another dumb concept. But the best part is...

...it's nearly a line for line remake of the movie JAWS, but the shark replaced with a fucking lawnmower. And yes, it's intentional.

On the surface, it's already a corny movie, but as soon as you realize that and see the similarities, it becomes art. The whole thing is a Jaws parody in disguise and most critics did not notice.

thorny barn
#

BAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA I NEED TO SEE THAT RIGHT NOW

timber pendant
#

IM SO GLAD I LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE THAT MOVIE EXISTS

feral oyster
timber pendant
#

itemlabel horror fans blades movie night

feral oyster
#

Movies to see:
Jacob’s Ladder
Savageland
Halloween III: Season of the Witch
Blades

thorny barn
#

IT BASED IN NEW JERSEY MAKES IT BETTER BAHAHHAHAHA

feral oyster
sweet yew
#

I'm gonna find out where it's streaming, but that one's amazing if only for the fact that nearly no critic realized it and the director NEVER makes it too obvious in the movie.

Yeah, it's made by a group called Troma Team in New Jersey which loves making silly movies.

thorny barn
#

HELLO WHERE’S MY TED LASSO FANS
ONE OF THE CHARACTERS NAME IS ROY KENT???

#

now ik if i ever meet jason sudeikis im gonna ask if that was the inspiration behind the name

timber pendant
#

i love that, more people need to just make stupid shit that doesn’t take itself seriously the world would be such a bright place

thorny barn
#

it’s on peacock

#

yeah immediately added to watch list

sweet yew
#

Absolutely agreed. XD

timber pendant
#

blades is on my watchlist too it looks delightful

sweet yew
#

Of all the movies I did not expect to talk about today.

timber pendant
#

lol fr

#

what’s y’all’s favorite horror trope/ theme?

feral oyster
#

character thinks they escaped but doesn’t

thorny barn
#

i really just like ghost shit

sweet yew
#

Oh hell yes.

Average group of people suddenly put in a survival situation. Alien, The Thing, Event Horizon, that's just off the top of my head. This trope is often used for disaster movies, but it can be really effective in horror, because banding together to survive is essential. Plus it often means one of them might be the killer.

thorny barn
timber pendant
#

ooo yes yes yes all good choices

#

i love it when a house is an active participant in its own haunting

feral oyster
#

for sure

timber pendant
#

like when it’s less the house is haunted and more the house is the haunting

sweet yew
#

IT NEEDS TO BE. For a scary haunted house movie, the house needs to have a lot of personality. It needs to be an entity like a slasher villain.

thorny barn
#

all i can think about is monster house with you saying that

timber pendant
#

exactly!

#

lmaooo god monster house..,

sweet yew
#

Monster House may have been for kids, but it was effectively scary.

feral oyster
#

i think also normal town, normal house that slowly shows more and more signs that something is wrong, a la Get Out

thorny barn
#

i love jordan peele movies. Us is a great example of put into survivor mode but in such a unique way

sweet yew
timber pendant
feral oyster
#

specifically like when the danger is immediately present and not hidden but the character hasn’t figured this out yet. a zombie hiding doesn’t count

timber pendant
#

yes like, it’s hidden in plain sight and all the signs have been ignored until it’s too late

feral oyster
#

have you all seen the newer episodes of the twilight zone

timber pendant
#

good shit

sweet yew
#

Jordan Peele was the right man for the job.

timber pendant
#

ah fuck i haven’t watched twilight zone in forever

thorny barn
#

another on the watch list. everyone always talks about it but never have seen any

timber pendant
#

the only one i really remember is the one where that guy who loves to read steps on his glasses after everyone else in the world dies and so he can’t read anymore

sweet yew
#

Of course you remember that one, that's one of the most tragic episodes of anything ever written. XD

thorny barn
#

holy shit

timber pendant
#

it was so sad :-(

sweet yew
#

That's one of the old episodes. And old Twilight Zone had hit and miss episodes, but the good ones hold up even today.

thorny barn
#

nvm now i dont know if i want to watch if it’s that devastating DAMN

sweet yew
#

I think it's both one of the first series where every episode is its own story and definitely one of the first series where you don't always get a happy ending.

timber pendant
#

oh wait i remember one other and it’s only bc a chowder episode riffed on it:
that retired actress who spends all day watching her old movies lamenting that she’s not as young and pretty anymore and then she ends up getting sucked into the movies
idk if im remembering that one correctly

thorny barn
#

CHOWDER

timber pendant
#

CHOWDER FAN??

