I am about to test a bunch of leather pieces painted and coated with different brands of paint. I want to create a bend test. Obviously I can simply bend each of them by hand for a while and count it good. But there might be a silly and simple way to do it automatically, too.

Imagine, if you will, about 16 pieces of leather that I want to bend in the same way (if not at the same time). How could I bend them in such a fashion as to be comparable?

Be imaginative, be silly, be serious, I'm here for all of it.

Ready? Set? GO!

Seeding the thoughts with this idea:
Tape them to my washer and dryer (one end on each as they are side-by-side) then run a cycle of laundry. The spin cycle on my dryer makes it wiggle a fair amount and I suspect it would do the trick.

For bonus points I might add a bit of elevation to one end of the leather (like tape them to a board attached to one machine or the other) at one end.

Tape it to your car tire and road trip

Tape the pieces to a hand held massager. This allows you to time the bending so you get an equal amount of bending per piece.

Most hand held massagers have a cushion ball, tape the piece around that.

Screw one side to a 2x4, and the other side to another 2x4, and then open and close them like a weird long skinny book. That way you can test both a concave then a convex bend on all the pieces at once. Your tasting for a pair of boots right? This would sort of mimic the way a toe box bends

You might need a friend to help control the other end, or you could do it in shorter lengths

I like this one. Then nail one side to a door frame and the other side to the door. And rig up an oscillating fan to swing the door back and forth. A practical solution that would not at all be designed by Rube Goldberg.

Cant you throw it in the dryer without heating? Just let it roll around?
Cement Mixer would be another solution.

It’s a thought. But I would worry the leather never actually bent. Just bounced around. OTOH, bouncing around would accurately simulate wear and tear on the paint and sealed surfaces.
