I just did a divination session with Lady Freyja I’ve been wanting to spent more time with Her and I’m glad I found the time. She answered all of my questions to Her and I feel like she’s just watching over me fumbling around my cards very amused. This is a pattern so far, all the norse deities I reached out for help in divination always looks amused, I guess I must be funny to them or something.

My guardian is Azreal. He came to me years ago during a tarot card session I was doing. I know most people would have been frightened by his appearance; however it was something I was supposed to carry forward with. No, you can simply pray or chant a vísa in their name, like glorifying the deity to whom you want to give an offering, in the form of a verse. Vísa is basically an old Norse poetic stanza like a little song or spell that skalds used to speak in praise or prayer

Okay.So I just forwarded the question here, since it would be easier for me to answer it that way

When it comes to finding out what deity would best fit your craft, or what if it you i would suggest going through a few different steps!

So for some reason we are aware that there is a strong connection with animals. {Any for that matter but wolves are what really draws to us.] But Deity wise... we are at a loss

One of the first things that you're gonna wanna do is kind of look at the different pantheons, that are available to you!

Some pantheons are not open!

Next, I would go ahead and start looking at your interests. What are things that interest you? What does your craft consist of? Are you drawn yo specifc things?

From there you can kind of make a list of the things that you're interested in, and then the I'll look to see if there are any gods that correspond with those things.

Then it might help to narrow down what pantheon(s) you are open to working to from there? You can, you can narrow your list down even further by only looking for gods within that specific pantheon(s)

I think this is an answer that evolves with time and as you continue to grow in your journey. I am in the belief that you actually have a spiritual court / team that encompasses many different spirits that have agreed to watch over you within this life. This doesn’t necessarily mean deities, but it could really mean any type of spirit: archangels, demons, past-life partners turned spirit guides, ancestors, animal guides, etc. With life and its different seasons, there will be different spirits that feel more aligned with where you are at because they are the ones helping you through that current season. You don’t need to work with a deity if you never really feel called to, and it’s possible that you feel at a loss now but later on you start to feel a closer calling to a certain one. But to answer your question, finding out comes with intuitively feeling it out as much as it does with what your current craft is encompassed with

As for our craft, we love working with herbs, candles and crystals. We love flowers [despite hayfever], Animals we can read and write with as they say it around here. And we love anything dark [colours] Black, red, Blue. We have a dislike for white? Oddly enough. Not sure if that is of any help.

So... following the panteons, putting together what we love, and the way we practice our gut feeling is right. We are going to need to do some more research on it, because we want to be able to respect said deity

Like I mentioned before it’s just something that comes as a part of your journey, you are still learning what those gut feelings even mean. So just keep learning and with time you’ll be able to better identify who the deity even is / if it is a deity or a spirit or maybe even your ancestors

It feels like you’re very fixed on the idea of wanting to figure out who that deity is for you, but they will unfold themselves with time if it is a deity who is aligned with you. Spirits can be funny where they’ll wait until you are ready to reveal themselves

Petitioning doesnt have an exact method (nothing really does tbh)

but its along the lines of (usually) writing out a sort of request to a god and asking them to fulfill that request. its not anything special really its just a method of working with gods

going at it with politeness is the best option, but you dont have to do anything you feel uncomfortable with (ie calling her Mother Hekate isnt for me since seeing my gods as parents is uncomfortable).

if you'd like to use titles feel free, if you want to use specific language feel free, if you want to go the route of dealing with specific goals that some folks practicing Hellenism use feel free! But nothing is really required for being respectful other than like not treating them disrespectfully and going out of your way to do so.

I haven't read the heathenry resources chain so I'm not sure if any of this is repetitive but what I will say as a general tip is to disguise your altar as decor.

I've started working with Hermes recently and in the space I have dedicated to him, I leave little things like coins, feathers, certain crystals that correspond with him, and items from nature that correspond with him too.

It doesn't have to be super out in the open or anything but the bare bones correspondences are easy to hide behind the excuse of aesthetic

I did a similar thing for my familiar's space (who I've been working for for longer). He's a nature spirit so I brought in items from nature that he'd like and made a "nature shelf" of sorts.