#

A FELLOW CHOWDER ENJOYER??

thorny barn
#

I REMEMBER WATCHING THAT 😭😭

#

I USED TO HAVE A TINY LITTLE FIGURINE OF HIM

sweet yew
#

You are absolutely remembering that one correctly.

timber pendant
#

i would like to thank chowder for taking a big role in forming my sense of humor

timber pendant
thorny barn
#

i remember watching the marvelous misadventures of flapjack around that time too

#

i love the chowder hats people make nowadays

timber pendant
#

i actually never got to see flapjack as a kid but from clips i’ve seen the humor looks very similar

timber pendant
sweet yew
#

Oh jeez, can I give one more horror recommendation? Little Monsters. It's about a Kindergarten class on a field trip when a zombie apocalypse hits, and the teachers are not only trying to keep them safe, but convince them all its just a game of pretend.

It's a lot like Shaun of the Dead where its funny, but the danger is real and it can become emotional on a dime.

thorny barn
#

OH MY GOD?

timber pendant
thorny barn
#

added to my note to watch

timber pendant
#

and there’s that children’s entertainment actor there too right? that one?

sweet yew
#

YEP.

timber pendant
#

yes okay that’s been on my watchlist for a bit it looks so funny

sweet yew
#

Played by the guy who did Olof from Frozen, and he is not a good person in this one. XD

thorny barn
#

YO JOSH GAD AND LUPITA

#

i need to see this immediately actually

#

like this looks incredible

feral oyster
sweet yew
#

Yeah, it's worth it. It's the most emotionally attached I have -ever- been to the survivors in a horror film. I did not expect that from the Kindergarten zombie movie, but Lupita kills it.

#

Like I said, I'm a total horror movie buff. My favorite genre. So I frigging love getting to geek out about my top picks. And now ya'll have given me a watch list too.

timber pendant
#

hell yeah! i love horror, my goal in life is to be a graphic novelist and write horror stories

sweet yew
#

Fun goal. And the more good/fun horror you see, the more you can spot examples of what works.

Any idea what kind of horror stories you wanna do? Fun plots in mind?

timber pendant
#

i have a few ideas i’ve had pinging around for a while:
guy goes out geocaching and ends up finding a dismembered corpse. then his gps becomes haunted by the ghost of the deceased who gives him the coordinates for all the missing body parts.
a girl goes looking for her missing dog and has a run in with a small towns local cryptid, the roadkill queen
the angry spirit of a miscarriage is summoned up by the blue baby game and it wants a host mother so it can be born properly this time

#

i get so nervous about not executing things the way i want to that i haven’t finished any but im working on getting over it lol

thorny barn
#

i love the geocaching idea especially the ghost haunting the gps

sweet yew
#

Do you accept ideas? Because I think something might turn the miscarriage idea into pure terror.

timber pendant
#

yes?

sweet yew
#

The angry spirit of a miscarriage one? Reincarnation. There's plenty of ghost horror stories, but not many horror stories about the concept of reincarnation. Imagine some serial killer or some terrible person who was supposed to be born again, only for it to screw up and now they're trapped in limbo. And of course, being the terrible person they are, they blame the mother.

