Apologies, I don’t work with Aphrodite (I unfortunately don’t really feel a pull to her) and the small bowl in the back is my current offering bowl for Dionysus- I do really like the idea of a glamour bowl because I’m intrigued by glamour magic! Maybe I could swap the bowls so the smaller is glamour (because I’m afraid of tipping the big one when it’s filled with water)

There are a lot of different forms of Hydromancy and I will be honest, it is one of the forms of divination I rarely do (I live in a desert...I have no water in my big three... and while I respect and value water greatly, I don't do much work with it because I don't 'know' it as well).

When I DO attempt it it's more akin to tasseography than anything because I give it a swirl and drop herbs in and then look for symbols once it settles.

Here’s what the altar looks like with the bowl and lit up! I tried the cleansing bowl using: water (regular and rose), sea salt, orange peels, bay leaves, ground rose petals and a few drops of this unidentified pink flower steeped in vanilla perfume- asked for some stuff and submerged my hands in it?? Not too sure what I was meant to do but now my hands feel really soft! I would like to research into hydromancy, glamour and cleansing bowls more so thank you all for your advice (going to try and see if I can combine all three)

Guys, I’m just starting out my witchcraft journey and I am a more closeted which though I can easily get crystals and herbs and stuff and I am wanting to make a secret little altar for pan and I was wondering if it would be disrespectful if occasionally I put like bottle caps I find during a litter cleanup in it. I have an idea to put some dried out plants and stuff inside of them. I don’t know if that would be disrespectful because it was litter to begin with so I don’t know if it would be okay. I tried to look into it online but I didn’t find the answers I wanted

it depends on you and your gods.

some questions to ask yourself:
Is getting something 2nd hand off the street also "litter"? Do you believe all things found outside are not good enough for offering? Is cleaning up spaces from litter something that could be seen as devotion? if so can things you find and cleanse also be used in that manner?

and farthest case: ask your gods!

no ones practice will look the same. ive given my gods a lot of weird things but never with the intent that "these are trash anyway here have them" bc thats not why i picked them

The main thing that I would say is that when you're going to be starting an altar for anybody, I would suggest first: decide what type of altar you want

then start making a list of the things that you associate with them and cross referencing that with a list of what they are associated with

Then see what you can do to access those items or create them yourself in a format that you're comfortable with (printing images/posting pics/buying candles etc)

I felt a weird calling to Aphrodite lately more often than usual (seeing a lot of love/ Aphrodite related things on social media and in real life) so after about 2 weeks of really contemplating if it was actually her i finally decided to make an altar dedicated to her. I can’t put much in it because my parents or family in general don’t know so anything I put in here was mainly from my room or i sculpted it 😁 I tried, I don’t know id I did it right if there even is a wrong way to do it. It’s my first altar so I have no idea how to really do it. I hope it’s good. I plan to put candles in it when I can get them.

I fear a Persephone section has appeared- also an incense board which can hold four at a time! Currently there’s pineapple for Dionysus and sandalwood for Persephone

Then the candle warmer is lavender and grape while the big jar candle is rose and lily- for offerings persephone has rose n spring water with dried orange peel and rose dust inside while Dionysus has regular water with orange peels and bay leaves surrounding it! All other candles are unscented

It’s all very floral and fruity (pun unintended)

Altar update: Persephone on the left (with the statue) and Dionysus on the right (with the glass bowl) with incense sticks in the middle in my potion/wash bowl- Sandalwood and Lavender for Persephone then Pineapple and “Satya Super Hit” (that’s all that’s written on the box- it was highly suggested by the vendor (cool guy) there’s no distinct name but it smells amazing and had really cool and resonate imagery)

Mourning my altar that I’ve spent months crafting as though my accom is bigger and has a nook just begging to be a dedicated altar space the rules state no incense or candles 😔 (hopefully they might be lenient towards it if all safety precautions and measures are taken in addition to vigilance, if not i guess it’s time to invest in electric)

yeahhh thank you- my mum uses those diffuser sticks and plugs around the house all the time so i’ll have to ask them where she gets them!

