#Buying a Cloak

@near temple I have a pattern for a quick cloak if you want wont take but 30 min to make.
How do you get your measurements? Also, do you sew two yards together top to bottom?
My measurements are knee to shoulder up my back
And hood measurement is measure shoulder over my head to shoulder by a 12 inch deep
You could go mid calf up to shoulder also if need be
For the length of the cloak
So how would I get the full circle one. Because I want to be able to pull my cloak around me. Do I sew two yards together?
For a quick stitch I use a whip stitch
It depends on how much cloth you have
I don't have any, I'd have to buy it by the yard.
Ok how tall are you?
Because most cloth is buy a yard but it is like 40” in length or 50” in length
K, yeah so I'd have to sew two together.
Or buy 4 to 5 yards and make sure it is over 50” in length
Back sorry had to do quick math
Thank you so much. I think I will give it a go. I might just buy a wool cloak because wool is pretty expensive by the yard. I might use the Army blankets some people use, I'd have to measure to see how much I need.
50” is about 4.16’
If you go the army blanket route I have a vid you can watch I’ll message it to you direct In message
I found it, thanks. Will have to give that one a watch.
Also Dave Canterbury has a vid on that also
Cool!
Yeah, wool would be nice for Winter and early Spring. It gets pretty chilly where I'm at.
Thanks again for the help
I live in New Hampshire I understand
My girlfriend can’t go out in the cold she is about 100lbs fully clothed and dumped in a river
Did you see Cl3ver’s assassin cloak vid that’s the same style of cloak as this one I shared
Yeah I didn't think about his video. Good idea.
Glad I could help
Also check out Iodo on YouTube. Has a no fuss cloak vid and a make your own cloak vid.
I can recommend you a place to get a good one made if you decide to go that route.........I have one I got from these folks and HIGHLY recommend them. well worth the money in quality: https://www.etsy.com/listing/977442252/medieval-cloak-viking-cloak-mens-woolen?ref=yr_purchases

I've gotten several things from them and every time it has been good quality and fit well
if you give them the right measurements they ask for they will make it to those measurements
If you want something really easy to make you could go with a ruana cloke it is probably the easiest possible cloke you could make I made mine by getting a 1.5 meters of wool and cutting one slit half way down it and it works amazingly
Living anachronism also has a video on it which is where I got the idea https://youtu.be/ZfaPo-zFZz8?si=mYLuiJJt8NHkKpXM
There are tons of cloak designs. But which which one would be best for a Medieval Adventurer? And which famous fantasy character wears it?
All of these cloaks look good and have ardent supporters, this is not meant to say that your choice is wrong, or that all other cloaks than my top pick are bad. This is just my opinion based on the criteria...
He talks about the ruana cloke at 15 minutes in but the hole video is probably useful for you
made one myself that way as well From a decent 100% wool blanket bought for about $25.00 on Amazon
The above video was also my inspiration for the Ruana cloak I made as well
Yah I really like it and I find I actually use it more often than the more complex clokes I have made
Does it make sense to make a Ruana cloak with a hood?
Also what's a good fabric to line a wool Ruana?
You could totally put a hood on it wouldn't be to hard
Something that I've done in the past to make the hood for things is just take a sweater that has a nice hood and trace the shape of the panels out onto your fabric that way you don't need a pattern
GG @velvet idol, you just advanced to level 1!
As for lining I personally didn't line mine at all and works just fine but if I were to line it I would probably use linen or mabe cotton because I like to use the more historical materials but you could really use whatever you like half the fun of making your own stuff is you can experiment and find out what you like
That is a personal choice.............personally I prefer a seperate hood. something like this (pic purely used as an example):
The extra weight of a hood pulls on the rest of the cloak in wierd ways that you may not like. with a seperate hood you can remove it when it is not needed
agreed I did not line mine either. again a personal choice I'd say linen or cotton......have heard of folks using a light flannel too. If you are concerned about historical accuracy then Flannel and cotton would not be accurate (personally I don't fret over such things but some do)
I would add, on the separate cloak thing, also the idea that you could also wear such a hood without the cloak if you wanted at times when the cloak might perhaps be too much per the situation.
If I was going to make a full circle cloak out faux fur what starting measurements should I order in?
How tall is the person who will be in the cloak?
Is the cloak a knee length or mid calf length cloak
So from hair line on the back of the head to the desired spot knee or mid calf will give you an accurate measurement of radius
200x160 giving you extra material to make a hood
160 cm is 53.6 inches
More than plenty to make a full circle cloak
