So I got a leather working kit for Christmas and I’ve been wanting to make leather shoes for a while and I was like “how hard could it be”(spoiler, pretty hard) I watched some videos to make a template and I’m pretty sure I used the totally wrong for this but it was what I could find so I was going for moccasins but the only template I could find was for like slippers so I had to add leather to the heel to make if go up my leg a bit to achieve the look I was going for. I ended up with a pair of “shoes” which were really just leather socks pretty much because I used pretty thin leather. I wore them enough to stretch them out enough to put in aftermarket insoles that you would put in sneakers or hiking boots. There still soft soles just now they have soles not just a thin layer of leather. Anyway this is what they look like
#Not the right project for my first time with leather but I managed

Very cool I was going to make myself a pair of boots very soon
It’s a lot of fun but I would recommend knowing what your doing before you start
Made my ex a set of moccasins this is not much different
That’s pretty good for a first try. I would suggest turn shoes as a first shoe for the novice cordwainer. They have the advantage of looking medieval (European) when done as apposed to a Native American moccasin. Right on with the insert too. The toggle shoes (a variant of turn shoe) that I made include inserts that make a huge difference. Not visible from the outside so why not?
I really should have done turn shoes. I have no idea why but I was really set on moccasins. I’ll probably invest in some better leather and do turn shoes in the future
Yea shoes are a nightmare starting out!
Honestly i would've recommended buying a premade "self assemble" kit and copying the pattern from them and modding it to your liking!
Also get you a sheet of shoe crepe and some contact cement to add a custom fit rubber outsole! They're around $20 on amazon and one sheet can do a single pair!
Thank you