This is just what's worked for me though I understand that everyone's circumstances are different ;3

serious question. i’ve been working with lilith for a little bit, not long enough, but i wanted to share a bit of my gratitude and love for her in an offering. it’s a full moon and i’m on my period, so i gave her some of my menstrual ||blood|| on a rose petal and put it on her altar. later, when doing her candle, i absentmindedly used the same rose petal as dressings for her candle. now - i am terrified that maybe i made a grave mistake using my ||blood|| in the first place, and now i am mentally a bit doomed. my ocd has been going absolutely buckwild. i saw something that ||blood|| magic can lead to insanity and depression, and that especially with lilith being the mother of demons, i’m essentially making a pact - i don’t know, i’m just terrified. please, i don’t know what to do.

It might help to set up a system of accountability for both you and the deities that you work with. making sure that you have very clear and very noticeable communication. that allows for very little guessing in terms of what is happening.

Religion and anything around religion is only going to be helpful and fulfilling for you so long as it's something that isn't going to cause you distress or hurt you. because otherwise it then becomes a chore that you have to keep up with and that's not fair to you long term.

It might help to set further boundaries on offerings as a whole: making it very clear that you are only offering in the moment not long term or ones that will affect you for a lifetime unless you're stating otherwise.

So there are a few ways to "find a deity to work with":

• look into deities that hold domain over things your interested in (ex: art gods if your an artist)
• look into deities that you are drawn to (as long as they are from an open pantheon)
• you can wait for signs from deities

however imo there will never be a singular "perfect" deity for someone bc you as a person may change and expand when it comes to your religion through time and that could change who you eventually work with.

There can be beings you are drawn to or interested in or connect with well, but i wouldnt limit yourself to one if you dont need to. There's nothing stopping you from worshipping all 3 of the deities youve mentioned.

There are ways you can look into deities that may suit your current path as well.

Using divination methods you could ask things like:

• what is a symbol of a deities best suited for me right now?
• what kind of deity should i look into to achieve my goals?
• which deities are able to help me on my path?

It a hundred percent could be a normal thing considering that hermes is a trickster god!

In my opinion, you cannot have a patron deity until you have reached a certain level of having a relationship with them. Because patron is a title that you and your deity both have to commonly agree on through extensive conversation. It's not a title that you just give freely. It's one that you give while acknowledging that they are going to be in your life for the rest of your life and possibly future lives (if you believe in those)

Things like seeing symbolism of them, thinking of them, for some: interactions with online spaces bringing them up, getting tarot or other divination based signs.

Dreams are another common way deities reach out.

And if you have clairsenses those too are aspects deities may reach out.

As for "spiritual psychosis": discernment, if this is something you've ruled out medically then its likely not psychosis. Another method is: waiting until youve seen this sign múltiple times. If you see 1 spider, thats not a sign but if you see 7 in 2 days and have ruled out infestation, it might be

So my experience is when I was trying to run away from home I was walking by the sea -trigger warning ⚠️ ||and I had the feeling I should just walk up to it and end it all,|| obviously since I'm here I didn't do that. I said if a deity was reaching out that they should show themselves to me. We got extreme storm surges(it's when the sea moves to the coast due to storms) this year when that never really happens. The logical part of my brain says it might just be global warming or other weather phenomenons involved in the incident but spiritually I feel like whatever I asked is answering, like a literal manifestation of the sea reaching out but well, it ends up being catastrophic. I don't think it's evil or anything like that. Maybe it just doesn't understand that moving the whole sea to the coast is a bad idea. If it was then I have no idea what to do. i was wondering if anyone had any insight for someone who hasn't worked with any specific dieties before. i've considered working with dieties, largely from the pantheon of indian religions as those are my ethnocultural practices but potentially open to looking into other open practices. the crux of it is that i've been wanting to focus more on magic of the sun/daytime/the earth in my practice and thought i would find diety work naturally in those areas. while i respect and work with the moon, i do have a slight fear of the dark/night i was hoping solar work would help me overcome. however, i find myself randomly thinking more of death than usual (not in any concerning way, but in a philosophical/appreciatory/circle of life type of way) and feeling a strong presence of something in the dark or standing by my bedside. i think thats why ive always been afraid of the dark, bc its always felt like someone is there, never just empty space -- but moreso now that i think my energy is a bit clearer than its been in a long time. so, i'm at a bit of a crossroads. part of me wonders if working with such energies can help me find peace in it. but i'm not ina place in my life where i can handle major upheaval and transformation, which i hear is common for these dieties (ex: Hinduism's Kali) as i'm just coming off of such patterns. anyone have experience of what its like to work with dieties that rule that night, or any general advice? much appreciated <3 <3

so as someone that works with non-hindu deities i can only speak for deities in those domains that are from other pantheons and my personal experience with them

