hello hello! Some may remember me from the last time I had a problem with a sewing machine. This is a new/old sewing machine (new to me, bought used), and it was working perfectly fine while I was testing it out and making sure the tension was right for the fabric I’m using etc., but of course as soon as I thought I was ready to actually start the project I ran into trouble. The needle thread keeps getting caught under the needle plate and causing these weird massive loops that stop the machine. If I wiggle the balance wheel back and forth I’m able to get the tangle of fabric and thread out, but I can’t sew without it doing this. I tried adjusting the tension a bit, but this is not little tiny loops like when the tension is off. Not sure if I’m describing it well but does anyone have some troubleshooting tips?

Definitely a tension problem, but the why can have a few causes.

Go through a checklist.
1 test stitch on scraps of your chosen fabric. Fabric does make a difference.

I think you are describing what she replicates around 38 minutes, see how she corrects.

Ok thank you! Seeing her tension issue made me take another look and realize it was a problem with the spool of thread itself. The one I was using was spinning too loosely (there’s no cap of any sort to keep it from wobbling) so I tried a different style spool which mostly fixed the problem though I still had to put it at the highest tension (probably also has to do with the cloth I’m using). Don’t know why the first spool worked at first but not after the first couple tests… thank you for the help!

I think the little spool caps can be bought as replacements - you might want to look at sourcing some?

(I almost lost one to the gap under a wardrobe this year which is why I started looking at replacing mine... But it turned out I could get it back, it hadn't completely vanished into the darkness)

That’s a good idea. I might do a temporary one out of cardboard or something (I just moved so I have A Lot of it) but I’ll definitely look into an actual replacement
