#Looking for a leather lining material

I’m working on leather armor for my LARP character. I’ve got a pattern, and I picked up a side of chrome-tan leather from Tandy that was a good price.

Problem is, I wanted to use a material like suede to line the inside of the piece. But Tandy’s selection of suede/thin leathers are only in smaller cuts. If I bought enough suede to match the leather I’d bought, it’d more than double my material costs.

Is there a better way I’m missing?

Maybe Joanne's they have suede far as I know

first of all, why chrome for armour, second of all, do you really need a liner?

#

because it will double the required square footage of leather. And if you live in the states, get suede from Weaver, they're suedes are amazing. I got samples of most of their colours and it's all beautiful. Cost me like, nearly $100 in handling fees for a $50 order, but hey

Could just line it with fabric instead of leather.................should be cheaper

Definitely shop around online a bit...........at least if you are dead set on lining it at all (not necessary mind you), and definitely shop around if you want to do it with leather

I should clarify, I’m making a leather jerkin. So less “armor” and more “leather clothing”. That’s why I went with chrome-tan. But in the LARP I’m playing, it’s worth armor points.

ah, that makes way more sense

Following up with this, I can see some polyester faux suedes that might be a good substitute for the lining. Anyone know if this would be a good/bad idea? I try to avoid polyester in clothing materials as a rule, but idk if it matters if the lining doesn’t breathe, when the shell is leather anyway.

for sure line it if any of it will be touching your skin for long periods. chromium salts are toxic after extended exposure.

That's not true anymore. Modern chromium is fine, from every source I've heard.

In any case, I’d be wearing a base-layer shirt under it. There shouldn’t be any skin contact.

I'd go with fabric to line it, but not polyester. Polyester lining is the worst. I recommend having your base layer be linen for maximum comfort.

yeah never use polyester for anything... you might as well just wear a plastic bag...

find a good cotton or linen, more comfort where it touches skin, breathes and is anti-bacterial, which will help with clothing that can't be laundered

I have a full rant about polyester (that I will only post if it's requested). It's the worst. I regret ever using it in any project I've ever worked on. I should've started lining things in muslin or linen much earlier than I did.

@soft pecan Anything you wear esp. outside alot does not do well with poly... other stuff like bags... or such its fine... shrugs... just always better for anything like this is to wear natural

soft pecan

I was making the point that poly as clothing is only good at being away from your skin and in use only temporarily. I vastly prefer natural, but some people have weird tastes.

What's up with polyester? I think I missed the memo.

its like wearing a plastic bag... it does not breathe and it traps heat... like I said its like wearing a plastic bag

It is a plastic bag - check what your material is made of, any petrochemical material is basically plastic. They might have uses (swim suits, wet weather gear) but that's generally going to be where you either are exposed to lots of water intentionally or trying to avoid getting wet.

But at the same time, we’re talking about lining for a leather garment, which probably doesn’t breathe the way that fabric would anyway.

covert lotus
#

not true.... poly would make it 10x worse than lining it with cotton or linen

Does it matter that we’re also not talking about, like, polyester t-shirt fabric? I was looking to use faux suede