I think that when it largely comes down to is through working with entities that rule over darkness or night, there are oftentimes when they as entities become a sort of comfort in that through helping you address and change your outlook on things that go bump in the night if that makes sense

Which you've noted!

A lot of times that sense of fear stems from the concept of things in the night rather than the actual existence of it? so they can help you address that by giving you protection and comfort during those times

But if you don't feel ready and it's not something that you're capable of handling at the moment.It's okay to allow yourself to wait until you are.

Most entities in this domain know that these things aren't easy to handle and don't tend to push into wanting to work with you before you're capable of handling it.

A lot of times they were pushed into the night through means that we're not their own so they don't tend to do the same unto others.

• hekate is a god that enters and leaves my practice regularly! i have a rotating system for deity work and she is with the group that comes in the winter!
• nyx is a year round deity for me and i love interacting with her.

No you're entirely okay! so the way that mine works is that my list of deities rotates throughout the seasons! it's not necessarily like differentiating based on pantheon, more so that some deities rule over seasonal aspects.

For example, during the winter, a lot of my winter gods come out, as well as ones that deal with mental fortitude and darkness/||death|| because of how my practice works.

In the springtime some of the more ||death|| related gods rotate out and my spring gods come in.

And so on and so forth

I have a really in depth experience of finding my deity that I would like to share and maybe hear feedback on if possible. Forewarning it is long and takes place over the course of four-ish months

So to start at the beginning, when I was 13 or so, I had an accidental astral projection experience where I saw what LOOKED like a reaper floating over my sleeping body, paying my floating observer self no attention. It didnt do anything to me, it just seemed curious. This experience opened my eyes to the realm of unseen things. Also important, my moms side of the family is very strictly Christian and my dad (theyre separated) is very spiritual, started out learning shamanism from tribes and Indigenous groups, taking part in ceremonies for spiritual growth. Other important context for later, I struggle immensely with visualization because I have intense auditory thoughts. I hear every thought, every word like a voice in my head but its loud and I can never turn it off.

My partner, whom Ive lived with now for almost a year, is a witch and their mom is too. As Ive lived with my partner, Ive slowly been picking up on Tarot and learning about crystals again. Queue up September, my dad and his partner came to visit my gf and I at our apartment. During this visit, my dad shared more of his journey with me and I felt, for the first time, this spark ignite within me for spiritual growth. A drive I hadnt had in previous experiences of learning from him

I started heavily looking into different spiritual cultures, Shamanism, duhla work, Animism, Spiritualism. I reached out to Shaman communities to work on my meditation and to learn from them, I signed up for guided meditations from them (which didnt end up happening but theyre important for later). Specifically the meditation was Navigating Your Inner Spirit and the Spirit World. I had also bought a book to help me with meditation from Book Bin. It was called "Ask Your Guides - Connecting to Your Divine Support System" by Sonia Choquette (havent started reading it, but its important for later). I would also like to importantly note that this is BEFORE I became interested in witchcraft or deities or anything.

I began seriously applying myself to learning belly breathing, meditating daily, feeling my energy move through my body. I got to the point where I could feel my energy and direct it through my body, I worked on grounding visualization (which was hard because I suck at visualization, but with practice I got there). I would visualize roots connecting from my spine down into the earth.

Eventually, my partners mom let me borrow some books on witchcraft after hearing my interest in those other cultures, we began talking about Paganism. I began to feel a little overwhelmed by everything, like I needed community to help learn, or a guide. I started seeking working with a deity or presence. From the book, I learned how to protect myself during basic rituals and I read about working with deities, how some align more than others with you, how some may not WANT to work with you, how some are harder to understand or interpret than others. I decided I was going to do a ritual to invite presences aligned with my highest good.