Like it's not just some innocent kid they were carrying. It's an existing soul who was ready for another shot at the world, and blames the mom for taking it away.

timber pendant
#

oo yes i like this

#

bc the less innocent the better tbh, the ghost i’ve been calling the yolk, and it’s kind of supposed to be allegorical for unwanted pregnancy, hence the horror of it being its unwanted entry into the womb

thorny barn
#

yolk 😭

sweet yew
#

Absolutely. That's such a fun theme to play with because it's a horror that hits on a primal level. They didn't want this THING and now it's here and in their body.

timber pendant
#

that’s one of the aspects of alien that i loved the most, was the fact that the horror of it took some inspiration from the idea of unwanted pregnancy

#

it’s scary shit and i feel like horror is a wonderful medium to draw attention to things we find important to discuss

timber pendant
# thorny barn yolk 😭

yeah it’s a bit silly but i like how yolk means the yolk of an egg, but it also sounds like yoke, the frame that binds work animals together. an unwanted set of shackles

sweet yew
#

Alien did that. Ridley Scott wanted Alien to feel super uncomfortable and gross to guys, because it's female horror. The facehuggers are forcible pregnancy that's unwanted, there's something wrong growing inside of you and you can't get it out. And with the reincarnation thing, you have the ability to essentially turn it into an Exorcist story with an unwanted entity inside, but with that very real parallel.

I love love love love drawing from actual fear and natural body horror when it comes to horror stories, because yeah, you can explore the roots of that fear.

timber pendant
#

exactly exactly! horror that is inspired by real human horrors we can experience any day is wonderful and a very good means of expressing frustration or drawing attention

#

that’s why the babadook is my favorite horror movie <3

thorny barn
sweet yew
#

Yep. Oh that's so cool, keep us updated here. I do like your other ideas too (the GPS one is fun because digital horror is always a good time), but that one really jumped out at me.

timber pendant
#

thank you, will do! sometime i’ll post some of my concept art and good examples of my work in the art channel or something, not right now just bc i done wanna get up and rifle through all my papers lol

gentle forge
#

John kramer is cool

#

I like saw their fun movies

feral oyster
#

i liked Spiral

bleak plover
#

the writer of spiral follows me on twitter for some reason

#

does anyone else have a separate favorite ā€œbadā€ horror movie and ā€œgoodā€ horror movie?

#

my favorites are saw and nope, respectively

feral oyster
sweet yew
#

I did not like Spiral. There are so many things that had to go perfectly right for that plan to happen. Like how the hell did he manage to construct an entire saw trap in the basement of a police station with no one noticing? And that blood trap thing? The science of how that works boggles the mind. How did he even learn to make those highly complex traps? Where did he get the materials? Not to mention there are two plotholes that are too big to ignore.

  1. Apparently background checks don't exist in the Saw Universe. The death of the villain's father was big enough news to cause major changes in the police force, but not important enough that the police force would realize the dude's SON joined the force? Seriously, a basic internet search would reveal that. It doesn't matter if the cops didn't know he was there that day, they'd know that guy had a son just from family records.

  2. His grand plan was to turn the cop who saved his life into an ally...by murdering their father in front of them? Remember, he planned to kill the dad either way with that puppet gun gimmick. Like this villain OF ALL PEOPLE should understand how bad getting a dad killed in front of him is. Remember his origin story?

feral oyster
#

most sequels are cash grabs unfortunately

sweet yew
#

How can you let it go if the final encounter makes no sense? Like the entire plan of this guy was 'I need you to be on my side...so I'm going to do the one thing guaranteed to piss anyone off, and then hope I can beat you in a fist fight'.

#

Like he could have brought a gun too. That probably would have helped. Got time to build a trap that sucks the blood from Samuel Jackson and then turns him into a death puppet, but can't hide a pistol under the rug?

feral oyster
#

🄲

#

it’s ok that you didn’t like it and i can see why but i still thought it was a fun movie

#

if a movie is fun im willing to ignore a LOT

#

not trying to convince you to like it, just stating my personal opinions.

sweet yew
#

Okay yes, I'll admit it's a fun movie. But I think that's why it hurts for me because Saw used to be REALLY GOOD. There was a time when the plot twists were astounding and very little suspension of disbelief was required. But Saw is a hard franchise to write for because it requires a bad guy who's a genius. They're building these traps without anyone finding out and manipulating everyone. And writing a genius is hard.