diffuser sticks are probably more customisable than candles bc all my customisations melt away or just go with the candle (which is cool for sigils because i see it as completion but when i spend an hour airbrushing torches and grapes… 😭)

sometimes i feel like my altars aren't as good as other's how do i stop mental comparison?

this might be helpful:

I had thoughts on "what is an altar"

I believe that the concept of what an altar is kind of messes people up to the point that they push aside any other option that isn't a physical flat surface with adornments and candles and items of importance on it.
In my opinion an altar is a place where you show worship of your entities in ways that fit your living structure. Why can that not be your shower where you take care of yourself, or your bed where you rest, a bench you rest at frequently on your runs?

Or even beyond the physical why not a folder in your camera roll where you shove images that remind you of a god/entity, a Pinterest board of your faves for them, a room in your animal crossing game?
Where do you feel drawn to when you want to worship? Why can that not be your altar as well?

And if labeling those things as altars bring more stress than it's worth again I still 100% agree altars as practice aren't necessary. But an outside look at what an altar can be hopefully helps folks who fall down the rabbit hole of making their practice look like aesthetic witchcore on Pinterest. Some may still want a space like that but the upkeep, the secrecy, or the vibes of it don't work for you. Unconventional in this case doesn't mean it's wrong, especially if it works for you.

That's not how that works! judaism is a closed religion, meaning that you have to be initiated to be a part of it in order to work with the beings inside of it.

You don't get to decide to open it gateway towards a closed entity because that's appropriation

You wouldn't do the same thing for native american deities, and that's what's happening here.

As for the other entites they are open and allowed to be worked with so we can help out there but further insistence on working with closed entites will result in moderation action

im not sure what type of deer the antlers are but i assume whitetail bc i found them at a small town antique store while on a road trip, they had like 10 racks so i assume a collector or hunter had passed and they were donated

the large hanging fur is an opossom and the smaller one is an ermine

the canine skull is a coyote. i also have a mole, rabbit, and raccoon skull

i have a lot of teeth as well from various animals but theyre on my storage shelf

But a lot of what you're going to use for specific deity altar is going to be based on the aspects that that deity has rather than which kind of domain that they are in. if that makes sense?

Because somebody could be cthonic, and then not have the same kind of aspects or correspondences, that another deity in the same area has.

So for an example. I have a bookshelf with altars.

My Hades altar has bone imagery, coins, rocks of abundance, a pot of soil that I bury things in for offerings, crystals or gemstones that are associated with wealth. imagery of dogs, a dog treat, a candle and a perfume in scents that are associated with him. Crowns and more

While my Hekate altar is a bit different with different attributes

Generally, yes, you absolutely can have a singular altar.

I technically have a collective altar for the deities that end up swapping in and out of my practice throughout the year. the ones that stay for the majority of the time will have regular ones, but you can absolutely have a single altar for all of them. The only thing that I would say is when you are providing offerings, maybe specify who it's for so you don't get any confusion

Ah, yeah so depending on where your mentor learned their craft from: palo santo and white sage are things that are very heavily appropriated within witchcraft spaces. the term smudging itself is even something that is highly appropriated, and used to describe overall cleansing when, in fact, it's a native american ritual that is something you can't just pick up and do you must learn from native american people.

an altar is your sacred space, anything you feel drawn to putting on/in it is up to you to decide (exception being a deity altar, then you may need to be a bit more selective with what you put up)

On many deity altars there are crystals and trinkets and other things associated with the deity, sometimes even statues (statues are less common)

this is not required, but that's what I was asking about

again, it's not required to have a valid working relationship with a deity

For example: On my main altar for Brigid (which is stored on a shelf with a moon) I have a bunch of crystals associated with protection because when she reached out to me that's what she said she wanted to help with. Since she's associated with the moon I also got a triple moon engraved worry stone and a painted alpaca statue with moons on it.