I went out to prepare, got selenite and a few other crystals for protection and spiritual connection. I created a small altar space on the floor using a board I found, placed a bowl of water as an offering. I began meditating and grounding myself. When I was ready, I spoke my ritual invocation which was inviting presences aligned with my highest good, all else was banished and unwelcome. I then sat quietly for about twenty minutes, just meditating and being aware of my moment.

I experienced quite a few things in that twenty minute period. One of the first things that happened was I heard the sound of a click or snap. My eyes were closed, but I knew the sound came from the top left corner of the room, which has nothing occupying that space. No lights, no decor, nothing. Shortly after that, I had intense visualization (which is significant because of my visualization issues). I very clearly saw the bedroom door behind me, and then three knocks on the door, a slight pause and then three more knocks, another slight pause, three more knocks (three repititions of three knocks) and that was IMMEDIATELY followed up by the image of a bright orange pumpkin, uncarved. Shortly after I saw a scarecrow and either a raven or crow (didnt know how to tell the difference at the time). I just let the thoughts happen to me, I didnt dive into them. I heard noise from my candle and opened my eyes, it was moving in very peculiar motions, as though being controlled. Not rapid wild flickering, but deliberate, stable movement to the left. I began saying that I honored whoever was there with me and welcome further communication in a way thats safe for me and comfortablenfor them. Before long, I heard this really wispy sound in the room with me. Like soft whispering but unintelligible. When it stopped, I stated that the ritual was over, the invitation is closed, and that all presences not aligned with my highest good that seek to work further with me must now leave. I also stated that I welcomed communication over the next few days. I journaled my experience.

Immediately after, one of my cats was acting really peculiar. He was obsessed with our bathroom and when I let him in, he went straight to the bathtub. Now, hes had baths before, he hates the tub. But he was making all sorts of weird noises trying to get to the tub and then he just... jumped in. The SECOND that he did, he went quiet (my curtain obstructed my view of him).

The next morning I had six synchronicities of the bright orange pumpkin before I had even left my bedroom. I found this peculiar because of all the visualization I had seen, the pumpkin stood out to me the least, I had been more interested in the scarecrow. Some of these synchronicities were completely out of my control as well. My partner had asked me to look up a store they wanted to visit that day and when I did, one of the images on their website was a literal wooden sign that had the word pumpkin on it.

That entire day was filled with more synchronicities, but later on, I also had thought manifestations. Walking into a store, I had had the thought that I should get a small uncarved pumpkin for my small altar to honor the presence. Similarly, I thought it would be awesome to find pumpkin earrings that I could wear. After about 30 seconds of being in the store, I rounded the corner and found a bowl of small uncarved bright orange pumpkins. Exactly how I had seen them in my mind. I felt a feeling and looked across the aisle, and there they were. My eyes had landed perfectly on pumpkin earrings. I purchased both and put the earrings in, the pumpkin on the altar.

I had been placing Desert Rose above my head while I slept to encourage dream connection and one night I had five different dreams of witchcraft and being a witch. This was the first time I had remembered a dream in well over a week. During all of this time, I was continuing my witchcraft studies, and had decided that I was officially a Pagan and that I believed in Gods/Goddesses and lesser deities across all cultures and pantheons. I tried to figure out the presence that was with me. The most I could really determine from everything was that theyre a liminal presence and that they didnt actually want me to know who they were yet, if they even had an identity in the way we would recognize (understanding the potential that it could be a liminal presence of a process that occurs during the inbetween spaces, the same way gravity works as a process).

Later on, my partner and I were checking out different occult shops. I had been feeling the desire to share my experience with someone other than my partner but had not yet up to this point. Then I did. I spoke with a very open lady at an occult shop. She said it sounded as though it could be Hekate, which is her deity that shes devoted to. I was unfamiliar with Hekate but didnt feel a connection.

Over time, I began to do short meditation rituals in my altar space and would light the candle. I began feeling my crown vibrate and spread through my body, as the candle did the deliberate lefthand movements (important to note that I had AC off, windows closed). I began to feel this feeling more when I thought about the presence.

My partner and I went to Rasani Fair in Albany and I happened to meet the same lady I had met before. It was interesting because I had actually been thinking about her again, wanting to tell her more of my experiences. I got her name finally.

