Basics for entity communication
these basics (which the server has dubbed bernie's basics) are essential to master before contacting deities or entities!

to master a skill, you should know what exactly the skill is, why it's performed and how it's used, know several methods of performing each skill, and have actually tested the skill and used it successfully regularly!

cleansing: clearing your space and/or your body of unwanted energies! smoke cleansing, sound cleansing, visualization, etc
grounding: becoming aware of your physical self and connecting with your surroundings! promotes spiritual + mental stability and focus
protections: keeping yourself spiritually safe! can be done in a variety of ways - spellwork, talismans, sigils, etc
banishing: getting any entity that you don't want in your space out! the lesser banishing ritual of the pentagram (lbrp) is an example of a well-known banishing ritual.
vetting: making sure that the deity is who they say they are and is not a trickster spirit/something other than what they say they are. pendulums are frequently used to ask questions about the deities' mythos to verify they are not a trickster spirit/something other than what they say they are.

as always, make sure to do outside research as well and utilize your discernment!

generally I would suggest making sure that you have proper protections in place you do a very thorough cleansing of your space and you create wards to block out anything further from being able to influence you and your space

personally in my own upg (unverified genosis/unverified opinion), he feels very calm/grounded and also very wise, i like to say since i work with both Apollo and Helios, that Helios is like the core of the sun while Apollo is like a solar flare/surface of the sun (energy wise); Helios def is very stable and grounded and very kind hearted, i enjoy working with him on numerous things including shadow work things esp with self confidence and courage (think of solarly things since like thats part of his domain/he is the personification of the sun) as well as some research. I feel like he is a guide that is gentler with me at least for things esp when life is tough though also he has given me honest feedback i need. i think again this depends on the person but i find him at least to be very grounded and wise deity (again solar lol)

I read that (someone correct me if I’m wrong🙏) Aphrodisia was usually around the 4th day of Hekatombaion, which started on the first new moon after the summer solstice - in the northern hemisphere the first new moon after the summer solstice is on the 25th June this year sooo I gathered that the 4th day after the new moon is the 29th😅

But the dates for this festival were not set in stone and were different in other places! So take this with a pinch of salt

I would also say that the concept of devotee vs something like patronee might be whats getting confused?

patrons and patronees are life long (and can extend to multiple lives) and definitely, shouldn't be done until you've had at least a year of practice with that particular deity, in my opinion.

its not a simple thing to do and def should be made after a lot of discussion between both parties bc you cant like "take back" that kind of commitment

late but I think it depends on the group. Different groups of pagans use the same words to mean different things. I think everyone has their own interpretaion of what a devotee is but usually I see it as you are primarily worshipping that god and they are the primary god that guides you. I describe myself as Dionysus devotee because while I do worship the other gods I have a seperate altar for him and he is the god I spend the most time doing stuff for if that makes sense

I also have seen people say devotee is you ONLY worship that god but I'm not sure how I feel about that I dont like that definition personally

hey y’all- I did a really quick and small offering for Persephone/kore the other day the usual burning incense and a paper saying it’s for her “please accept this offering” as a way to test the waters, one paper said Persephone the other said kore bc i was a but confused on the names- anyway i left the candle burning and kinda combined the offering w burning the candle Dionysus ! fell asleep didn’t think anything of it, made sure the candle was on an open safe surface next to the window with it open

I dont know if I personally see any signifiers of gods, but I know both Persephone and Dionysus are gods of intense powerful change. I cant speak much on persephone, but Dionysus specifically has power over really intense changes like that. The type of changes that involve destroying and rebuilding yourself, if that makes sense. This might be a really personal question but do you have any religious guilt or gender related stuff? Dionysus also has domain over gender type stuff so there might be an element of that. I agree w others that divination is a good option for clarification.

