Hi, I have a WinCtrl 737 PFN (FMS ) Unit which I use as my primary FMS for the PMDG 737.
I thinking about picking up the WinCtrl MCDU for use when I fly Airbus.
However I was thinking then if I could use the MCDU as my second / Flight Officer FMS in the 737.

Does anyone know if this can be done in regards to the MCDU screen display
( I am confident the buttons can all be programed, even though some are a bit different.)
It would maybe need to be set up as the FO side in SimAppPro before closing it again...just not sure if Mobiflight Python will connect with the MCDU in the 737...

Any thoughts?

I would read the aircraft-related python script in mobiflight's install folder -> Scripts if I remember right, those sometimes have some information, and at least a hint whether it has anything related to second or third unit

No need to look at the scripts. We list all supported aircraft in our documentation, along with a note if there is limited support for only the pilot's side.

The question was if the** WingCtrl MCDU (Airbus CDU) works in the PMDG 737.

I have already read all the documentation, it says nothing about that I believe

They are all just screens to mobiflight. We dont care about the name of it vs the plane you fly

All the Winctrl CDU (PFP or MCDU) screens work the same with Mobiflight, regardless of the aircraft loaded. The python script sends whatever the sim has to a designated Mobiflight Websocket that writes the data to the screens.

yes thx i have already been over the docs and have all my other WinCtrl Airbus devices successfully configured to work in 737 including Chronometer.

If the screens all work the same than that most likely answers my original question. I still need to selcct it as FO in SimAppPro I believe before then switching off SimAppPro.

Incidently the 737 device (PFP) works by default (using SimAppPro) in the Fly By Wire A320 which was a pleasant surprise...

So if you have two of the same 737 PFP unit you allocate which one displays, but you have to set this up in SimAppPro. I am not aware that Mobiflight allows you to control this though

so you might need to swap back which is captain and which is first officer if you want the boeing one be primary for pmdg and airbus be primary in the airbus

I believe there was a feature request to make the screen display to be either capt or fo, settable in software. I think Mobiflight doesn't really care if the screen data is coming from one or the other. This could also enable soft switching one unit to act as both.

I had mentioned this back in January but I never followed up on it until now so the request was not from me but great if someone else has already done it???. This is the topic of the other post I made the other day, to be able to use one CDU to switch between Capt and FO screen

I am not a developer, but it sounds not too complex to just tell the python script where to read the screen data from, instead of it being hard coded.

i have no idea how hard it is either, but would think that if a user can choose which screen the CDU is controlling (from within Mobiflight)that would be great. Although the WinCtrl devices are reasonably affordable and a second one would solve the problem, it is also a matter of desktop space..

Tuomas suggested mentioning this in the dev chat first, and anyway I dont know where to submit it on github anyway.

Also the load time between screen inputs would have to be reasonably fast, otherwise might ruin the efficiency of switching back and forth....

@woeful stratus yes its doable with an adjusted python script.

managed to get it working for the fenix a320 (script+my MF-config file). No need to switch in the WinCTRl software, needs to stay on CAPT selection. But the script needs to be replaced after every MF-update till it might be native integrated (script will be overwritten after an update).

so might be also possible for the 737.

@woeful stratus i´ve chatgpt let rework the pmdg MF-phyton script according to the working fenix one.
I can´t check as i don´t have the pmdg 737, but worth a try, check it may work also? Let me know 🙂

It creates an LVar to switch between capt & FO mcdu (0 → Captain CDU, 1 → FO CDU).

The script needs to be replaced here (backup the original script):
C:\Users...\AppData\Local\MobiFlight\MobiFlight Connector\Scripts\Winwing\
Then restart mobiflight.
Note 1: inside the winctrl program the mcdu must be set to CAPT side!
Note 2: if it works you need to replace the script after every MF-update till native integration (as the file will be overwritten)
Ad a config line in your profile to switch the displays
I called it: "MCDU DISPLAY SELECTOR (CPT<>FO) @ROW1 - KEY6"
with its code: (L:Mobi_MCDU_Side) 1 + 2 % (>L:Mobi_MCDU_Side)

in the fenix instantly, it only switches the display outputs, not the capt/fo winctrl configuration as it stays on CAPT configuration

maybe only windows extension not shown? it definately must have the .py extension at the end and must have the same name as the delivered original MF-script. (replace it, but make a backup first)

Can you please explain this a little clearer, not sure if I have done it right:

Ad a config line in your profile to switch the displays
I called it: "MCDU DISPLAY SELECTOR (CPT<>FO) @ROW1 - KEY6"
with its code: (L:Mobi_MCDU_Side) 1 + 2 % (>L:Mobi_MCDU_Side)

I already have a button for switching the inputs (ie whether i am pressing buttons for Capt or F0)
And I even had 2 leds to indicate which one i have selected
Just needed the screen change

use your button config line where you switch between capt & fo, (right click and duplicate.)
then rename it (display switch or wahtever you want).
Edit the extened code within the config to: (L:Mobi_MCDU_Side) 1 + 2 % (>L:Mobi_MCDU_Side)

you only the to relace (owerwrite) the original delivered MF-one. The other 2 scripts shown in the video are only the backup (original file, and the delivered modified script again). just in case for a MF-update which overwrites the delivered file again.

due to the switch button. you can also set it manually to check it (but then with a precondition and an addiontal status). Thats what í´ve done

perfect, then set the switch button with precondition and direct 0 (>L:Mobi_MCDU_Side) or 1 (>L:Mobi_MCDU_Side), depending on what active 🙂 (i´ve done the same as (L:Mobi_MCDU_Side) 1 + 2 % (>L:Mobi_MCDU_Side) has a disadvantage may outsync the displays)

my buttons to press between capt or fo are based on variables, so you are asking me to add in presets,,,,im a little confused.....The pre conds are in all the fms buttons like A to Z etc, not the switch between capt or fo buttons

@ruby oxide I guess MF has the websocket addresses for different mcdu "roles" already so the device driver would need to handle routing if the unit changes mode, but it would be quite useful

or even have custom pages that work like NxN character LCD, that would be cool, but also way outside the scope here 🙂

just so you know SimAppPro if OFF, I have reloaded Mobiflight multiple times.
I even tried the py script with the name in the download: pmdg_737_winwing_cdu_side_select.py (it does not work).

I notice that the only text it shows is the smaller text, along with the empty boxes, and somtimes dashes. The LARGER TEXT and any data entered is not shown. If i enter some data in the boxes then the boxes (and data) disappear from the display...

I am not sure but I think I put the new python script in the file AFTER starting MSFS, then worked on it for a while. But I never re started MSFS...maybe that was the factor.....? Or did someone change something else in the background of python scripts?