During my school term, I drifted a bit from my practice, and was undergoing a lot of pain from my emotional suppression and traumas that were impacting me more heavily at this time.

We went to an event for Samhain and I felt more connected and pulled back to witchcraft again. I began getting involved again, reading more. Sometime around this period, two of the lights in my kitchen began flickering. Once or twice a day usually. Ive checked the bulbs, their tight, the neighbor apartments dont experience the issue, and to this day, theyve never burnt out. Additionally, less frequently we get a knock on our walls. Maybe once a week.

Ive experienced being gently nudged (I thought one of my cats had pressed my blanket against me but when I sat up, they were all asleep on the other side of the room).

One night while my partner and I were laying on the couch in the living room, the book I had bought before, the Ask Your Guides book, was visible from a shelf. I joked with my partner that maybe the presence wanted me to read it so we could learn to communicate better. Then a sudden knowing hit me. I realized I had been led to exactly that moment of realization. The book I bought, and the guided meditation before I was even interested in deities, the book my partners mom gave me that tunneled me into paganism, the ritual I did, my awareness opening to it. It wanted me there. The moment I had that realization, I smiled and thought about how lucky I was. That I of all people had this presence that wanted to guide me and work with me. My entire body began to vibrate intensely. Not in an overwhelming way, but in an excited like, "You figured it out!" type of way. (I have ASD) and the sensation began to feel like a lot, so I sat up a bit and the sensation died back, but in that moment, every ounce of skepticism washed away. I knew completely that there was no mistaking my experience anymore for something else (also why I journaled everything, so I could look back and connect my patterns).

Recently, I began to be interested in working with a deity again and I pursued figuring out deities across many cultures and pantheons that aligned with me and my values. I had a list of 28 and was working on researching one a day. Hekate was at the top of the list and was the first one I researched. I actually did very little research into her (because I ran out of time that day) and Athena was the next day. I figured out very quickly that I didnt align with her because of the way her pride has pushed her to punish others.

That evening I took a dark shower. Ive never tried it before and have always wanted to. I did my actual showering first and then turned the light off and got comfortable (I have a suction pillow for baths). During that experience, I felt a gentle wind or blowing on the left side of my face. It made me smile. I began talking to the presence, stating that I felt ready to proceed with them. In the inky blackness when youre eyes form shapes and colors, I began to see the silhouette of a face in front of me. Or a head facing my way. I didnt feel uncomfortable.

That evening I did a deity idenfication tarot spread. There was a straight diss against pride and being prideful of knowledge, accepting when youre out of your depth and need help. The potential relationship card stated that our relationship would be long term, and that they didnt want me to give up being in the material world, that perfectionism is a lie and that I dont need to be perfect for them, and that our relationship will grow as we do. The actual identity card was challenging though. It was a feminine energy card (cups) relating to emotions and vulnerability (things Ive been struggling with) but the card itself depicted a child standing in a circle of light with their mother reaching to them.

Also that evening, I educated myself on the lefthand path. It had always been something I frowned about but I also recognized I knew very little about it. I can say now my distaste was from a misconception about causing harm, and I didnt fully understand the "why" of things. The more I read, the more I realized that it made sense to me, that if anything, I actually understood and agreed with what I was learning. That just as one knows how to heal, they too know how to harm, and that sometimes inaction may cause more harm than acting. That sometimes the responsibility is that because I can, sometimes I must. Not that because I can, I will. Its a burden, not something to feel good about. But that sometimes monsters must be held accountable for their actions to reduce their harm in the future. When I got out of the dark shower, the movie How To Train Your Dragon popped into my head. In that movie, Hiccup states he cannot and will not kill dragons. He chooses to study them, to understand them. But at the end of the movie, he and his companion DO kill a dragon, because they must. Because if they had not, everyone would have died. That sometimes because you can, you must. It was a very clear lesson to me.

That night, I put everything together. Hekate had been with me from the VERY beginning. Lighting my way before I even knew about witchcraft. That the tarot card depicted the traumas I had to face, my inner child that needed healing, and that shes been helping me get there. When I put everything together, I felt my crown vibrate, a warmth spread through me, and a stable gentle pressure in my chest.

