#Floating/loose items disappearing shortly after entering new level

Hi! Just wanted to check if this behavior that I’ve observed is intentional or a bug, or maybe a bit of both?

Many times upon completing a level, I have more than I can carry in food, and instead of leaving them in the previous level, I try to carry them with me. I do this by throwing them down into the next level. My inventory slots being full already, what I’ve observed is that if I am not physically holding them in my hands, after walking a short distance (maybe crossing an area boundary perhaps), anything floating will just disappear.

I’ve seen something happen right around the same time, the opening from which I jumped down seems to get sealed right around this same travel distance. So I’m wondering if something is resetting when that happens, and in this case also wipes out any loose/floating items that I transferred down with me.

On another occasion, in the entrance of the new level, I spotted a secret passage immediately (which was a nice roll IMO), and upon breaking the wall I was immediately able to see the Rabid Bearskin relic floating there … I proceeded to go get it and … well suddenly as I entered the secret room it disappeared! Made me wonder if it’s related to the loose/floating items behavior and the timing of when the opening from the previous level gets sealed.

Anyway, I asked about this being intentional as an open question on preventing players from transferring too many items as they go from level to level, and not intentional because this same mechanism might be wiping out items it shouldn’t? Or am I just mixing up too many unrelated things? Thanks!

The items disappearing is triggered by the previous world generator getting disabled and removing everything it contains. Right now, if you carry food over to the next dungeon, it will often get cleared. I think we have a fix for this somewhere on our todo list, but we haven't had time to look at it yet.

What do you mean by disappeared? Was the secret room just empty afterwards? Was it on a podest or just floating around somewhere?

Hi @mossy pewter the relic was on a pedestal (or is that called the podest?), as I’ve seen other relics appear before. And as I approached it from the entry room, it just vanished. The pedestal was still there. Hope that helps!

I do this all the time. When you exit the first room of any level, the starting room gets replaced with a version that has a big rock blocking the path back "up" (not that the player really had any way of getting back up)
When this happens, if you've tossed food or orbs down into that room that you had carried with you, anything you aren't actively holding in your hands will despawn.
I had always assumed it was for balance. I'd be running back and forth carrying 2 dozen fruits and orbs all the way down to the beast otherwise.
It's been a while since I checked last, but even if you toss the food/orb into the next room, so that it's not in the starting room, it will still be removed when the blocking boulder generates. Only what is in your hands carries over, so max of 4 items.
Almost all starting rooms have some sort of pit, so this is a great time to toss food in, if you have Pit Friend active.