I don't blame you for liking Spiral, Spiral would be a much better movie if the rest of the Saw franchise hadn't existed, you know?

feral oyster
#

yes, i agree with all of that

timber pendant
#

so excited, this wednesday my friend agreed to theme the watch party around horror media. i’m showing him nope and the first scream bc he’s never seen them, then we’re watching perfect blue, then we’re gonna start watching the corpse party anime :-D

#

we both loved satoshi kon’s paranoia agent so i’m super excited about perfect blue

thorny barn
#

that sounds so fun!!!

sweet yew
#

I am so glad Nope is getting love. I feel like it didn't make as much of a splash as Get Out and Us, despite the fact that it's every bit as good.

timber pendant
#

yeah, i think it deserved more attention than it got

sweet yew
#

Especially the secret in the movie poster. Did you hear about that?

timber pendant
sweet yew
#

Look closely. That's not a hat.

And of course they chose that character for it.

timber pendant
#

oh my goddd jean jacket was right there???

sweet yew
#

That poster was out for months and NO ONE caught it. That madman revealed the monster (and its victim) off the bat and the world missed it.

timber pendant
#

that’s so fucking good????

#

thank whatever powers may be for jordan peele

sweet yew
#

Seriously, between Jordan Peele, the success of IT and Stranger Things, we're living in a good age of horror right now.

thorny barn
#

god i love stranger things

#

the amount of funkos i have for it. it’s one of my biggest hyperfixations

timber pendant
#

As the Gods Will is absolutely a horror movie. It's a horror comedy, but it's pretty messed up. And funny as it is, it really symbolizes Japanese horror. You're not supposed to 'understand' why things are happening. Spirits and higher powers are under no obligation to make sense.

It was a damn good movie

#

Idk tho

feral oyster
#

😬

brisk rune
#

Yeah idk honestly from what I’ve seen honestly some horror movies don’t really get to me

#

And get out was one of ā€˜em js

feral oyster
#

i thought it was really scary but it was definitely more psychological horror. like the fear of being in a super dangerous situation with absolutely no where to go and no one to feel secure with. i guess it wouldn’t be as scary if you’ve never been in a situation like that, and that’s probably good!

#

there’s a horror movie for everyone, but not every movie is for everyone. i get it

brisk rune
#

I was not as much scared as I was uncomfortable. I hate eye contact so when they were just looking at him it was kinda iffy, but yeah.

#

But yeah it was a damn good movie. Definitely one of my favorites. (I dont watch movies often)

brisk rune
#

Watched saw and saw 2 a couple days ago. Really great stuff imo !

sweet yew
#

Fun story, the genre confusion behind Get Out is why Jordan Peele decided to make 'Us'. He wanted to do a full on horror film.

feral oyster
#

i rewatched Get Out again and thought it was super scary but it wasn’t in the same style as others, that’s for sure. Us was better, imo

sweet yew
#

Well it's not that Get Out is a bad movie. It's phenomenal. I just think he was going for more of a dark sci fi vibe than out and out scary. And Jordan Peele must have to, because he went 'okay, you guys want scary, watch this'.

limpid flame

torn solstice

sweet yew
#

I loved Nope, but I think I liked Us most of all.

Spoiler for those who haven't seen it. Apologies for the wall of text, but I think you all might appreciate this.

||The final showdown where the Lupita's Doppleganger were talking...then it suddenly started walking backward toward her? Easily one of the most afraid I've been in horror films. That caught me so off guard. I kept thinking of the Doppleganger as a human threat, as 'okay, she's safe if it's turned around'. And then it comes at her like that to the deep strings of the theme song. Its completely eerie calm...

