I was fighting the second room of skulls in the beast's cradle. As I was finishing them off, the beast started clipping through the floor after me into the 3rd phase of its attack patterns. I was able to kill it and get the journal page even though I wasn't in the central arena. (See screenshot of journal page after killing the boss - note the dead skulls on the ground behind it.)