On the back in a jar is salt and cinnamon mixed with a sprinkle of ground black pepper (black ash) on the right near the center a spiced candle and on the left warm water mixed with ground cinnamon, in the middle parchment paper with a pen and coin on top.

My alter is very simplistic, a candle for Brigid and blackthorn for Landvættir (land spirits or land wights) a holder for my offerings. Yesterday I was drawn to a specific pink Camellias that was growing on the bush in my garden, and a feeling pick that for me, but I said no I can't wouldn't be right. So this morning I went to the window and the flower was on the ground perfectly shaped, so I went out and got it and placed it on the alter. I feel that because I respected the Landvættir (land spirits) that today they gave it to me to place on her alter.

Thinking about rebuilding my altar entirely, but not sure where to start. Any suggestions?

i would start with maybe seeing about what you want to keep on yours.

then you can figure out what you wanna do with your altar. at its very base its a place for worship and honoring, so what you plan to honor and worship will be the most important

Like what tools and such(divination tools, veils, etc) I want to keep or what do you mean exactly?

well clean slate. some things to think about and reflect on:
what do you feel is the point of having an altar? does anything you own currently reflect that?

I mean I guess the point of having it for me is a little bit of reclamation in a space that isn't so friendly to this kind of thing, as well as maybe a little spiteful

It both makes me happy to have it and I'm also having it as a defiance sort of thing I guess

then what do you find defiant? use that to your advantage

theres no wrong or right way to have and altar. its your sacred space so what goes on it is super just up to you and your needs spiritually.

Well I know my favorite band's music definitely is some level of that

So the CD from them is appropriate there

My mom has a very satanic panic attitude about witchcraft so frankly the entire altar itself is defiant against that no matter what I put on it

It's both serving as being my own sort of space and that I'm just having it out there for me and no one else

But then yeah also that "I'm tired of being silenced, minimized, etc" defiant feeling

I guess I'm not really sure how to answer that other than music being an outlet for it/articulating that sort of thing for me, and then working on not minimizing or subduing myself for others' comfort. Those are the main things that come to mind that I find defiant. It comes both out of a place of "I've spent too long apologizing unnecessarily" and "I'm tired of hiding myself for others' sake"

That's what I want it to represent for me, on top of just being a space to do my own thing and that I enjoy having it. It feels comforting in a way on top of those other things.

I'm not really sure how to translate that into tangible things though other than CDs and other music symbols for the music

I guess maybe some rebirth-esque symbols might be appropriate, since this feels like there's some overlap with that concept

Yeah I guess I'm not really sure what else to answer that with besides music

That and I guess just having the altar itself is defiant in its own right, but I'm not sure what to include on it to that end other than music stuff

I'm at a loss for ideas and haven't really been able to find anything in terms of correspondences as anything to kick start my brain

Even then I don't think the correspondences would necessarily be as strong since I don't have any particular connection to them like I do with music

So I'm not sure what else to really use

But I feel like just stuff related to my favorite band is going to make it look more like an altar to them than a witchy altar

What exactly do you want out of your path and how are you hoping to show that through a space that's dedicated towards it?

Only you can really answer these questions and you should do so after thinking about it.

An altar can be as big or as little as you decide that it is

Nobody else can do that for you, though, because it's not our space. It's yours.

I'm sorry that that's not really helpful but there's no real guide to how to put out an altar because it's not something that has a standard procedure.

What matters is what represents you your craft and your space

I'm starting to get the idea that maybe I need some therapy and introspection type help before I really kind of visit these questions in depth

Because I guess I'm not really sure right now

I like having the altar as a representation of working on unapologetically expressing myself more

And caring less about what others think, since I'm doing it for me

But beyond that at the larger more zoomed out scale you're talking about, I'm not really sure