To me, Red is up there with Michael Meyers and Jason as a 'human shaped horror monster'.

AND watch the fight again once you know the ending. As the fight goes on, Red stays extremely calm and graceful, but Addy gets wild and animalistic...like a Tethered.||

brisk rune
#

Also I watched the silence of the lambs last night, it was great imo

thorny barn
#

oooo that is a classic

sweet yew
#

Fun fact. Did you know that the book Hannibal has a different ending than the movie?

thorny barn
#

Oooo I love when movies do that, unpopular opinion LOL. I believe it also happened in The Mist

sweet yew
#

So have you seen Hannibal?

thorny barn
#

I have seen Hannibal but it’s been awhileeee

sweet yew
#

So you know at the end of the movie when ||Hannibal captures Clarice, brings out the one cop that had looked down on her and makes a fancy meal of his brain while he's still alive? Clarice ends up escaping, but Hannibal gets away?||

#

In the book, ||Clarice falls in love with Hannibal then. She realizes he's the only one who ever saw her potential. They eat the cop's brain and escape together.||

#

Because the kind of fucked up thing about the whole scenario is that|| the police force never saw Clarice for the powerful woman she was. Hannibal was the only one who ever treated her like an equal. And so he corrupts her.||

feral oyster
#

i’ve seen the movie but didn’t know there was a book

sweet yew
#

Yes, agreed. And they kept elements of it in the movie with how ||despite capturing a notorious serial killer, Clarice is always pushed around or belittled by her male colleagues. But they didn't go all the way with it. I guess because it might have been too dark and Clarice was so beloved? I don't know.||

But yes, I think the book's ending is better. Not to say the movie's bad. It's amazing and possibly a better whole product than the book. I just think the book has a better ending.

thorny barn
#

the book ending wouldve been so much better in the movie damn

sweet yew
#

Right? ||The whole theme of that book is that monsters make monsters. Clarice tried her best to be a good cop, but even in the movie, it never worked out. She always was belittled, ignored, passed up for promotion and disciplined harshly for the slightest mistake. And the idea is that if there's no angels who have your back, eventually you'll go to the devil.||

I think they didn't do it because it was a little too dark for the time it came out in. But yeah, it would have kicked ass.

#

.> Also sorry I am such a horror geek, I don't usually get an audience like this.

thorny barn
#

No no i love background like that. I’ve never read the book, but now I want to. It would’ve been so cooler to see that play out in the movie

sweet yew
#

Watching a new horror film on Netflix. Bodies, Bodies, Bodies. I'll report back!

sweet yew
#

It's a horror mystery that's half dark comedy, but it's quite scary when it wants to be. At its core it is a 'killer on the lose' movie, and the reveal is beyond satisfying.

Highly recommend, it's on Netflix.

my savageland theory: francisco is a christ allegory

sweet yew
#

...He kind of is, now that I think about it. I don't know if it's intentional or not, but I could see it!

#

||Including the resurrection!||

next fern
#

here’s my full thing on it:

||when jesus was sentenced to death, he was forced to carry the cross he was crucified on until he collapsed from exhaustion. this isn’t unlike francisco salazar, who carried his camera (his cross) until he collapsed on the side of the road, where he was eventually led to his death.

the name of the town ā€œsangre de cristoā€ is literally ā€œthe blood of christā€. the name seems purposefully chosen.

when duane, the father of Grace, is leaving the voice message he says ā€œonly god can judge me. only he has seen what i’ve seen.ā€ interesting to note, since francisco was the only other person alive witnessing it.

in the artistic rendition of francisco’s execution, his arms are outstretched like a crucifixion.

francisco’s body goes missing from his grave. when jesus’ tomb was opened, he was also missing. they both resurrected.

during the credits, there’s a huge painting on a building of francisco as a christ figure. the paintings also include the zombies. the people shown all have tattoos of francisco, as if they’re all followers surrounding a christ like symbol of him. ||

sweet yew
#

...Welp, time to watch again, that kind of changes ||what the monsters could be!||