The next day I dedicated myself to learning more about her. But more than that, Ive been having to face my traumas. I went through a long period of numbness and apathy, feeling like nothing mattered anymore and felt total hopelessness (it lasted most of the evening). My partner and I were laying down and I had my face buried in their chest just feeling awful. We put music on and I felt my emotions flood forth. I felt the wall of vulnerability and chose to let go, and I started bawling. In the midst of that, a like from Hekate and Is tarot spread popped into my head, saying that I didnt have to be perfect. I realized this pain was part of the lesson. That I had to face it to grow.

The following morning my partner left for work before I was up but had left a note for me. It said that Im a star, and like a star, they cannot shine without darkness. And I realized thats exactly what my process was that I was going through. A star must work through the darkness to see its own shine, but once it sees that shine, the darkness can never touch it again. Hekate didnt want me to suppress the bad parts, she wanted to me control them, not them control me. See my darkness and my shine.

Its only been a few days since Ive known it was her, but I feel transformed already. Ive gained better control of my emotions and felt her presence with me during times of duress

I communicate to her just by praying, speaking to her, I think to her in my mind. I often times look to the moon at night and say her name, tell her I honor and respect her.

She communicates with me in all sorts of ways. Its frequently different but tarot spreads have been a big one recently. Synchronicities, lessons, nudges of intuition, realizations. Often times I have realizations that are followed up by a vibration and warmth spreading through my body, her way of saying "Yes I wanted you to see this"

But shes also physically nudged me, blown air gently against me, shown herself (in a way. I saw her silhouette while in pitch black conditions). My eyes formed her face in the inky blackness while I was showering in the dark once (bathtubs are a liminal space and shes also Goddess of Liminality so I try to communicate in those places sometimes)

Cernunnos is a celtic deity and is earliest attested in Gualish (pre-christian french) practice with links to irish and scottish heros as well. so he is linked to a specific pantheon

I dont worship Brigid specifically, but I do honor each Sabbat and will be doing some stuff for her on Imbolc :)

I like Samhain personally. Its the closest to my birthday, I love that season in general (Fall) because all the trees leaves change color

It was also the first Sabbat I ever celebrated as a witch

Im still within my first year of being a witch so Im learning about each one more in depth as I go. I bought the Llewellyn sabbat books and am reading each one as it approaches, copying certain things down into my grimoire like crafts and recipes or sabbat specific spells and divination. This will be my first Imbolc!

some of the resource channels go "dormant" if not spoken in for a week so you have to look through the #1113290782007369859 channel and follow them!

I worship a lot of deities and think it might make sense for me to go seasonal so each of the deities gets enough attention

yup! there are a few! my patrons are year round (lucifer and hades), as well as some non-seasonal dependant ones Aphrodite, Hylia, Nyx, Gabriel

For others a lot of them already have associated time frames: Aine for example is a summer god, Marzanna and Cailleach are winter gods!

There are some that are for the transitional seasons, that while not explicitly for those seasons tend to be more prevalent in my practice around those times: Airmid and Lada for spring, Hekate and Mokosh for autumn.

there are some that enter and leave through out those times on a non-standard basis (Hel and Loki being the biggest but Morrigan is also there)

In large part i sat down and tried to understand when i would need help from these deities and how they could help me during these transitional times!

Okay a quick search says thay Hinduism is known for its inclusivity, honoring anyone who seeks to give intentional devotion, but respectful engagement is key. Learn the cultural context and avoid superficial appropriation.

Hinduism promotes seeking all paths leading to the same divine truth

Faith and devotion to Hindu deities is not tied to ethnicity or ancestry, as much as respectful engagement or if there are specific deities that do require that (as there are hundreds)

Its known as Dharma

So depending on the specific deity, as long as part of their teaching doesnt require that tie, its open to inclusivity through respectful engagement

Reading peoples accounts who have asked questions on Quora and Reddit suggest the same

i think the main question to ask is like:
do i have to be a part of the hindu religion to honor the deities? bc based on what it is saying "all paths leading to the divine truth" it seems like becoming hindu (religiously) is the main goal of worshiping their gods.

bc you would need to honor hindu gods in a hindu manner and can you (feasibly) do that without being hindu?