I understand what you mean especially w Christianity theres a lot of elements of punishment but I can assure you even if you do have the christian god as part of your belief systems or practices that will not happen. The vibe I get is a lot of worries about social expectations, especially with the 1950s kitchen I think. If I had to guess and I am no expert, I would maybe say that Dionysus and Persephone (again I dont rly work w her much so idk for sure) might be encouraging you to let go of expectations you have for yourself both consciously and unconsciously and forgiving yourself for not living up to them. Your value isn’t in your ability to succeed in whatever way you feel the need to. Happiness, however you can reach it with what you have, including finding the balance between family culture and personal spiritual practices will make you feel more fulfilled, and thats the type of success that matters in this life.

Im no expert tho so Id still recommend div and ultimately I think you’re going to know the most about what the dream means since if it is a message its for you to understand

I was going to add that i looked at the dream meaning resource in the server and the point about creativity was interesting because I’m starting my illustration degree in September and being creative/artistic is a huge part of my social, personal and academic identities

So I want to say that historically, the greek pantheon was worshipped as a whole

The concept that you are working with individualized gods for the entirety of your practice is a very nice, a new kind of belief system, and in my opinion, kind of dismisses, the fact that all of these gods are connected in some way shape or form.

Imo there are no gods in hellenism that will be angry at you for working with other deities. Ancient people worshipped the entire pantheon and myths of gods in conflict could actually be a sign that the two temples of the god had a good relationship

I agree, most polytheistic religions often also have syncretism with other pantheons so the idea that they would limit you to just worship one of them is rare. That being said there have been people who dedicate themselves to one deity both in modern times and historically but its rare and usually its not strict. Gods understand that we are human and we suffer from things like mental health issues that result in traumatic intrusive thoughts. Gods might be able to see everything and hear everything but that means that they can also see and hear that its intrusive meaning unwanted and not something you are thinking / feeling willingly

To add onto this I would also say a lot of people especially on tik tok have an almost d&d cleric, fantasy rpg view of how gods work in general, and I personally believe this is an instance where it shows a lot. A lot of people act like the gods domains are hyper specific and cannot mix ie Hera is the goddess of rulership which means no other god can be the god of rulership. In reality they would mix quite often especially from city to city, even from family to family and it was not unheard of for people to create their own specialized epithets from person to person. Individuals who had a lot of reciprocity with a god would often pray to them for things like protection and guidence, even if they were not specifically gods of wisdom or protection. I personally don’t see the gods as omnipotent but I do think their power can easily extend over to domains that other gods would typically have. Historically it really just depends on that city in that specific time in that specific culture. In many doric cities (ie sparta) most gods have a war epithet and almost all the gods have a cthonic epithet, but only some are considered ‘cthonic.’ Both Helios and Apollo have sun associations and the ancients did not see that as contradictory. Imo its a little silly to limit their domains based on some arbitrary rule like needing a specific number of epithets, myths or something like that

of course! some deities may prefer that to formal written prayers and some might want to keep the relationship more professional but just chatting/talking to your deities can be a devotional act as well, tell them about your day, what you enjoyed, how much you are inspired by them, etc!

You have to be respectful not professional

but this is to remind people in general that you have to be respectful of the deity you are honoring as they have cultural context behind them! it’s like yeah every practice is personal and not everyone is gonna honor their deities the same way i do but there are still guidelines you gotta stick to
like obviously there are hard no’s like bl00d offerings, most intimidate offerings (if you’re a beginner), etc.
and a lot of witches from what i’ve seen ignore this completely!
also claim bonkers things like “worshipping hekate is a closed practice and you’d have to be at a near death experience to worship her” like what?

on today’s ep of odd deity worship, I have a special Nigerian seven up bottle that, after the bottle was finished I washed n use to store water in my fridge as glass just makes it that little bit crispier- I thought since I forgot to replace Dionysus’s shot glass with literally anything that idk extra crisp water instead of straight from bottled 🤷🏾

my dumb ass placed the bottle on the altar (but the altar is my windowsill above my bed so idk where else I’d place it) and when I realised I was like heyyyy girl… I didn’t mean to put that down it’s not an offering I’m so sorry, this happened like twice because I was trying to multitask with lighting bay leaves and when I put the bottle back in the fridge I got charcoal in the water I put out, went to replace the water and put the bottle back but when I took it away my candles got very active 😔