#

That's such a good theory. XD

feral oyster
#

something to kind of support the ||spiritual monster theory is that people don’t seem to turn until after death. salazar is seen with injuries on his hand but doesn’t turn until after execution||

#

Or could maybe be counted as a parody of sorts

feral oyster
#

parody horror yeah you can def talk about it here

#

i thought you meant savageland at first lol

sweet yew
#

Zombieland is absolutely horror. You can have very effective horror comedies, as comedy makes you care about the chars, which makes the horror parts have higher stakes. Shawn of the Dead is a very good example of this. Half the movie is funny, but from ||his mom revealing the bite onward|| it's zombie horror that pulls on all the emotional strings it wove.

For me it's a horror so long as the stakes of life and death are real.

It is fun! Fleegle is my favorite character.

mild path
sweet yew
#

Oh, good example!

#

We could probably go all day about examples of horror comedies. And there's kind of two genres. One is where it knows its ridiculous and the 'horror' part is more of fun. Like all the Friday the 13th sequels. Then the other kind is stuff like It and Shawn of the Dead where it does both in a kind of balance.

Alien Romulus on Hulu. Highly recommend!

Also I just watched The Birds for the first time. I cannot overstate how effectively scary it still is.

Ok so there’s this really underrated horror game series that would go hard as a movie… too bad it probably won’t happen… https://store.steampowered.com/app/319510/Five_Nights_at_Freddys/

Welcome to your new summer job at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, where kids and parents alike come for entertainment and food as far as the eye can see! The main attraction is Freddy Fazbear, of course; and his two friends. They are animatronic robots, programmed to please the crowds! The robots' behavior has become somewhat unpredictable at night howe...

Aside from my joke post, I’m sure a bunch of y’all heard of ā€œBad Parentingā€ but if you haven’t, the story telling of that game is so good. I wouldn’t say it’s THAT scary but it is a bit unsettling. It looks like it’s straight out of a PS1 game or something.

oh if video game horror is welcome here, i’ve been really into world of horror. it’s a roguelite mystery horror game that’s heavily inspired by the works of junji ito and hp lovecraft. lots of achievements to go after, lots of variation on characters you can play, backgrounds you can come from, curses you can suffer, ancient gods that you need to prevent the awakening of, and levels of difficulty you can play.
i’d love to keep gushing about this but yall probably aren’t interested in reading a wall of text lol, here’s the release trailer

i could talk for ages about how much i love this game lol

feral oyster
timber pendant
#

aah true true
so like
basically the goal of each playthrough is to beat a doom counter
if the counter reaches 100 then the old god is awakened. to reach the old god and end the ceremony you need to copmplete a series of mysteries that are selected at random at the beginning of the run and have a variety of endings
completing actions and exploding locations and visiting shops and such can run up that counter by various degrees

#

and sometimes depending on what status effects you have or mysteries you have completed beforehand, you can achieve very specific mystery endings

feral oyster
#

interesting

timber pendant
#

like in one mystery, in which the schools girls swim team is being abducted one by one, if you enter the final encounter with a specific curse inflicted on your character, you get a secret ending

#

or if you take a hatchet from the final monster in one mystery, it allows you to access a secret exit in another mystery that is normally blocked off

#

there’s a wide variety of characters to play that each have their own stats and effects

#

like haru, who starts with a nicotine addiction and can gain a yakuza card for cheaper prices in shops, he starts with better strength but bad knowledge

#

my favorite i’ve been playing is juri okusawa, she’s a girl being stalked by a terrible entity, and she begins with family curse. as she does actions and explores locations, a counter for the closeness of her curse rises. she can level up at half the exp cost when the presence hasn’t caught her yet, but once her curse reaches 100% half of her face starts peeling off and she doesn’t get the leveling boost anymore

#

i’m currently trying to unlock a secret character, whose existence is only hinted at by finding a bloody sweater in the woods, and a tv news report that can be encountered during the rest period between mysteries

#

i’m also trying to encounter Something Truly Evil, which is the creature at the beginning of the trailer. but so far i haven’t been able to draw its attention and raise its meter enough to draw it out

#

when i do it’s probably gonna kick my ass but i really wanna see it lol

another thing i really like is there’s a wide variety of old gods to face off against! and successfully banishing one can open up the option to try your luck against another

#

each ancient god has its own negative effect

feral oyster
#

the gameplay looks fun

timber pendant
#

like the spider god preventing escape from battle, the dreaming god causing doom to raise when your reason drops, and the horror from the stars messing up your stats when you raise the doom too high

#

it’s very fun!!!

#

and its actually pretty suspenseful. climbing the lighthouse at the end to get to the ceremony while your doom meter keeps climbing is honestly really nerve wracking for me lol

#

i just unlocked a new backstory effect that i need to beat and im dreading it
ill-fated: all event skill checks automatically fail šŸ’€

feral oyster
timber pendant

it allows access to the next backstory, and beating some backstories can earn achievements or unlock new content in the game
so they can be difficult but they’re worth the challenge of playing with

i wouldn't say its necessarily scary but it has really good tension and suspense building stuff. body horror/needles and such as well

it had some moments that actually make me disgusted and like. repulsed to what i was seeing

i definitely would recommend it

now im finally watching longlegs

yeah i liked it

i didn’t like terrifier though. too over the top

limpid flame
#

yea im pretty desensitized when it comes to movie gore but this one really did it

#

i haven't seen terrifier yet

sweet yew

Terrifier's a mixed bag for me. A slasher with a villain who's got a lot of personality, but there's times when it just borders on sadism.

I really want to see The Substance!

limpid flame

the new nosferatu movie is really good i think

#

ive read dracula but i havent seen the original nosferatu so i cant compare it to that

#

but compared to dracula the book its a good adaptation

i think the messages around the dangers of different kinds of desire (money, lust, power) are all very interesting and well-communicated

theres a ||twist near the end|| that was done well

Guys

#

ā€œWoman of the Hourā€ is pretty good

#

I think that’s what it’s called

feral oyster
mild path

It’s about the real life serial killer Rodney Alcala

#

Not a documentary though

feral oyster
#

ā˜¹ļø

#

i don’t really like movies about real serial murderers

mild path
#

It’s cool though

feral oyster
#

whether they aim to or not they always end up glamorizing the killers

mild path
#

Fair. I still recommend it, though

feral oyster
#

i think horror movies are best at using fictional monsters to represent grander ideas or struggles

#

there are no moral conversations to be had around real murderers

#

just senseless violence

mild path
#

Do you not like Terrifier then?

feral oyster
#

i don’t

mild path
#

I’m with you on that

Too much gore for no reason, except it just being the point of the movie

To be honest, I haven’t watched any of them, but that’s my understanding of them

i’ve seen parts, never wanted to finish them

next fern
#

terrifier is just splatterhouse shit i can’t enjoy at all

#

sure it’s funny in parts but it just feels like nothing to me. gore is the substance and not like how SAW is with a convoluted plot that’s fun to follow

#

terrifier is just low quality trash to put on in the background

#

really lame shit

Fair! I binged it all, it hooked me immediately.

#

The twists it takes are all completely unexpected and every time I thought I knew what was going to happen I was so wrong

sweet yew
#

I've watched Yellowjackets! I 100% agree on the music choices. Weirdly enough, I kind of think that the 'supernatural or psychological' works for the kid portion, but not the adult portion as much. But that might just be because I think the adult portion needs something to make it a bit more urgent/exciting.

All in all, it's a great show and like I really, REALLY hope that its building to something on the adult side. The kids side is some of the most tense, consequential and twisty stuff I've seen. Them grown ups need to pick it up!
